@Schulmantor: Yep, they grew em' pretty big back then. Good thing they had folks like Paul Bunyan around.

    @YUUU: Thanks of the encouragement.

    @sim_link: Update coming up...

@City_Master: In the logging industry, size does matter...

    Update 7: I’m a lumberjack…

    Fall 1853

Business at the Yarahi Mill was booming. The influx of pioneers to the region drove demand for wood planks through the roof. And it wasn’t just the area of New SorGun that was seeing growth. The entire west coast of the US was growing by leaps and bounds. Logging vessels were now frequent visitors to SorGun Bay, and a large logging operation was underway to satisfy the demand for timber.

    update70intro.jpg

A logging operation of this magnitude required some logistical support, and a central HQ building was built on the south shore of SorGun Harbor. This location offered easy access to acres of top quality timber.

    update71logginghq.jpg

Old growth forests in the Pacific Northwest were untouched by man and some of the trees grew to unbelievable sizes.

    22fir.jpg

Able bodied men from near and far began setting up makeshift camps. The work was hard, but the pay was decent.

The process of hauling the cut timber to the beach was made a little easier with donkey engines.

    Wikstromdonkey.jpg

The engine was essentially a powered winch, which could drag the logs toward it using steam power.

    update74donkeyengine.jpg

If you are interested in the actual history of logging in the Pacific Northwest, THIS website is very interesting.

Finally, an overview of the logging operation near New SorGun.

the details on the large logs and the 'paths' dragging them creates is very impressive. Of course I should expect nothing less - every update so far has been consistently well crafted.

Schulmanator: Nice. The RL and SC4 pix work together well. :ducky:

Thanks, I've learned from the best ;)

City_Master: Those trees are huge! SOme must be bigger than their houses :P

    Great update :)

Yes, old growth trees could certainly get gy-normous. The old picture I included in the last update was 22 feet in diameter. :O

nathanthemayor: What a nice little logging site. I paticulary liked how you used MMPs in your picture.

Thanks - the MMPs take some patience, but I think it ads quite a bit to the scene

LastTrueChamp: I said it in the City Journals section and I'll say it again here. Awesome update! :thumb:

    Thanks again for the support!

Benedict: the details on the large logs and the 'paths' dragging them creates is very impressive. Of course I should expect nothing less - every update so far has been consistently well crafted.

Thank you! I wanted to give the impression that the logs were being pulled by the Donkey Engine, and the ChrisAdams paths worked pretty well.

vivapanda: It looks very nice to see it growing, I like all the small houses and cottages between the large trees :)

Thanks, glad to see you stop by again :)

Cobhris96: This journal has my attention. History, attention to detail, it's all there.

Thank you for the nice comment - I look forward to your feedback.

Finally, it's been a little while since we've seen how the town of New SorGun has changed over the past year. Stay tuned - That and more, up next...

Can you give me links to the nature mods, like the forest trees you are using, and also the paths.

    Thank you.

    Great CJ. :D

    @City_Master: Westward ho!

    @vivapanda: Thanks!

@Cobhris96: It is currently the end of 1853

@samima: I am using Cycledogg's Olympic Tree Controler for most of my forests. I use plenty of other trees to fill in, and I think Marsh's Flora List is the best resource. It includes the ChrisAdams draggable paths that I believe you are looking for. Hope that helps.

Update 8: Revisiting the town of New SorGun

    Fall 1853

Over a year has passed since we’ve visited the town of New SorGun, and the small settlement has seen some big changes. The mill has provided plenty of jobs for folks willing to move to the wilderness – and the area surrounding the mill has seen a number of new houses pop up.

    update81millmosaic.jpg

Indian Point has grown too - here is a little animation showing the changes over the past year. (open picture in new tab if animation is not working)

    *animation*

    update82indianpointanim.gif

The flood of business at the mill has made Mr. Yarahi a wealthy man. He built his family a fine home on a small hill overlooking the harbor.

    update83yarahihouse.jpg

The corner of Main and Harbor has seen some new changes as well, T. Master built a storehouse near the docks to process all the goods that are beginning to flow into town.

