it's a bit like sc4 in that you can speed up or slow it down

It's not quite what I'm asking about. *;)

It's not the play speed that I mean but the default length of in-game month. In other words, a constant which does not affect the speed of the units but only the speed of in-game time flow.

This constant is then sped up or slowed down by the simulator's front-end speed buttons. In Tropico it was controlled by a code similar to the one below, but I'm sure it works just the same in all other games (the programming language being the only difference):

const.Lengthofday = 1500
const.Lengthofmonth = 30 * Lengthofday
const.Legthofyear = 12 * Lengthofmonth

Well? *;)

The "SimCity 4" vanilla Opera House is the most evil thing in existence. Avoid.

To be honest its not something I've ever worried about in Banished as it doesn't have a day/night mod, my priority has been is it spring, summer or autumn as that will determine how much food I'm going to have going into winter and of course the other priority is having enough firewood to stop people freezing to death , winter tends to be fairly obvious

Linntown04.jpg.1891a2d2105b6408decfb26d2491acd6.jpg

I had to go back to a couple of mods done for the 1.0.6 version of the game (that's sort of like the equivalent of SC3) and kid1293 did a mod called Proper Time and in the description he's included some of the changes he made and that

For a mod to make the game go in real-time
you have to change the value -
   float _agePerSecond = 0.000277777;
to -
   float _agePerSecond = 0.0000555554;

He then goes on to say

Spoiler

The numbers in the first part should be multiplied by 5
to get the years value -
   float _adultAge = 2.0;   (10 years)
   float _marriageAge = 2.0;  (10 years)
   float _marrigeRange = 4.0; (20 years)
   (together with last value gives max marriage age = 30 years)
   float _childMinAge = 2.2; (11 years)
   float _childMaxAge = 8.0; (40 years)

   float _maxAge = 15.0; (75 years)
   float _maxAgeTolerance = 3.0; (plus/minus 15 years)

I changed these to -
   float _adultAge = 2.0; (10 years)
   float _marriageAge = 3.0; (15 years - approx. at school end, see later)
   float _marrigeRange = 3.0; ( 15 years)
   float _marrigeRange = 6.0; ( 30 years)
   (together with last value gives max marriage age = 45 years)
   float _childMinAge = 3.0; (15 years)
   float _childMaxAge = 9.0; (45 years)
   float _childMaxAge = 10.0; (50 years)

   float _maxAge = 15.0; (same)
   float _maxAgeTolerance = 3.0; (same)

---

I know that in these values, 300 equals a month -
   float _childTerm = 900.0;
   float _postChildTerm = 1800.0;
   float _postChildTermTol = 5400.0;
So in original game they were pregnant only 3 months.
Then 6 months pause before getting pregnant again.
It could be delayed another 18 months (3rd value),
but usually they go for it.

I changed to -
   float _childTerm = 2700.0;
   float _postChildTerm = 2700.0;
   float _postChildTermTol = 5400.0;
9 months pregnant - 9 months pause - plus up to 18 months.
In game it was about 2 years difference between the children.
Rather fast, but possible to control by refusing to build
new homes for the grown-up children.

---

Schooltime is even worse. It has (what I can see) absolutely
no mathematical or calendar connection.
These are original values -
   int _requiredEducation = 400;
   float _educationTimeLength = 3.0;
   float _educationWorkLength = 10.0;
It gave little over one year in school.
These values seem to be proportional and not connected to
how fast the game runs.

I changed to -
   int _requiredEducation = 1400;   (about 3 1/2 time more)
   float _educationTimeLength = 10.5;   (about 3 1/2 longer)
   float _educationWorkLength = 10.0;
And got about 4.5 - 5.2 years in school.
These values will make some older students move out and marry
at 15 while still being a student.

It's possible to make quite a few changes to the game settings using this menu

MrAbrahms created a Climate Extremes Mod thru it was also built for v1.0.6 so not sure it would work in v1.0.7 and that creates these weather conditions

Spoiler

BC2040: A projection of the local (Vancouver Island, British Columbia) climate in about 20 years, based on current trends. Mild wet winter (flooding season) and short dry summer (fire season).
Can't Rain All The Time...Can It?: Yes. Yes it can. Mild temperatures year-round.
Will This Winter Never End?: Temperatures hover around freezing year-round. Near constant precipitation.
Nuclear Winter (Gonna Freeze Your Brain): Temperatures range from -18 to -50C. Near constant precipitation.
Extremes: No precipitation from early summer to late fall. Temperatures range from -32 to +53C (based on actual record temperatures from the same country (Iran I think)).
Desert Extreme: It rains sometimes, but not every year. Temperatures range from about 20-50C.
Comfort Zone: 2-3 months of rain, temperature ranging from about 0-25C.
Mini Ice Age: Temperature ranges from about +5 to -5C. Frequent precipitation year-round.
Sweltering With The Heat Of, uh, Hot Stuff: Dry summer, low precipitation the rest of the year. Temperatures range from about 20-55C.
Warm And Wet: Temperatures range from 24-30C. Near constant precipitation.
Sauna: Temperatures range from about 30-45C. Near constant precipitation.
Extremely Mild: Temperatures range from 21-23C. Low chance of precipitation year-round. Very little weather variation.
Extremely Wild: Temperatures range from about 0-60C. Extremely unstable weather. Increased tornado chance.
Too Hot: Temperatures range from 37-43C. Wet winter, variable spring, summer, and fall.
Too Cold: Temperatures range from -57 to -35C. Variable weather.
Just Right: Temperatures range from 14-30C. Wet winter, dry summer.
Tornado Alley: Averages about 1.5 tornadoes per year. Wet spring and fall, extremely dry the rest of the year. Temperatures range from about 25-45C. Extreme weather variability. I know this one's not really accurate, I was primarily concerned with just getting a high frequency of tornadoes, and didn't actually do any research with respect to general weather patterns in the midwest.

