Not that strange at all, really - there are a heck of a lot of asteroids out there, and we only really know where some of the big ones are. If this was small enough (it blew up in the atmosphere and didn't cause widespread damage, so it likely wasn't that big) then there was little to no chance of us spotting it.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

-Steen Eiler Rasmussen, 1898-1990 (SimCity 2000 User Manual).

News are talking about 500 injured (most of them with small cuts) in 6 different cities because of the blast the explosion produced.

Others are even saying the russian army destroyed it

That video looks extremely fake. Most notably due to the complete apathy of pretty much everyone on the street when it almost appears a nuclear bomb goes off right next to them. Not even a reaction from the pedestrians.

There's lots of videos of it all over the net, I doubt that they could all be fake.

The videos of the meteor are amazing and beautiful, almost wish it had blown over Finland. :P

Perhaps the reason why it wasn't spotted was because it might have come to earth on a free ride behind the 2012 DA 14?

Isn't is the first time a meteor has caused damage to humans over a large scale? (at least in modern times)

I think we need to start planning and starting an organisation to actually deal with asteroids, rather than just track them.

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

CBC report.

The Russian people seem to be more blasé, perhaps, than if this happened over, say, New York.  Life in the tough lane inures one to such unexpected things.  Probably everyone was wondering what Vlad the Usurper was up to.  I'm afraid to think what the reaction would have been over the U.S.  They'd probably have gone to Defcon 3.

@Terring: That's a nice meme.

Yeah there would be chaos is the streets if that happened over NYC or Chicago or LA. Then the conspiracy nuts would be blaming everything but a meteor!!!

Had it hit 20 or 30 years ago--a tiniest of fractions of the lifetime of the earth--it just may have been enough of a blast to trigger automated Soviet nuclear reprisal attacks against the U.S. before any site investigation team could stop them. Carl Sagan offered the grim view in "Cosmos" that an object from space could naturally strike Earth, as objects regularly do, and in response our species would commit scripted mass nuclear suicide. What difference a generation makes.

I had never heard the name "Henny Penny" before, either, but I do know the story by the name of "Chicken Little". According to Wikipedia the latter is how it is known in the US while the former is more common in other English-speaking countries.

"Chicken Licken" is apparently another name for the story, although had I thought that was just John Scieszka's spoof of it.

^ That one was certainly the huge one from yesterday.

But that meteor that fell on Russia..I've heard officials perfectly knew of it, but they thought it'd disintegrate mid-air and never reach the ground. They miscalculated something.

That, or they just thought it'd fall in an uninhabited area.

It did disintegrate mid-air. The loud boom and subsequent shockwave was the result of the meteor breaching the sound barrier and producing a sonic boom.

And no, I don't think they knew it was coming. It was a pretty small meteor, the kind you simply don't detect that easily. And all over the world there are only a handful of telescopes searching the skies for meteors, not nearly enough to cover every bit of sky all of the time. This meteor wasn't really an exception either. Meteors like this hit the earth on a regular basis. We don't notice most of them because most of them fall in the oceans or hit some uninhabited area.

Well, there is a new Canadian satellite which I think has been launched with the job of surveying for non-telescope visible NEOs.  Just got this program off the ground, so to speak.

Russian recovery efforts.

Lots of broken glass and the subsequent injuries, some physical damage to buildings from the shock wave.  Fortunately, no one seems to have been seriously injured.
