Update 4: Laying out a Town

    Spring/Summer 1852

Most settlers of the American West didn’t risk everything and set out into the unknown just for the adventure. No, it usually came down to money and the idea of bettering their lives. Some went West to strike it rich with a gold find, but most went with the idea of finding a claim of land and making an honest living. Our party was no different, and in those days starting a town could often lead to big riches down the road. The first settlers of New SorGun did just that in the spring and summer of 1852.

    update41tableofcontents.jpg

Town Center – The first cross roads in town eventually became home to the first store and storage shed. Mr. Onlyplace put up two buildings in the early spring, and one serves as a Saloon and the other a General Store. Both are quite popular with the townsfolk, one especially.

    update42towncenter.jpg

Denenny Home – The Denenny family was on the first boat to anchor in SorGun Bay. They worked hard all winter and early spring to get a proper house built. Their claim includes much of the northern part of town.

    update43denennyhome.jpg

Walker Farm – The Walker family was also part of the original settlers. Farmers by nature, they were able to plow and sow two fields, both of which are beginning to bare a nice crop as spring turns into summer.

    update44walkerfarm.jpg

Cattle – As word got out that a new settlement was springing up on SorGun harbor, other pioneers made the trek and began trickling in throughout the spring. Some drove cattle from settlements further south, which are now producing milk for the town.

    update45cattle.jpg

Inland Farms - Other new arrivals began working the fields where giant trees had once stood. Some were able to get houses built in the spring, and others are just beginning the task.

    update46inlandfarms.jpg

Harbor Road – The trail that runs along the waterfront became known as Harbor Road. Houses are now beginning to line the dirt track, and the few farms that were plowed in the winter are now showing signs of a good crop.

    update47harborroad.jpg

Crop Harvest – With summer in full force, a few crops are ready to be harvested. The entire town turns out to pick the fields leaving nothing to be wasted.

    update48cropharvest.jpg

24 brave souls began the year in crude shelters on the beach, now their town numbers over 100 and they are able to provide fresh food for themselves for the first time. Luck has been with this group of settlers over the course of the first year – only time will tell if that continues.

Great details in your frontier town :)

Thank you, I enjoy adding them

It looks like it has grown a lot! The town centre looks really nice! :)

Thanks! Sometimes a couple stores and a shed are all it takes :)

Thank you Hampi - the town is progressing quickly, and more changes will soon follow.

Excellent update! The detail is extraordinary.

    Thanks!

    And now a teaser...

Folks in New SorGun weren't too sure of the recent stranger stopping in town. He goes by the name of Yarahi. Mr. Yarahi.

He's been friendly enough - always leaves a nice tip at the Saloon. But he spends most of his time at the south end of town - taking notes - Nobody's sure what he's up to...

@Schulmanator: Thanks - scroll down for some answers...

@sim_link: I heard he was from a town known as simtropolis... :)

@City_Master: A little bit of the mystery will be revealed below.

    newsorgunmasthead.jpg

    Update 5: Heavy Construction

    Fall 1852

Well, it turns out Mr. Yarahi was up to something. A number of townsfolk were hired and construction began on the mystery project in the middle of the summer heat. Whatever it was, it was by far the largest construction project taken up by the residents of New SorGun.

    update51millconstructio.jpg

Pieces of the frame were quickly erected, and Mr. Yarahi was always a constant presence at the site.

    update52millconstructio.jpg

Finally, as the fall months collapsed away toward winter, New SorGun could now claim to be home to the regions first saw mill. Word got out quickly, and a number of small workers shacks sprung up around the massive structure. Teams of lumbermen began harvesting the good timber surrounding the mill, and the first stacks of cut lumber could be seen piling up in the yard.

    update53millmosaic.jpg

Some of the cleared land to the south of the mill became home to a number of Indians. It became apparent that the settlement of New SorGun could offer protection from enemy tribes, and opportunities for work and trade was another draw.

    update54indianpointover.jpg

Most of the townsfolk didn’t mind the close proximity of their new neighbors, as peaceful relations with the local tribes had been the norm up to this point. Plus, the Indian population in the area far outnumbered the settlers, so stirring up hostilities was not going to end well for the settlement.

    update55indianpointmosa.jpg

Mr. Yarahi bet his entire life savings on the success of his saw mill – If this little settlement could grow and prosper, he would become a rich man. But while the town had grown over the past two years, nothing was certain in the middle of the wilderness.

