playing this game, I just cant help wondering, what the hell was the dev team of sc2013 doing if 1 person can create this game in 3 years

They were thinking profit & quick turn over, whereas Shining Rock were looking to offer quality & originality.

I hope EA and the crew of Maxis sees this.

EA just has there priorities elsewhere, if one man made what looks like a fantastic and has complex game mechanics, I don't think EA knows what they are doing with SimCty anymore, they need to get there priorities straight and make a SimCity game that has mass appeal to the already massive group of fans, and maybe even lure more people into the series. I am definitely going to get Banished it seems quite enjoyable and impressive as it it.

I started my 3rd village and I'm trying to get my traveling conditions to be in harmony with food management. So far I built a gatherer hut and a fishing dock. I didn't bother to build a barn yet because the cart is fluctuating between 24 and 60% full. I only have about 13 souls in this first winter. So far the food distribution is good. But I'm starting to worry about the walking distance to harvest wood. I have a forester hut built too but those new trees will take some time to grow. I want the forester to concentrate on planting only because I don't want the trees around the gatherer hut to get cut down as it is within the forester's radius. I built roads to speed up travel times. I must admit I still have SC4 habits because I think about traveling at the beginning thus the early road networks..

I was surprised how impressive the visuals are, reminds me a lot of Age of empires but on survival mode instead.

Would be really cool if survival journals stared to pop up on here, there is a lot of story that could be done with them!

Yeah. The great thing is the stories can reflect real events in the villager's lives. Like the life of the wood cutter and how he worked his @rss off to get everyone warm in the winter. Or following someone from birth to death and telling their story. There's a lot of drama here.

That is a bonus! I had enough to buy one sheep. Even though I moved it to a nice pasture it died before I was able to buy a mate. (probably died of a broken lonely heart huh?) So I went into chicken farming...Need any eggs?

They obviously hired the services of a prize bull! Not an unrealistic scenario.

lol....the cow was already bred when you purchased it. ;) I often buy Heifers and Cows that are already bred on the cattle auction, the once to become a calf is a Bonus.

Banished is a nice game at start but after a while it becomes really boring, there are no goals and increasing population becomes really easy when you will control a lot of resources,There is a lot of potential but the creator was only one, with no any kind of help.

The game will need a serious modding, there are no enough things to do, More building and professions are needed, if mods will add chains like milk-cheese-etc it will become for sure a nice city builder game.

Here a video of a town that i built,  after 37 years of game.

Be prepared to loose citizens, is part of the game, my hints are: firewoods and food are primary, don't do fishermans, they are just a luxury for late game, gatherers and hunters are the first choice, growing crops is for middle game.
More houses = more childrens, so calculate well your growing line.

@Bergrar What speed do you play at? Have you gotten all the achievements? There's someone over at the SR forums who built up a huge city. http://shiningrocksoftware.com/forum/discussion/1780/203-nomads-yes-please-1500-citizens#Item_21

I play at x1 speed and do not find it boring at all. Eventually I will figure out for myself how to master the resources and then I will be in SC4 mode focusing on aesthetics. Map types seem endless with the seed options.

My approach is to take my time and enjoy, not looking for an end game. But I'm really looking forward to the mod kit. There are already members preparing concepts. http://www.banishedmods.com/forums/

I'm thoroughly enjoying this game. Finally got a hand on the mechanics and my towns are stable and sustainable. All that's left now is to grow. I do however really wish that even the biggest map size were bigger.

It's a good game, but it becomes too boring once you reach a high population.  At that point, it becomes too easy to get resources and there is no incentive in expanding.

I'm sort of amazed how people get bored so easily with this little jewel of a game... there are 999.999.999 possible seeds - surely you will find one that is challenging enough ;-)

That's what I do at least - I look for terrain that is almost impossible to work with, and take it from there... Other times I just go for some lovely scenery... I think I played for two or three weeks straight now, and I did not get bored for a minute (not even after I licked the starting pains and can now grow any type of village almost at will)...

You can see one of my 500+ towns here... :-)

I'm wondering if that is something that can be fixed with DLC.

No DLC......we are waiting for the mod kit. Once that's released, this game is going to have plenty more stuff. But for now, why not set your own goals and challenges? The map seeds are countless.

I quit playing for almost a week thinking the game was out of balance since everyone kept freezing and starving. Also couldn't see any future challenge. After reading some of the tips and experiences of others I started a new town and now have 215 citizens. Health at 4.5 hearts and happiness at 5 stars. Even got the "Smiles all around" and "Healthy" achievements for those which I had not even considered.

I believe the key to success and enjoyment of this game is to go SLOW. In the beginning there are just too many things that CAN and DO go wrong when one fast forwards. Later on after you have a stable population, food and firewood reserves then there are brief times it may be alright to speed up. Even though I plan to take this current town much further I am already formulating the layout and tactics for future settlements. Even without the mod kit Mr_Maison mentioned there is much to keep one playing in this game if you slow down and smell the evergreens and plowed earth.

Every time I think of one person doing the code and another doing the artwork I am amazed all over and even more determined to support such efforts and results. Banished is a great game and I have already played it countless hours more than I ever did Societies and several other nameless overpriced DRM laden insults. I understand Banished will never be to the liking of everyone but if you can see your way clear try and support and encourage the author because who knows, tomorrow they may make the game you love. ;)

Well, it is like SC4 in that regard.  It is not a game for the Gen X,Y,Z who want instant gratification.  Slow and steady works for both of these.

Yeah I totally agree with taking it slow. I find myself at X1 speed and have no desire to fast forward out of the fear of missing something. Besides, I love watching the peeps go about their business in real time and keeping an eye on the supplies, who died, who became laborer etc.

I'm playing on hard trying to get some seeds for orchards and livestock. The challenge for me is to rape the land and keep enough supplies for the local's usage. Seeds cost a whole lot of whatever you can put into the trading post.

Even in banishment, some do better than others...

As the nouveau-riche brewer's wife puts it (with plenty rolling eyes):

"See, we work hard for all this - I don't like the cramped downtown! I do want a clean uncluttered market nearby. Efficiency? Sheesh! If it takes three Foresters to keep up the grounds and our private orchards, so be it. The fresh fruit and veggies our hired Gatherers bring in daily have no match! How can people live without a Herbalist right next door? Would you put your kids in school with those flea-ridden Trade Post urchins? The Hunting Lodge? Well, what do you do on weekends? And yes, naturally we NEED a private marina for our boats!"

I purchased the game yesterday.  It's very challenging and very addicting.  It's like combining Age of Empires with SimCity.  There is no war\military aspect to it, it's all about city design, resource management, and survival.  I can see the game getting boring after a few weeks of hardcore playing, but it's only $20 on Steam right now.  I feel I'm already going to get my money's worth out of it.

The best part is that it's made by a single indie gamer, and the game download is only 100MB, and you'd never guess it when playing it!

Saw some videos on YouTube concerning this game, and now I'm interested :) I'll be looking to get the game when money comes around.

The game is fun indeed, but you reach a certain point where you are unlikely to fail and it feels like you can press to +10 speed and let it run for ever without running out of resources.

Here I am 3+ weeks later and I'm still playing Banished hardcore.  I still feel I'll tire of it after a month or two.  I keep doing things differently like doing the harder start setting, or going for making folks super-happy, using a small map and trying to maximize the space, etc...

I haven't tried the mountainous mode yet, I'm saving that for toward the end.

This game has really caught my attention. I've been wandering lately about this... Great gameplay and graphics.

But I wish I could build a metropolis. Is that even possible?
