I often drive through the area north of Birmingham since I bought my quiet little house at Isleyburgh, and oftentimes I thought there might be room for some more suburban development here. It's a nice spot: close to Turry, yet fairly leafy and astonishingly rural-looking.

    TU-CJ-146_NoBrmghm_plan.jpg

The major district, actually with its own municipality, is Woodneck. I took a couple of pictures, as I was once considering buying a house there -- that was before I found the little gem at Isleyburgh.

    TU-CJ-148_Woodneck_Church.jpg

Woodneck is excellent for middle and upper middle class  families with its three elementary schools and a well-designed high school.

    TU-CJ-149_Woodneck_Lower.jpg

And particularly nice, I think, is its public pool on the foot of the hill with a view over the Valley:

    TU-CJ-150_Woodneck_Pool.jpg

There is one drawback about this suburb, though: Most commuters have to rely on their own cars, or take the bus. The suburb is quite far away from the next rail station or motorway entrance.

    TU-CJ-151_Woodneck_traffic.jpg

Making problems worse, the dual carriageway (avenue) into turry ends in the middle of the suburb. In an effort to keep traffic from cutting through residential streets, one ways and street blocks have been implemented to keep traffic on the main thoroughfares. Expanding the road network or building rail or an underground isn't possible, for political, financial reasons as well as for lack of space.

Therefore, new developments in the area must be restricted to what for the existing road network can handle, which isn't much:

Nice hilly town! Besides its great overall design the highschool and the public pool are really highlights!

That traffic analysis fits to a lot of places IRL I know yet their mayors were not that clever to limit developements ...

    Wallace

Maybe you remember (no, you don't!) how ridiculous Wallace used to look like when I arrived here?

     <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files/TU-040529-CJ047_WAL01grey.jpg align=baseline>

With lower taxes than the City of Turry it has attracted a lot of businesses since then. And the Four Globe Arena from page 1 has been transformed in a huge shopping centre with easy access by car, being next to a motorway exit, and fairly good access by metrorail, if you don't mind a 2 minutes' walk from the station to the shopping area. Now that I'm the mayor, well, doesn't it just look lightyears better? Huh?

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/turry/pics/TU-CJ-160_Wallace50.jpg align=baseline>

Wallace! Low taxes, great shopping facilities, great access by road and metrorail. The number one shopping area in the Northern Suburbs!

But low-rent flats are also available at Wallace -- beteween a large railway intersecion and the shopping area. I think the railway intersection was particularly well done.

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/turry/pics/TU-CJ-161_Wallace50.jpg align=baseline>

Swimming pools, a major sports infrastructure and good education make Wallace one of the most attractive communities in the Northern suburbs.

Presentation and storyline?  errr.... Mayor Dannato's kind of lazy today, so he just thought he'd post a couple of screenshots of a nice suburb (outside his jurisdiction, but who cares).

As for Dannato's life as a mayor, well... He's still just working, seeing his mistress, avoiding his wife, arguing with his clan, manipulating local businessmen, lying to the city council, and intimidating the opposition.

Business as usual for the time beining in the city of Turry. But beware.  This can't go on like this forever...

It's nice to see this updated, although you have said it will be. I like the changes to Wallace, and the demise of that weird four-glope contraption. It looks much better now. I was surprised by your naming the remaining globe the globe arena, since that's the name of another building in my landmark menu, but no matter. Great job yet again.

The aerial views of Turry are awesome... feels like being on a plane! The drawn concepts for further city developments and the sidestory of Mr. Dannato complete a CJ of outstanding quality that is nearly 2 years old.

The age of the journal makes the evolution of Simcity 4 visible: from the standard rushhour edition to a city including many BAT's and lots and nice terraforming..

Please keep up the work for your CJ, dannato!

Leave it to me to notice the tiny details, but I really like your use of ground-to-elevated rail transitions in Wallace. In fact, your use of rail in general is extremely realistic.

    Sweet update dude.

    Hi Dannato.

The metrorail and commercial buildings are a great impovement for Wallace, indeed. And it looks quite realistic with the rail overpasses and the road layout. This could very well be in real life 'Turry' 2.gif.

I like how you plan out everything and it seems that you enjoy to improve existing areas. Also great choice of BATs.

Take care and thanks for your visit to my CJ.

    Great update!

Although I'm kinda sad you (partially) removed the Four/Three Globe Arena 28.gif ! I loved the way it looked, it was a real Landmark!
Oh well, I'll get over it. The other development in the region is very nice though, it makes up to it 44.gif .

    See you next time! 35.gif

Great update, Keep it going...I also like how you did the last update with the soft suburban development. It gave me some ideas for some of the older areas of my region. As you have done for a long time now...you continue to be a souce of insperation.

    A Note on this Journal

Some might have noticed the absence of updates in the last few months. Why? Well...

This city journal has now been here for a long time, May 2004, if I'm not mistaken. Turry has now a population of just slightly over 2 million. I have no ambition of increasing that number further. Turry is now fully grown.

