these are adorable! Adorable I say! No probs they can fit in the European cities

Thank you :] ! Well I suppose those houses could fit in European settings due to it's similarities with traditional neoclassical architecture

just a note (aside from the looking great buildings  ;) )

HD render is best suited for small buildings/props, as it makes bigger files, which makes larger loading times. this kind of buildings are on the threshold I think of what is good idea to to HD or to SD. I know some details would be lost, but that's something we are used too in the game if we think about it  ;)

Beautiful! I agree about using SD... Most folks play in zoom 5 or less. HD looks great in render pics, but less so in-game. Just my two cents. :)

Well, I have a huge respect for you guys as I am big fan of both of you, but I could'nt disagree more. It's true that HD generates bigger files, but let's face it, 5 years old computers can handle simcity 4 with ease. Also, in my opinion, HD looks better in both zoom5 and zoom6

    novacidade20fev00136270.png

The lot on the left contains only HD props, the one on the right uses SD. While the difference is very subtle, for me the SD props are far too smooth, it's as someone tried to blur the image. The HD props, on the other side, seem to have it's details extruded and far more visible. I suppose I don't have to show a comparisson picture at zoom 6 right?

Sorry if I sounded arrogant, I'm willing to change at this matter, however, no one has conviced me so far. Thank you guys for the comments

EDIT: I decided to post a picture at zoom 6

Of course it is a matter of opinion, just like any work of art :)

I just happen to like the 'smooth' look at zoom 5 - the HD looks jagged, almost pixelated in fact.  But that is just my opinion - you should do what you like.

The HD/SD debate seems to come up frequently, so if you like HD better, then you should go with that.  I was just offering my opinion in case you hadn't thought about the SD option.

In any case, the modeling looks great - keep up the good work!

In a technical sense, zoom 5 using HD is worse because it uses zoom 6's images, just shrunk down, and SC4 doesn't handle image shrinking very well.  It doesn't do any antialiasing, it just drops pixels.  The reason it looks "clearer" is because the pixels that antialias the image are being dropped, so you're just getting two high contrast pixels next to each other without any blending in between.  But ultimately, regardless of whether something is technically better or not, it looks how it looks, and if you prefer one over the other that's fine.

But I think more importantly, there are BATing decisions that have to be made, and those decisions are based on the resolution that you're working at.  When we BAT we look at zoom 5s and zoom 4s, and we exaggerate certain features to make them look good at zoom 4 and 5.  If you're looking at hd zoom 6 renders, then you're making things look good for zoom 6, but it will look worse at zoom 5 and 4 because what you modeled might be too small or might not have enough contrast.  One example is windows.  We make window frames thicker than they are in real life so that they show up more clearly.  Another example are stripes.  If something has stripes and the stripes are too small, we reduce the number of stripes so that the individual stripes are thicker, so that they show up more clearly.

So if you're making these HD, do zoom 5, and the occasional zoom 4 preview renders to make sure what you're doing looks how you expect it to.  Zoom 4 and 5 are the most important zooms because that's what people look at the most often while playing the game.  :)

Thank you guys for the comments and for respecting my point of view, I feel alot more secure on my decision to render in HD :thumb: . After some work I finnished completely 6 little props for low-wealth residential use and I have already lotted them. They all sit in 1x1 lots, very simple lots by the way, they hold 12 sims and all other stats were made to fit sc4 original stuff. Here's a pic

Please tell me what do you think, if I get positive reviews I will release them soon. Thank you all!

(Kid voice) I want it ! I want it ! Excellent work!

A big thumbs up from me. Can't wait to get my hands on these.

Thank you very much guys :thumb: ! Unfortunatelly, you will have to wait just a little, but I promisse I will try to upload them soon

I like what you have there. However, I wouldn't release them yet as it is your first BAT (isn't it) and you can still add some variety. How about some bungalow roofs with some stuff!

