Simtropolis 7.3.3 Bugs/Issues Report Thread

For the past couple of weeks I have now been getting error messages when I initially go the the forum. I cannot pin the exact time I noticed that this started happening, and had been waiting to see if others experience it, but perhaps I am the only one...

Typically, I am always signed in and go directly to the forum via the favorited link https://community.simtropolis.com/

However, now when I do so for the first time each session, just as the page is about to complete loading, I get the message, "Internet Explorer has stopped working," followed by a restart of IE and reload of the page with the follow-up message, "A problem with this webpage has cause Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab." I can then continue browsing the forum normally afterwards, but if I browse away from Simtropolis and then return to http://www.community.simtropolis.com/, I again get the error message and the crash/close/reloaded page.

If I instead browse to the home page https://www.simtropolis.com/ first, and then from there go to the forum, I do not experience the problem.

If I open multiple browser windows and browse the forum simultaneously on each, and then go directly to https://community.simtropolis.com/ at different times for each window, each individual window will be affected and reloaded separately.

This problem happens regardless of whether I am signed in or out, and continues even after clearing cache and flushing cookies.

Simtropolis is the only website among those which I visit for which I am now having this issue.

I am running Internet Explorer 9 version 9.0.8112.16421 on Windows 7 64-bit and it has worked fine previously. Microsoft suggested to try updating to Java 7 Update 9, as I was previously using Java 6 all along until this problem started, but updating such has not alleviated this issue.

(Yeah, yeah, we should all ditch IE, especially an older version, for Chrome, Opera, or FF...but that is currently not an available option.)

That's because there is no domain called: www.community.simtropolis.com. It's just community.simtropolis.com or www.simtropolis.com

Hope that resolves that.

There is nothing wrong with IE that a good remove command wouldn't fix. Microsoft is making such a fuss over mobile computing these days that you'd think they would get it right sometime. If you can't get Firefox, then I am afraid you should take this problem to Microsoft for support.

Opps, hehe...sadly, that seems an issue more of my slipshod typing in the early morning. Though my message accidentally makes that incorrect address at one point, I instead do only mean https://community.simtropolis.com/, which is where I am getting the error when I browse to it directly at the beginning of each session.

Hello everybody, I have for weeks now display pb (see pic hereafter) . According to Paeng's advice i.e. I should "allowing "cloudflare.com" (in my NoScript settings)..." but I have absolutly no idea of how to do it. Thanks a lot for any 'step by step" solution and Merry Christmas to all of you!

In NoScript, to allow scripts to run from a particular site, there are two main methods:

Method 1

  1. In Firefox, go to 'Tools' and then click 'Add-ons'. This will open the Add-ons Manager with a list of your installed add-ons.

  2. Go to NoScript and then click 'Options'. A window will then open as follows:

    noscriptoptions.png

  3. Go to the 'Whitelist' tab and enter the address of the site (cloudflare.com).

  4. Click 'Allow' to add the site to the list.
Note: sites in this list can be removed by clicking 'Remove Selected Sites'.

  5. Click OK to close the options window.

Method 2

  1. A quicker option is to hover over the NoScript icon on the Add-on bar. noscripticon.png
Note: you must have the Add-on bar enabled to do this. To enable the Add-on bar, right click next to the top menu (near 'Tools') and check the Add-on bar.

  2. Then click 'Allow cloudflare.com' as follows:

allowscripts.png

The site will be added to the same list as described in Method 1.

Hope this helps solve your problem. If you need any more assistance, don't hesitate to ask. :)

Dear Cyclone; thank you very much, that's what I call a step by step explaination; :thumb:

I did everything you said but unfortunatly I still have the same display pb; I allowed in particullary googleapis.com, simtropolis and cloudflare but it seems that all the scripts are not intirely allowed???

see point 1 and 2 on the pic hereafter! I am quite confused :???:

You need to allow everything on Simtropolis.com and Cloudlfare.com at the very least or the site will not work.

In your screenshot, the bar at the bottom says that 3 out of 7 sites are allowed to run scripts. It says 'Scripts Partially Allowed' because not all scripts are allowed to run on the page. The sites listed in this bar (highlighted) are the ones that you have successfully allowed:

scriptbar.jpg

This means there are still 4 scripts that are being blocked on the page. I wouldn't think all these are necessary to view the site (e.g. twitter.com), but it's worth giving it a go. To do this, click 'Allow all this page' on the menu. Alternatively, you can temporarily allow them first (the option immediately below). If it works, then select 'Allow all this page' to add them to the Whitelist.

allowall.jpg

The NoScript icon should then change from noscripticon.png to scriptsallowed.png when all scripts on the page are allowed to run.

Note: you may have to click it a few times for this to happen. Also, remember to refresh the page afterwards if it doesn't automatically.

Hope this works for you.

Thank you again for your help but unfortunatly nothing changed...! :(

OK, it might be worth temporarily disabling all Firefox add-ons. To do this, go to the toolbar and click 'Help', then 'Restart with Add-ons Disabled'. A pop-up window will open, click 'Restart', then 'Start in Safe Mode'. Firefox will then close and re-open with your add-ons disabled.

This will help identify if another add-on is causing the problem. To get them back, just close and open Firefox the normal way.