Early on in this journal, I attempted a storyline to explain how I, or Dannato, came to be mayor. My limited amount of creativity, imagination, and, above all, time, is currently invested in my other journal --Danapolis, Growing in Iceolation. If there has ever been any kind of recognisable storyline in Turry, I now officially declare it to be discontinued.

What I want to do with the Turry region from now on is merely playing around with this old region at will, with a focus on making it look more aesthetically pleasing and possibly more realistic. I will post some pictures with some quick explanatory notes, but the focus is now on the game and on the pictures only. Having two journals, updates in Turry will be less frequent and created in a less time-consuming style.

At this occasion, let me once again thank everybody who's been following this and dropping a comment from time to time.

That said, welcome to the second part of the journal, the bonus section, as it were.

    **************

    Defontaine & Lower Tollsbury

Looking at an older pic of Lower Tollsbury, I don't think you'd still recognise it.

    TUC-040713-CJ-44_LWTHornPark01.jpg

Turry's south-east end near the expensive Gold Coast was massively bulldozed and rebuilt. (Obviously not the way you'd destroy and redevelop areas in reality.)  The population has now almost doubled, to 19,000.

    TU-CJ-170_Defontaine01.jpg

I took up some more elements from the respective area in real-life Zurich (Tiefenbrunnen / Zollikon) while rebuilding, but still, this is no recreation. E.g. location of the Casino are inspired by real life too, but the real casino is no longer a casino, and it's no highrise building either.

    TU-CJ-171_Defontaine02.jpg

There are two ferry terminal and two metrorail stations in this city district: to the north, the Turry Casino Ferry Terminal and Defontaine Station (left), Tollsbury Ferry Terminal and Tollsbury Station; further to the south (right).

    TU-CJ-172_Defontaine-LwrTollsbry_Stns.jp

Further to the south in towards the centre of the suburb of Tollsbury, there is a Yacht club.

    TU-CJ-173_Defontaine_YachtClb.jpg

Before the yacht club, there is a complex bridge over Lakeside Drive and the railway line (right picture) which wasn't quite easy to build. But the NAM is really powerful, the bridge is even perfectly functional. The only thing I don't like at all is the corner bridge section. It should be rounded.

So that's it for tonight, (it's half past three a.m. in Central Europe. I better go to sleep now!)23.gif

I am sorry to hear that Turry is being somewhat retired. But I understand the reasoning for it. But it has been an incriedably enjoyable and informitive (I learn most of what I know citywise from here).
    thank you Dannanto for this..

I don't think that this suffers at all without the storyline. I like the changes, including the rock and water mods (or at least the changes to the shoreline slope that made the rocks visible. I also like the formatting, with the pictures next to each other and the inset map. This all looks great.

Here's to Turry, it has had a great run.

It's always nice to go back and rebuild things, using newly available tools (new BATS and advances in the NAM, etc.) and greater skills that we've gotten. I too think this will be fine without a story line; I think you've established the story quite well to-date. The overpass over Lakeside Drive is nice... you're right, they take some effort to construct but usually end up looking quite nice.

One the one hand it is a pity since this CJ is one of the best at all (and has its trixie well deserved).

On the other hand, when I see the regional map I can understand you. And you have now two CJs.

Anyway I will be looking for Danapolis updates as well as for turry updates.

    Now to the update:
What really fascinates me is the way the region changed slowly. The old pics are good, the new are better. They show perfectly how you developed your style (look at the avenue and the railwayline!)

    Have a good time!

I agree with Bernhard - the gradual evolution of this city is its most interesting aspect. But you should go have fun with Danapolis and maybe take time to go back and putz with your old cities from time to time. Or perhaps Turry could make a cameo appearance in Danapolis! Looking forward to wherever this goes. 48.gif

I understand your decision to finish Turry. Danapolis is a great CJ. But I'm glad that you're providing some updates of Turry from time to time. I also like the improvements you made. Great evolution indeed.

    Take care.

    Hello Mayor Dannato,

I will start by saying that your trixie was well diserved.

Secondly, After reading this CJ on and off for 6 days I was very impressed and then sadened by the fact that you will no longer be continuing this CJ on a regular basis. 28.gif  I do understand you reasoning (CJ started May 2004 - January 2006).  It is time to move on.  The way you thought about then re-thought your place of everything was very realistic. You get 44.gif44.gif's up.

I will look in on your other journal when I get a chance.

Thank you for a wonderful CJ.

    Great update!

Too bad the story is over, but wasn't it already a little...
And ofcourse, this city is fine now. With 2 mln citizen (if only I...) and a beautifull region view, these are things to be very proud of and for me jealous 43.gif.

It's cool that you now do it for fun, AND update us on it, I really love reconstructions, so that is a good thing 44.gif!

I'll miss those Donnato brothers.28.gif7.gif45.gif  Great to see that you'll continue making improvements.  This is one of my favorite CJ and one of my favorite developed regions.  I'm glad to see the area still continues to improve.  19.gif29.gif I'd also love to see the downtown area again, and the old city especially beuatified. 10.gif

Thanx for continuing this CJ, it must be tough there in Iceolation.!17.gif
