Just for the sake of interest, a recent list of games EA have shuttered.

I got bored last night trying to log into the game and failing, and in between watching Haljackey's livestream gameplay, I just did some idle searching just out of curiosity... Thought you might be interested.

The question remains - how popular or successful must a game be for EA to consider it viable enough to maintain servers running for it?

"But as games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles -- where it’s no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running."

It's not surprising - a great deal of resources are required to maintain all the server infrastructure for all of these games. It's disappointing however that the movement as of the past few years when it comes to games has been to externalize as much as possible on the cloud to combat piracy, cheating, whatever, etc...certainly many of these games relied on their online interactions and are, as said above, completely dead to those who purchased them.

"the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level -- fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles"

Exactly.  Madden 11 was retired after Madden 13 was released, because pretty much everyone who had 11 then bought either 12 or 13.  There's just no need to keep old versions going long after everyone's transitioned to the next generation (or the one after that, for people who skip a year).  Likewise, Sims 2's online component was just shut down a month ago, long after Sims 3 came out, because there was really no one still playing it online, and that's for a game over TWELVE years old.  (Yes, Sims 2 is older than SimCity 4 by several years.)

SimCity isn't like that, because they're not going to release SimCity2014 next year, and SimCity2015 the year after that; they'll just add more DLCs or expansions for as long as they can.  Based on past SimCity games, it'll be 5+ years before we get the next game in the series, and if the Sims 2's track record is any indication, it'd be a decade before they shut down the servers for this game.

Also, most of those games have offline and/or hotseat play, so losing their online components didn't completely cripple them.  This game would be useless without the server (unless they add the ability to save locally down the road), so they'll have even more reason not to shut it off.

I hope they add Simcity('13) to this list soon. They can't even get their servers working in the first place -and that's with tiny maps.

I, for one, am now sick of EA churning out half completed games and then making us pay premium for updates that should have been fixed before release. When trying a new game engine, then fair enough it's necessary because there's no point tweaking it to perfection and then roll it out to find it just isn't compatible.

WHAT? SC4 was in January of 2003, The Sims 2 was in September of 2004.

It's odd to find Sims 2 on that list as Sims 2 didn't really have a online component. It merely had a site that sold some items IIRC and that was pretty much it.

Sims 2 community did not just go away though, people that are upset with changes about Sims 3 still play sims 2 just like SC4 players. That's just how it is though.

Right, my mistake, got the years for Sims (2000) and Sims 2 (2004) crossed.  Regardless, Sims 2 was kept on their servers for 9 years, and was on there well after Sims 3 was released.  So again, if SimCity follows that trend, it'll be a decade before they shut it down.

I also wonder how many of those games were online only.  Because if I couldn't play the game after EA decided to turn off the server support, I'd be really p.o'd.  Does that mean I actually have to read the entire EULA for this game?

Anyone read it?  Is there a clause that gives EA the option to back out leaving the user with no options?

Basically, any EA game without a micro-transaction component (like Sims 3, SC'13, etc) is in danger of vaporizing within a couple years when sales dry up enough. I can't wait to see how they do MTs in SC. The Sims 3 stuff is just crazy.

Just an example here...I still have Unreal Tournament Gold Edition from 1999. I can still install it and play single player or invite friends and have a LAN party. It would be sad that a title's usability is dependent on it's popularity. Just because a certain number of players do not play it anymore don't mean someone who payed their hard earned cash should be banned from playing it.

This is the first always-online EA game I've bought since 2002... And that game (Earth and Beyond) was developed by Westwood before they got bought.

EA shut down the game's servers in 2004.

So you can add that one to the list. Hope you enjoyed my stream... Couldn't cast it now even if I wanted to... Can't log in :P

I hope Darkspore is not going to get shut down soon, because I have this game and I'm looking forward to playing it in the future. It's online only and very unpopular  :lost:

The whole idea of Spore is very saddening. So much potential and it was the last game that Will Wright really worked on supposedly. It's a shame that it wasn't the great game it should have been,

BF1942 still has a large amount of official ea servers. Just because these games that nobody plays anymore get shut down doesn't mean they're going to shut down simcity 5 in in 5 years.

Before the end of this year, SimCity 2013 will stand on that list. And then they just all ripped us off, were not having a offline mode and we can't get our money back. I'm sure that this will happen.

I hate it that EVERYTHING has to be social/online nowadays. It's ruining the world. Some things aren't ment to be online, this game is 1 for example. #FAILURE

Darkspore is a different game. It's an action RPG like Torchlight or Diablo. It has this creature creator borrowed from Spore though. Instead of items you get in those games, you get body parts in Darkspore that, when attached to your hero, give various bonuses. A really cool game, but it's a shame it's online only and might get shut down, because it wasn't as popular as other games of its genre.

Agreed.  What's with the knee-jerk reaction to online games?  Even if 99% of your gameplay is offline for a game like this, that last 1% still adds to the game experience.  In SimCity, we get multiplayer (which we'll ignore, since we're talking about a single-player experience), cloud saves (which I don't like, but which everything's trending towards), DRM (which we hate but EA obviously wants), achievements (don't care), and the global market.  Would you rather go back to the old days, when economic systems were horribly abused because values were only updated in monthly patches, and GameFAQs would have guides saying to produce exactly X of these, and Y of those, and Z of that other thing for maximum profits?  Connection issues are obviously a problem, and no one's denying that.  But as much as this week's server issues have sucked, you can't think they're going to be typical of the rest of the game's lifespan; many, many MMO games (and yes, this is an MMO) had server problems at launch, but all got better quickly.  So personally, I'd say the online bit will still be a net gain, as long as you're not paranoid about Big Brother monitoring your gameplay.

Now, I'd have liked to see an option for a less active online presence.  Something like a once-per-session DRM check and price update, with the savegames stored locally and no achievements/leaderboards/multiplayer allowed in that mode.  But, how much extra work would it have taken for them to have two parallel systems, instead of just the one?  (Probably more than they could afford, given their other time pressures.)

It's sad that we can't look back on this game 20 years later and decide to just install and play it like we can with the old Sim City games.

I had thought about buying Madden 12, but knowing this, I doubt I'll do it unless I can find it in the bargain bin.  Now, online play isn't the main reason I buy games (SC4 vs. SC2013 is a case in point), but principle counts, too.  This trend of forcing people to buy the newest game seems like a money grab to me.

The majority of suspended online services are from franchise games -- where a newer version is released annually. Essentially, it's a constant release cycle, where each game will eventually be superseded. From my experience, although it can vary, this process usually takes about two years on average. It's worth noting that most of these do feature a dedicated offline mode, where an Origin account isn't required to play single player.

As said on the page, for the service to be suspended, a game must contribute less than 1% of the total online share. Basically, this is a base level to determine whether it's profitable to continue. No profit would be generated from supporting an outdated game.

In this regard, SimCity could become a similar type of franchise to The Sims -- where DLC and expansion packs have been released, to prolong the game's lifespan. If this is true, I'm sure EA will aim to support SimCity for as long as possible (assuming the server performance is improved).

That list represents a lot of creativity down the drain.

You would think with all of the work developers have put into all of those game, all the effort, they would not want to see them become obsolete.

If only they would offer an offline mode, at the end of a game's life on their servers.

Thank You for the Continued Support!

Simtropolis depends on donations to fund site maintenance costs.
Without your support, we just would not be in our 24th year online!  You really help make this a great community. *:thumb:

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

Make a Donation, Get a Gift!

STEX Collections

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
