Is anybody else getting this mesage when you try to access the SC4Devotion site or LEX?

"Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to the site owner reaching his/her bandwidth limit. Please try again later."

When you try to access the SC4Devotion site or LEX?

I cannot get in and am just curious as to whether I am the only one or if it is widespread.  Thanks much!

Edit:  Where there is a will there is a way, by logging into the forum and using the link on the left side of the page I guess I was able to bypass this message.  Sorry for bothering.

I get this message as well. Got it a few days ago, but they seemed to work again normally for another few days. Now they're gone again.

I can't even access their forum. Is there a workaround?

it is probably EA ddosing simtropolis and sc4devotion so that all the people they gave sc4 to for free will not be able to see how much of a better game it is than "SIMTOWN2013®© " (joke)

Nope, that just conspiracy gibberish, it's most definitely not that.

There is probably another cause for it, and probably we brought that upon ourselves: the 200+ MB download of the NAM 31 and people download this enourmous package. It's eating up all the bandwidth and now it has run out, unfortunately. Quite some sites have limited bandwidths, and if they exceed them, you get the 509 error...

Best,

Maarten

Yes, it is still there.  I guess they only buy so much bandwidth per month and this has overflowed.  Not only due to NAM V31, but all the bad behaved web crawlers like Bing that hit site like this hard (including us).  Not only eating the bandwidth but the server processors as well.

Actually this is the second it has happened this month. There was huge hype surrounding the new NAM and plenty of downloads from the LEX.

Luckily, we managed to get it on the STEX as well, but I think the Dirktator, Riiga and myself pulled a few of our hairs out trying to get the 200MB+ file onto the STEX with it's 25MB limit. :P

I see it too and it is very embarassing...

I don't see what's embarassing about it--we're on a pretty heavy-duty dedicated server package for hosting (not cheap--about $200/month), and it takes quite a bit for the site to 509, so I take it as a sign that people are wanting to use the site, because of the new NAM and the release of the new SimCity has rekindled interest in good ol' SC4.  I believe jeronij upped the bandwidth temporarily with our host after the first outage, but we still hit that with a couple weeks left in the month.  That hasn't happened since the early days of the site some 6 years ago, when the LEX had just opened, and we were on a tiny hosting package.

That said, I don't know when the site will be back up.  I suspect jeronij is quietly working things out behind the scenes--he usually doesn't emerge with news until he's already gotten things fixed.

Well however long it takes your continued effort to run your project is appreciated. I am eager to try out nam 31.1 when it is available.

Can't wait for it to go back up, so I can cure all the brown boxes I got right now for lots and stuff.

And yes, NAM 31 is supercool!

It really costs you that much to run SC4D?

Knowing what is going on is far cry better than being stuck in the dark.  Thanks for the heads up on this.  I will just be patient and allow things to run their course.  It is the least I can do in appreciation of these people that are paying the bills.  I will attempt to syphon some money off to donate here in the extremely near future to help the cause.

Seems the website has lot of limiations and not doing it very well, most likely poor management with the bandwidth issues. They should had put some filters to manage the traffic flow like block all search engines and that way the bing, etc like the nanny moose said above. It's sad to see this. It needs to be fixed to not be happening again. Just my 2 cents

Yes, it does.  It's a little bit less (but not much less) than that normally--I don't know how much the extra bandwidth cost, as I don't really deal with the finances.  Running a big file exchange for a popular game requires a lot of throughput and bandwidth.  I'd hazard a guess that ST's monthly bill would dwarf that.

The site going down for bandwidth issues aren't a particularly common occurrence, and all sites have limitations.  All the major SC4 fansites (ST, too) are getting a heavy crunch of traffic because of things like the new NAM and the new SimCity.  There's special circumstances involved.

Does anyone happen to know when the month resets and the bandwidth will reset?  Is it the end of the calendar month?  I know that no one may know this, but I thought I'd ask.  Maybe the billing cycle ends in the next day or so and it will be back.

From past experience, it's a calendar month basis.  NAM 31 is just huge - over nine times the size of NAM 30.  (NAM 31.1 will be somewhat smaller.)  I think the site did quite well holding out as long as it did; this was an unprecedented release.  And you can rest assured that people are doing everything they can to get the site back online as soon as possible.

I managed to get the new NAM before SC4devotion went down, and all I can say is wow.  I'm really loving the new puzzle pieces.  I reinstalled SimCity4 after a really long hiatus and this is one of the first updates I downloaded for the game. It's ironic, but the fiasco surrounding the new SimCity actually got me fired up again.  SC4 will always be one of my all-time favorite games, and so I just want to say "thank you" to the modding community for keeping this game alive.  You guys are the best.

With my own site the bandwidth is reset on the first of the month, I'm assuming that's fairly standard practice with hosting companies

Well Maarten beat me to it.

I just want to really stress right now that Simtropolis is NOT BEING ENDORSED BY EA. We are completely independent and are simply a fan-run community for all city building games. Tensions may be running high to what may be seen as a failure of a game, but please do not take it out on Simtropolis.

Site outages both on Simtropolis and SC4D can be common at times... we did not shut them down to make people play SC2013. That's just silly.