    *animation*

    update84mainharbor.gif

Once considered the outskirts of town, the cattle pen has seen a number of houses constructed to house the influx of settlers.

    *animation*

    update85cattle.gif

Now let’s take a stroll down Main street – starting at the far edge of town and finishing at the docks. Big changes in a years’ time, but the conditions for growth have been near perfect for this little community. Many would consider New SorGun a boomtown – perhaps it is true – but times are a-changin’ and nobody knows if the next year will be as good as the last.

Massive Mosaic – click for full size – 3mb

    update86mainstmosaic.jpg

Despite the huge growth over the past year, the town is still lost among the surrounding wilderness. What will this community look like in 100 years? – only time will tell.

    Mithrik: That's a beautiful small town! :D

Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the comment Mithrik - I'll do my best :)

Fox: Love all the fantastic detail. You create such beautiful scenery pictures.

Thanks! The details are quite fun to add.

City_Master: New Sorgun has definitely grown a lot! All those houses! Everything is just growing! O'm keen to see what Sorgun will look like in a few more years!

Thank you! Although lots can happen in a few years ;)

Benedict: You have mastered the skill of making the town look alive - a bustling hive of industry!

Thanks Benedict - I really couldn't do it without all the great MMPs that folks have created.

sim_link: Just keeps getting better and better. Really like the look of your towns, but may I ask where you found those houses?

I appreciate the compliment! The majority of those houses are from C.P.'s Early 19th Century collection. Just do a power search on the LEX for C.P. and you will see all the different packs (Residentals in all wealth levels, and some higher density buildings as well)

Next time... A little tour of the farming community around New SorGun.

Wow, incredible. That town looks so realistic!!! Like real towns of that era with stables and horse pens right in town. This brings back memories of third and fourth grade when we did Wisconsin history and learned about logging. I remember drawing a whole log camp complete with fresh pancakes and loggers riding the logs down the river.

On a side note, I am losing my mind. I started hearing my GIF avatar actually make sounds!

Once again amazing attention to detail.

Love the fenced off cow yard, the horse rider on the street and the carriage in the front yard of the home.

@ sim_link: No problem - Those 19 Century houses are outstanding.

@packersfan: Thanks! You could say that your CJ was part of the reason I started this little project. I am fairly new to the CJ party and District of Wenzel was the first 'natural growth' CJ that I had really ever seen.

@ City_Master: I love that book! Thanks for your comment.

@ Fox: Thanks for your regular support!

@ zahrul3: Thanks - I'm fairly new to the LOTing world, so it takes a bit of time, but the results are fun to see in the game.

Update 9: The Farmer and the Cowman…

    Spring 1854

Farms! Agriculture has had a few years to develop in the region and the hard work is starting to bear fruit. New SorGun is boarded by the Cascade Mountains, which make up part of the Pacific Rim. The volcanos in the area have contributed to the rich soil that farmers are just beginning to discover.

    update91farms.jpg

The once dense forests are being transformed into farms of all shapes and sizes.

    update92crossroads.jpg

While steam engines and other technologies are just beginning to change the face of the world, farmers in New SorGun are still plowing fields with oxen – just as it had been done for centuries before.

    update93plow.jpg

While most of the farms are still relatively remote, a number of farms near the town of New SorGun are starting to see houses built near the fields.

    update94farms.jpg

Fruit trees, like apples and peaches, were being cultivated by local Indian tribes long before the first settlers arrived. Their expertise has proven very helpful to many of the local farmers.

    update95apples.jpg

Cattle are still an important part of the local economy, and their numbers are growing with each new pasture.

    update96cowpen.jpg

As more trails and roads are being developed around the region, horses are becoming more important for transportation. A few stables have been constructed to accommodate the growing demand.

    update97horses.jpg

That’s all for now – Thanks for stopping by and I’d love to hear your feedback.

    Nice custom lotting there!

Your choice of BATs fits the CJ like a glove... and you made it historically and fundamentally accurate!!
