As a general rule, we do not delete accounts.  The times that we do are usually because maintenance is being performed.

Also, I'm moving this to ST Related.

Out of idle curiosity, is there a reason why you guys won't delete someone's account if they ask to have it deleted?  Or is simply due to a lack of ability?

Ohhh.  How weird.  I always wondered why admins shied away from deleting accounts.  I didn't realize it affected the site in such a way.  Thanks for the response.

Yes, this is understandable.  The data base is enormous, and each and every thread has to be inspected for the deletees stuff.  A general data base crawl is likely to kill the site for several hours.

So I imagine it's the same way with different message forums across the web, because it seems like every one I've ever participated in has stated they don't delete member accounts.  I used to think it was due to ego or simply an admin's personal unwillingness to take the steps necessary to do it.  Now I get it...and totally understand.  Interesting.

There's actually another reason most forums don't delete accounts, and that is for archive purposes.  I've seen forums full of deleted accounts.  The threads are awful, full of generic avatars and "deleted member" as the username.  Makes it difficult to follow a conversation because you can't tell who's saying what.

Yes, that is yet another one of the problems.  To delete someone without loss of continuity most certainly raises terrible problems if there is only one "deleted" symbol.  There would have to be a serial on deletes so that it because "deleted0001", "deleted0002", etc.

I'm not sure I care about your "reasons". Privacy laws dictate that you must provide a way for me to remove my email address from your database. How do I do that?

Your email address can be changed via this page in account settings.

If you wish your account to be deleted, please send me a PM, or use the Contact Us form (linked at the bottom of each page) to request such.

Since this thread was 10 years old and some of the reasons back then are no longer applicable now, I'll close this up...

Locked.