Many thanks! Well, I agree with you, I won't rush on releasing this, I thinking about adding four more houses and a corner building, when those are finnished I will release this set

Obrigado DuFerraz, it's great to see another brazilian around here! I won't be making commercial versions for this, but soon enough I will make some few sobrados ( how do I call them in english?) in the same neoclassical style as those.

    I want them :O

and I ahve to second Jason on HD/SD debate thing ;)

If you want them, you got them :D ! Jason's comment was indeed wise ( I don't know if that is the appropriate term)

Nice! "Sobrado" in english is "two-story house".. If your building have ten floors, you can say "ten-story building".

I like the sound of a corner lot. Any chance of some diagonals? I don't know how much harder that would be, but I'm pretty sure SimCoug would give you a helping hand if you asked nicely:-)

Alright DuFerraz, thank you for the help :thumb:

one information, how big are they? 16 wide x Y deep and Z tall, what are the values of Z and Y? ^^

and yes, wise is the right word :P

Well, the smaller houses are all 8 meters wide and the large ones are 16 meters wide, all of them are about 10 to 12 meters tall and about 12 to 15 meters deep, you can see those are really tiny houses. Thank you for the comment

Soon I'll post the corner lot. Diagonals would be to much trouble for this kind of house as they are attached to the sidewalk and are wall to wall, so in order to make diagonals I would have to redo all those houses so far, however, I will soon do some dettached houses that would go well in diagonal. Thanks for the comment

I have been pretty lazy this past days so I made little progress, but here it is!

Just two more props to go! Please comment :D

I won't make a long comment either:  :thumb:

This is gorgeous and meticulous details :O I like that.

Keep up man, it's great so far

Thank you very much for the comment

Here's a picture of the most boring part of creating a set of residentials: corner lots!

    69139494.png

Not the best picture, but it's ok. Now, I need just one more prop, for the other corner, and this set will be finished. Thank you guys, once again, for the comments and the patience :thumb:

Sorry I haven't commented here before, but I love these types of buildings, even though everything I do involves commercial skyscrapers.  One thing though that pops out at me are the roofing materials.  You should try using a displacement map instead of a bump map.  With a displacement map the tiles of the far side of the roof won't appear flattened. Alternatively you could poly-mod the tiles out of the roof plane, which could end up looking even better, but as they are now, that flattened look really isn't working.  Good luck!

Thank you very much for the comment :thumb: . I will try to improve the roof, as it stands now it's pretty flat indeed.

Well guys, today I am going to make a somewhat relevant post: I am going to travel tomorrow and when I come back, at Monday, my vacations will be over. This means that I won't have as much free time as I wanted to keep BAtting as I currently study at a university form monday to friday and music takes up my weekend ( I'm a accordion player), so updates here will be much less frequent, unfortunatelly. Also, after some comments, I realized that I could really improve the roofing of my houses, so I decided to focus on this particular issue and with the great help from Carlos I'm guessing that I will make some improvemments :D  . Once again I thank you all for the comments, patience and understanding :thumb:.

I haven't visit your thread recently and I just look at your works so far, the only sentence comes out of my mouth is "Amazing job, your BATs are perfect". I hope you can upload those BATs to the STEX as well, we have some Latin Americans members and I bet most members will love them too.

I'm sorry if bumping this is wrong, but these are so sexy! Where is Maloskero with his release? And oh man, I'd love to know more about SketchUp/3dsMax and make some BATs for the Brazilian/Latin American community. I live in the Tijuca neighborhood in Rio and every day I drive through some awesome buildings and think about how great it would be to have them in my cities. I'd love to release some cool stuff, but obviously it's a lot of hard work to make stuff as impressive as this and I still have a whoooooole lot to learn.

Anyway, Maloskero, if you're still around, please make a release! Thanks for all your effort!

Sorry, but I have literally lost I my work on this project, and now I'm trying to restart it.

I will keep you guys posted