Very Nice! You CJ is so awesome! May I suggest somthing? Now that the town is growing, maybe a small wooden church would fit perfectly in the town? I have no idea though if such thing is allready avialable on stex but I would surely add to the realism of the town since people in those times where very religious...

Edit: If found this: I don't know if it fits though.

    and this :

Have I said how much I love the pace of development in your CJ? And who doesn't love a little bit of mystery!

Thanks Benedict, your feedback is always appreciated.

This CJ is becoming better and better.

    Thank you - that's all I'm hoping for :)

I'm curious to see what's being constructed by that man. Glad to hear that the Indians and settlers are getting along :)

The Yarahi Mill will play a prominent roll in New SorGun for some time to come - Saw Mills back then were often the life blood of communities in the Pacific Northwest because lumber was such an important export. And yes, relations between the settlers and native tribes have gotten off on the right foot, but the future is anything but certain.

Thanks YUUU! Yes, church was a very important part of early settlements, and New SorGun will be no different. At this stage though, every building in the town has been built out of necessity for the survival of the town - Church services were often run out of peoples houses until a town was settled enough to erect an actual church building, which is what I imagine happening in New SorGun. And thank you for the links!

Awesome as usual... the MMPs and just... everything!... is awesome. :D

Thank you for taking time to comment, sim_link! From your recent updates I know Windemere and Taschereau is keeping you very busy :)

    Awesome... I like it!

(BTW, if you are in Nashville, have you been by my favorite place? :)

Thanks! We've been in Nashville for less than two years, so I'm still trying to find all the good places to eat. But thanks to you I think I just found my new favorite place :)

Word of the New SorGun settlement started spreading in frontier towns like Portland, OR. Folks looking for a slice of land to call their own started hitching up the wagons and heading north. What this would mean for the settlement of New SorGun and the surrounding region is anybody's guess...

    Update 6: New Settlements

    Spring 1853

Since the founding of New SorGun, brave pioneers have been venturing to the area to start a new life. While many found their way to the original settlement, others ventured out to make their own claims. Today we will take a look at two little settlements that have sprung up in the past year.

    update61map.jpg

The first lies on the main road junction in the region (and the locals have called it “Junction” ever since). Nestled next to the Rannug River, it started out as a popular place to camp while folks made their way to New SorGun.

    update62junctionwagonca.jpg

    update63junctionwagonca.jpg

Now, in the spring of 1853, Junction has grown considerably, with almost 100 residents calling it home.

    update64junctionovervie.jpg

The town has a few farms, and is home to the first lumber yard outside New SorGun.

    update65junctionmosiac.jpg

The settlers of Materburg intended make New SorGun their home, but upon arriving last year they realized all the good land was taken. Finding suitable land further south near the mouth of Mater Creek, the town was laid out and has been growing steadily ever since.

A little closer look reveals a bustling town ready for further expansion.

    update67materburgmosiac.jpg

The influx of settlers to the area has been beneficial to the town of New SorGun, but with settlements springing up all over the region, will the original settlement be left in the dust? The competition has just begun...

Excellent job on the nature, it's really detailed. And I like those country houses you got there.

Thank you! It takes a little extra time to find and re-lot the wooden houses, but I think it adds some realism to the CJ.

    sim_link:

It is superb as usual! I love watching the inroads development makes into the trees, reminds so much of some sprawl-type developments today. :)

I'm so glad you like it. Thanks for continuing to stop by.

    Schulmanator:

They are doing great! Another awesome update!

    Thanks!

    City_Master:

Junction is growing very rapidly! Maybe to get more people to stay in New Sorgun sell more land around the outskirts of town? :)

We'll have to see - At this point folks are trying to grab the best land available, so I'm sure we will see a few more settlements pop up.

    And now a quick teaser:

The fall harvest came and went, but the town of New SorGun had little time to rest. With the saw mill in full operation, the cold months were the perfect time to harvest timber and clear land for the spring. Next up - lumberjacks, old school.
