So, Australia will soon have a new Prime Minister (it's not official until the Governor General signs off on it). Come the election I think it's likely we'll have another one again.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

What? Kevin Rudd again? Oh my goodness... do most Aussies like him more than Ms. Gillard?

If I were an Australian voter, I doubt this would give me more confidence in Labour. On the contrary, I would probably see this more as a desperate try to do better in the polls. Shouldn't they cast their arrows at Tony Abbott instead?

Okay, guys, a favor I have to ask for tidyness' sake. If you are going to quote a post, please:

Multi-quote powers activate!

I feel like the conversations from the previous page are wiped clean and we will start with a new slate right here.

They generally are when we start a new page. I had nothing to add to the previous conversation anyway.

It's official.

Why does this keep happening? I swear the government is controlled by the media, who has been excarberating the situation for the last month.

Because reasons. Those reasons being that no-one remembers what Kevin Rudd was like to work with last time he had power, and the opinion polls say more people would vote for Labor if he was running it.

That's what the opinion polls would have us believe.

They should indeed, but Labor can never seem to keep their act together.

I always find it interesting when someone is a fan of a team from an area they've never lived in. Usually that doesn't happen, it tends to require some special dissatisfaction with the local team.

To me it is a unique situation how I came about to be a die hard Braves fan.

First off I'm older then the Marlins (1993) and the Rays (1998) so there isn't much history there.

Second, the Braves games use to always be broadcasted on TBS superstation in the 90s/early 2000s, the time when I was most influenced by sports.

And 3, Bobby, Glavine, Smoltz, Maddux and Chipper played for the team my entire life,  and Chipper is from Florida

I may not live in Georgia, but I feel a connection to the team more then the ones in my backyard.

I remember when the Rockies and the Marlins were added. But I was barely old enough to be paying any attention to MLB, and I do believe I'm older than you, Larks, so no excuses. :P

If you don't mind me asking Astro, who will you put your vote for? Mine will probably go something like Greens and working down across the spectrum.

Depends on who's running, probably Greens as first preference as well, although I'll have to check what minor parties there are. The seat I'm in has gone Labor every year of its existence.

If 87 is indeed your birthdate, then yes, you are quite a bit older then me, Marlins are only a few months younger.

I was in Denver the day they announced the new teams. My dad has a paper with a little kid wearing a Rockies hat that was way too big for him. So, Larks, Ted Turner turned you too, huh? That weirdo tried to make the entire country Braves fans by broadcasting their games nationally. The only Braves I've ever been partial to are John Smoltz and Tom Glavine.

I have no input regarding Australian politics. I don't even speak to my friends in Australia anymore. Lost touch over the years.

I found out about the Rockies and the Marlins the same way I found out about the Diamondbacks and the devil Rays: Topps had cards with them in their set from that year.

Never really collected baseball cards. The only notorious thing I did was when the Phillies and the Mets were big rivals in 2007 (Phillies won division) my brother and I burned a Jose Reyes card.

Yeah, the Australian politics talk has me all "huh?" too.

Well I'll start on the federal level, the states follow a similar pattern.

It's divided into two chambers, the House Of Representatives and the Senate, the former is where all the fuss is.

Australia is divided into 150 electorates, each containing roughly 90,000 people. Each electorate has a single seat in the house, of which we elect a representative. Most of these representatives are partisan for one of the two main parties, but there are currently a few members of other parties/independents.

Basically if a party wins 76 seats, they become the ruling government. However as of the 2010 election, there were 72 of each, and 6 independents/Greens. Since neither party could form an absolute majority, they had to get the independents to "support" them by guaranteeing they would pass their bills. Hence we now have a hung parliament with 76-74 majority.

Would you (or someone else) mind explaining how the Australian electoral system works? I have never quite understood it.

ROFLyoshi's explained how the houses of parliament work, I'll explain the voting system. We use instant runoff preferential voting.

You get a ballot, on which is a list of candidates arranged by party. You write a "1" next to the candidate you like most, a "2" next to the candidate you like second-most, and so on and so forth through all the candidates. This is the preferential voting part - you vote in order of preference.

Counting the votes goes like this: the ballots are sorted by first preference (the "1" vote). Whoever got the least "1" votes is eliminated. You take this pile and look at who was the "2" preference on these ballots, and give the ballots to those candidates. Whoever has the smallest number of votes in this phase is eliminated, and their ballots distributed to whoever has the next preference, repeat until one candidate has a majority of the votes. This is the instant runoff part - instead of eliminating one candidate and holding a runoff election, we take care of that in the one election.

Yeah, the Australian politics talk has me all "huh?" too.

Now you know how we feel when there's US talk. :P

(WARNING: Very strong OPINION is shown below. Do NOT take offense.)

I'll just enter here. I don't like anyone in politics really. They're all idiots. If it was up to me I would make Bob Katter PM just to see what he would do. Kevin "07" Rudd is a megalomaniac and Julia is just not popular.  I personally think the whole idea of democracy is stupid. Not saying that Communism is better but we haven't invented a working form of government in 30,000 years! The problem with democracy is that you end up with idiots voting for Tony Abbot.

The problem actually is, that there are a hell of a lot of people like Larks who think the exact same thing about us, that voting for Labor is stupid and against our best interests. It's just the way things are. Some of Abbott's policies appeal to some.

And ultimately, that's democracy. You have to accept what you perceive as bad with the good. The "you're allowed to have your own opinion, but only if it conforms to mine" never works.