Hello! I am having a serious problem. I constantly get this message when trying to log into simtropolis:

http://imageshack.us/a/img141/6785/fmlej.jpg

Dirk has logged into my account and didn't experience a problem. I used to be logged in, but couldn't do anything but go in chat (not even log out). Then, when I cleared my cookies to figure out whether that was the problem, the site wouldn't let me back in (same problem as before). I now used a proxy service to get into my account, that is why I'm logged on.

I've also managed to log in from my new apartent, but now I'm at my parents' house for Christmas. In other words, there seem to be a problem with my IP address. Have I been IP banned? In that case, I have not been informed about it. Or is there some other problem? How can this be solved?

I tried chrome and didn't care for it and went back to Firefox. I don't think it is this site's responsibility to support any specific browser.

I suggest you examine your preferences and options and try to make it happen. One of the things you really need to look at are your filter arrangements, and this may not even be a browser problem, but a problem with your fire wall. Too many variables to guess at.

Whatever was very recently done to the site does not like Firefox. I cannot edit my own posted comments now or format text in any way when in FF. I can in IE, so it must be a ST vs FF issue. FF version 18.0.1 if that is a help. There's other little weird things as well, including everything appearing in Courier font and the Trixie nomination form not working. Anyone got a magic wand for this?

Must be a caching issue...? If your editor is only loading basic text formatting (ie Courier font) it means the javascript files aren't being loaded, which suggests that there's something mis-cached. Clear browser history in FF and try again?

I'm using FF 18 as well

For what it may be worth, I too have FF 18.0.1

Java may be the thing. FF keeps trying to disable it due to security issues...

Oh, oddly, whenever I try to give a reputation point instead I get taken here:

How weird is that?

I have the Error 500 popping up ever since the Beta of SC2013 was released.

When trying to access Simtropolis? Try clearing your cache. Sounds like you have mucho punko junko laying around.

I have the Error 500 popping up ever since the Beta of SC2013 was released.

Do you recall the times you received those errors? We did have a total of 13 minutes of downtime on:

01/26/2013 10:24:56AM

Amsterdam 3, Netherlands

HTTP Error 503

and Today we had 2 minutes of downtime (so far reported from France):

Timeout (> 30s)

01/27/2013 05:20:34AM

Strasbourg, France

So if you are saying you keep seeing the error 500, then either you're connecting from these areas or possibly your ISP has cached the error page. In any case, you can now check our status by going to: http://status.simtropolis.com/690056

We currently have an uptime of 99.98% in the last 7 days.

And 99.907% in the last 31 days:

Alright, um, I think this justifies me posting here for the first time in a long time:

ST Chat is a steaming pile of crap. The software just does not work. I'm aware that alternatives have been explored, but why in the seven circles of hell does it not work anymore?!

I've noticed that well, hardly anybody is in there, and it's pretty clear why. If, half the time, chat doesn't even load properly, then it's pretty clear that there is something fundamentally wrong with the software, and Dirk, if you're paying a considerable sum of money for it, I'd seriously be considering why you're blowing money every year on something that barely even works.

Some serious questions really must be asked of RealChat's developers. Particularly: what the hell are they smoking? o.O

-- SA

[edit] Should mention that I am indeed running the latest version of Java.

I could get onto the chat without problems yesterday. But in the mornings (GMT +1) there is hardly anybody there. Maybe it's time related, although that would be some serious State-of-the-Moon bug, which isn't a good deal either...

Sorry you're having problems, but are you saying the chat never loads for you? There were over 35 people in the chat this past weekend -- I was there, giving out beta keys ;)

Chat has its bugs, but it opens and runs fine for me. (I use Firefox a browser.)

Most of the avatars don't show up anymore, and there seems to be a few typing and link glitches like <span> causes some links to abort opening or 404's, Chrome browsers try to show a font that isn't on chat)

Example:

xyloxadoria: [c=#24211d" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2]gah stupid chrome :|[/c]

Speaking of chat, any chance of putting it back to it's own window? I liked it much better that way than tabbed like it is now.

Yeh the avatars have been buggy...

We have been looking into alternative chat software, we've tested a few but many of them lack the basic features we've all come to expect right now.

Chat does open in its own window -- dunno what ure talkin' bout... 0:)

And now we're back to the tiny window? I liked having it go out to a tab and not going out to another window.

Could the window not be created using Javascript so people that liked it going out to a Tab can middle-click and have it in a tab and those who want it in a window can just open it in a window?

Nope, chat doesn't work at all. It doesn't load at all, dunno why. Maybe it's Shockwave implementation or something.

Anyway, no matter - there's something else I've noticed which is a little weird.

I've browsed ST on my mobile phone, it uses the Mobile theme, which is good. But there's a weird oversight: no easy way to go from say, the first page to, for instance, page 20, without having to go through every page in between. Is it possible to add a few extra links into the mobile theme UI that allows you to: select a page to go to; select the last page of a topic (particularly useful since clicking on a topic in forum topic view sends you to the first page of that topic, and there's no easy way to go to the last page).

On a related note, image resizing for the mobile theme seems to be a bit weird. It forces the images to 100% width of the viewport (that's OK), but for some reason it either retains the original height of the image or forces it to 100% of the viewport (not so OK, often results in image distortion)... and even more weirdly this only seems to happen to older posts (ie. before ST7 switched to the current forum software), so I dunno if there's some extra HTML in there that's causing them to go a bit weird.

Just giving you a heads-up, I'm not sure how frequently the mobile theme is used, though.

I'm using the latest version of Chrome on Android, FYI. I'm assuming Safari for iOS devices would have something similar as they're based off the same rendering engine.