Precisely! This is exactly what I mean! :ohyes:

Ohhh, I guess I could have bought this game then... If I knew we have a sub-forum for Banished and that the time flow can be adjusted, I would probably be playing it now!

The time flow issue is the single most annoying thing that I come across in games. SimCity is an exception as it doesn't play such a huge role except for the monthly income.

However, in Tropico 4: Modern Times it was really killing the game. The idea was that you are running the island as usual but there are various world events that give you certain opportunities or woes like the dissolution of the soviet union or Vietnam War.

However, with the in-game time wheezing by like a cheetah on steroids one simply could not get enough time to actually get in the mood of the given historical period. All of the fun was lost just as you were only starting to get the jist of what was happening in the given time frame.

This is why having such a variable in a season-themed game like Banished would be a very valuable asset. Perhaps even increasing the anxiety if you manage to get everything on time. Or to the contrary - making the game a little bit relaxed by giving you more time to gather resources.

Of course, first of all I'd have to actually try the game to determine how fast or slow the seasons come and go. :)

This is someone else's estimation of how long it takes but it sounds about right

"At normal speed, a year in game will pass in about an hour. At the fastest speed, time will pass ten times more quickly"

Also while the game doesn't have a day/night mode that never stopped Paeng

Note the fires are real

Getting even closer to the shore! :ohyes:

This is what I wanted to know and what my first question is when dealing with, shall I say, "Tropico-grade" games.

This gives us roughly 4.5 minute long month (Or "lunar cycle", "hit-the-gong-with-your-head", "30 day period", you name it. Assuming that a year lasts, give or take, 56 minutes) which is actually quite a good length. I might still find it too short actually, but it's a good start. *:lol:

Aaaaand, Banished is again on GOG sale! *:thumb:

With that on the table, would you @catty-cb recommend buying it? Or rather wait for Banished 2 to be released?

P.S.: 1574617397_155662 that if I choose to buy it, I will plant a locator bug on you and pick your mind about the game's aspects, mechanics and strategies... There'll be lots of questions for you to answer. *:thumb:

Definitely recommend it, as Luke is the only one working on Banished2 and it took him years to create Banished1, it could be several more years before he rolls out the first beta version.

Those are in-game pictures done by Paeng in Banished1 as Banished2 is still very much a work-in-progress thru he would have had to tweak them for it to look like it was dusk or at night as the game doesn't have a nightmode and was also using quite a bit of custom content, he was also a master at the game so my in-game shots doesn't even come close.

This is the latest picture I've taken in-game using the zoomhack, and that was quite some time ago

Screenshot2.jpg.07aab69941b6afd71f416ecb01963c54.jpg

I don't think Paeng would have minded me posting a few more of his in-game pictures, this one is called "rapids"

One more called Circles

There is gigabytes of custom content available to download from the various banished websites, plus if you have the game from steam it connects to the downloads area.

One website is called Banisher Ventures and is concentrating on a recreating a Viking world

https://www.banishedventures.com/north/

Another site thru they have had a couple of name changes put out a giant mod called "Colonial Charter" which was very early American, they also were responsible for MegaMod which is about 3gb in size and has everything in it, thru my computer can't cope with it.

Or falling asleep slumped over your keyboard as you have set your villagers to making bricks for the new port you are building on a new map and its taken them so long .............

smiley-lazy.gif.8df010ddeedf7960a8b8823a4961184b.gif

Anyway this is what they built with the bricks

Here's part of the new port

Screenshot2.jpg.d140c828d75bd09a096ce9a929e4e5ea.jpg

for some reason know only to themselves they completed the top floors which are houses before starting on the ground floors which are going to be shops

Screenshot1.jpg.6f4caeae7018587c04e9263c63df72e2.jpg

This building is the new town Inn and they have built both floors on it ... as you can see from the menu I did have the option of adding a third floor but given how long its taking them to make the bricks I stuck with just two floors

there are some banished aging mods, including this "One year is one year" https://banishedinfo.com/mods/view/27-one-year-is-one-year-Update-26-17091434

and a couple mods by tom sawyer of The North fame that include 'One year is one year' aging as part of a total citizen overhaul that also has things like

"Citizen Properties:

– Aging in real time (one year is one year)
– Student or worker with 12 years
– Marriages with 15+
– Childbearing from 16 to 45 years
– Max age about 60 – 90 years
– Capacity of workers: +10%
– Cold resistance: +20%
– Better warm coats (+20%)
– Demanding (requiring alcohol and town services for full happiness)"

 these 2 (ironman and norseman) can be found at https://www.banishedventures.com/mods/

if all you want to do is run the game at 100x speed instead of 10x, there is no mod that i know of, but there is a cheat engine strategy that still works AFAIK, described here:
