Marrast's embankment set looks great in your city. I was planning to test that in my city too. And the bridges look very realistic. I wonder how you got that made.

However, I like the story update. The narrator does not seem to be a relationship expert though 2.gif.

Where Digby is perfect due to its superb rural charakter and Crystal junction because of its urban / desert characters the absolute strength of your cj is the perfect balance between urban and rural charakter ... 44.gif

and yes, it reminds me of a certain country in the middle of europe ... 10.gif

plus a nice storyline!!!

man did you discourage me from starting a cj ...

[just kidding!!!]

    Improving North-West Central

    There comes a time in a city's development when growth in numbers gives must be sacrificed to improving quality of living. With a temporary peak of 411,000 residents, Central Turry has probably reached its maximum. Population now keeps floating just below the 400,000 line. The wards of Limouth Town and Ashley White, basically a working-class inner city area north-west of the city centre, have seen a steady growth in population, but also a steady decline in average wealth. New buildings are usually low-wealth, many of the better houses are delapidating.

    More parks please
    One problem of these two wards is the almost complete lack of greenery and recreational areas. The construction of a large park, however, would have a very heavy impact on the number of jobs and homes not only in the neighbourhood, but in the city as a whole. So a large park is not an option. Instead, several small green spots were built -- mostly just a lawn, a few benches and a playground. Even the largest park is only 140 m x 160 m, including a pond, a football field and three baseball courts.

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/TU-CJ-070_NW_parks.jpg align=baseline>

    Better public transport

    Comparing the above large view with an earlier picture, you'll also a new elevated rail line, leading to the renovated Ashley White Station. The new parks and the rail viaduct make the area look more realistic that the previous featureless grid.

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/TU-CJ-072_NW_rail_b4-after01.jpg align=baseline>

    The new rail line however is just one part in a much wider mass transport network renewal project. My aims are somewhat contradictory. On the one hand, I want it to be more realistic. On the other hand, I have a congestion issue to solve.

    Realistic station and network density in a functional Sim City. Is it possible?

    Early on in the game, I created a mass transport network which is way too dense compared with reality. E.g., in a mid-density urban area, the distance between bus stops is something between 300 and 500 metres, i.e. 18 to 30 tiles; Underground stations vary, but one could say for this kind of density one stop every 400 to 600 metres (25 - 40 tiles) is common. Commuter rail systems (normal rail tracks, not light rail) might stop every 3 - 4 kms in suburban areas, and exceptionally might have two stations as close together as 2 kms (125 tiles) or even less, especially closer to the urban core.

    However, many transit buildings in Central Turry are already overcrowded -- especially bus stops and elevated rail stations -- Ashley White Station is one of them, usage here reached more than 500% at peak times. The relatively high population density in this area is only one reason. But my Traffic Cop settings also favour mass transport over car usage. (My roads ar all bright green). So I decided to change the Transit settings again to make more sims use their own cars. Think of it as simulating the effect of increased wealth and car ownership as time evolves.

    ---> Here's a shot of the current Traffic Cop settings I use.

    I hope we'll see more on mass transit in some later update. Thanks for your visits, views and comments.

    Nice little urban renewal-type update.

    I too started off making transit stops much more frequently than in real life. Now I am trying to make it more like real life, by spacing them out a bit more for aesthetic reasons, but it works for me because I tend to heavily favor car traffic in my cities.

    The Ministeries

    Apeasing former officials who know too much by appointing them to a lucrative position in the state administration is a good option if you want to avoid tough opposition, or even a coup. This is why the National Government requires more space for its ever growing bureaucracy. And a mayor's post in the nation's capital city is a very good stepping stone to maybe become President one day. So I thought it might be a good idea to show some goodwill to the current government by destroying some 1,800 people's homes and 800 commercial jobs to build two new ministerial buildings behind the Military Police HQ.

    TU-CJ-066_Ministeries.jpg

    Conditions in the city prison have improved considerably, so the cemetary right next to the prison ( cf. old image on page 4 ) was no longer needed. The dead buried there were notorious traitors, sectarian gurus, terrorists and nazis. Those graves had attracted followers of subversive groups, so the city council decided to remove the cemetary. The exhumation and relocation of their idols has led to rallies and riots by the members of above-mentioned anti-democratic forces. Many of them have been brought to the new Military Hospital after clashes with the police. They have been reported missing ever since.

    TU-CJ-067_Ministery&Hospital.jpg

    Credits - Left should be Hiroshima City Hall (if I'm not mistaken) and on the right: Red Cross Hospital. Icouldn't find the names of thes builders, sorry. Both can be found in this thread: Massively Gigantic Japanese Lots .

    At the inauguration party for the new ministerial building, I was standing with my glass of champaign, talking to some very influential but terribly boring bloke from the government, as all of a sudden, amidst the crowd, I saw Theo, coming toward me.
    Hey, my old friend! I said cheerfully, opening my arms. He didn't return my greetings. Instead, he just said with a low and frosty voice:
    What you did to me the other day wasn't very nice. And it was completely unjustified.
    I don't know what you're talking about, I replied.
    Arr, come on! he snorted. The St. Martin's Lounge. About your wife. You overreacted. I just tried to do my job.
    I didn't understand what he was talking about. He was accusing me of picking a fight or somehting. He seemed completely out of his mind. So I tried to calm him down: Okay, okay. We'll talk. But I'm sure you understand that this a very inappropriate moment. Give me a call sometime this week, we'll talk, but you gotta please calm down. Without saying a word, he turned around and left.

    Thanks everybody for your views and comments.

    Oroen: thanks again. Road traffic will certainly increase here as well.

    BourneId: in fact I thought of widening the rail track area. It's still a little narrow.

    Your city has undergone great improvements. I like how you planned out the new transportation system.

    Continuing the storyline really was a good idea. I wonder where this leads us to...

    RLS plus playing the game plus dabbling with my own custom lots doesn't allow frequent journal updates. Also, there's so many excellent journals by now, I think my ol' town hasn't too much to offer by comparison. Still I thought I'd throw in a little update.

    I've been trying to make the central areas look just a little more old-worldly, mixing landmarks and modded commercial ploppables by Xannepan and Porkie on the one hand, some of Erdmoebel's Berlin buildings and some Dutch-style builings by Vanderaap (both growable), on the other.

    The largest residential wall-to-wall blocks lie to the west of the centre. The most intact blocks can be found around Helvany Square:

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/TU-CJ-073_So_Helv_Sq.jpg align=baseline>

    Below a wall-to-wall row on Bath Avenue, north of Fielding Park:

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/Bath_Av_Fielding_Park_North%20Kopie.jpg align=baseline>

    In the residential areas east of the centre buildings, street layouts and blocks tend to be smaller, and the neighbourhoods more quiet:

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/TU-CJ-075a_Eastside.jpg align=baseline>

    Traffic and Transport -- The transport advisor reported no significant traffic problems after the new Traffic Cop Rules have been implemented. Among a very few others road sections, Long Street railway underpass is dark orange in traffic view, but that's because it's a custom lot on which Traffic Cop has no impact. Here's a pic of that underpass, also showing the widened tracks leading into West Central Station.

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/TU-CJ-074_WCStn09.jpg align=baseline>

    The area around West Central Station is not a pretty part of town, but in the soft light of sunset there's something to it. It's quite lively at night.

    <ahttp://homepage.hispeed.ch/dannato/pics/simcj/turry/TU-CJ-075_LT-dawn.jpg align=baseline>

    And as for my private life as mayor, oh well, here goes:

    The incident with Theo at the inauguration event got me worrying. Though I don't remember anything, an uncanny feeling remained. I had a sleepness night over that. I went to see Monica Lubitsky, Dr. Vu's assistant, to see what she thinks.
    He said something about me beating him, I told her. First, I thought he was crazy, I don't beat people, never did. But somehow I feel like there is a big black whole in my memory. That's doesn't have something to do with the brain transplant, does it?
    Nah, that's very unlikely. The old Dannato did get out of hand at times, but basically this shouldn't have any influence. And about your black-outs... you didn't drink too much, did you you?.
    I denied.
    If it happens again, I'll get you an appointment with Dr. Vu, but I don't think you should worry too much -- And by the way... sweety, when can spend some time alone again? How's your search for the house going?
    She was talking about the house I've been looking for where the two of us can meet in private, without anybody knowing.
    I'll visit a couple of places this week, I promise her.
    I wish we could choose them together, she said. How long must all this hiding go on?
    We'll find a way, honey. The sound of footsteps from the nearby corridor kept us from kissing.

    [Author, thinking to himself: I somehow gotta get out of this pointless story. But where t.f. is the emergency exit?]

    ^^ I totally agree! I really like the West Central Station area, as well as the old-worldly look. The second pic is a bit twisted, am I right? Looks like a Photoshop effect

    In spite of all the new journals around now, it's always to see you back! You've always been best at your transit layout, and I can really picture myself coming into West Central Station as I would come into any European rail terminal.

    And pointless stories are fun aren't they... 10.gif

    yay, a turry update! this is probably my favorite CJ here; i only joined simtropolis recently but i've been following turry for a while and i have to say this is a wonderful CJ. i'm telling my CJ in first person now, because of this CJ (admittedly, alot of CJs do that, but yours was what made me want to do it that way). and the cities are so realistic, it's amazing; don't worry, turry looks just as good as ever. anyway, i hope you can update more in the future 44.gif

    p.s. what's RLS? i've seen it mentioned before, is it some kind of virus?

    The Turry Commons -- I've spent quite some time and some money improving the Commons, to the south-west of Central Turry. This is rather large recreational area, including a minor league stadium, a large sports ground, woods, lawns, walkways along the river banks.

You wernt just given that Trixie...you earned it...and you have continued to have a very high quality, well presented and one of the best layed out (realisticly) journal here. Look forward to seeing more for a long time to come....I mean were else would I get insperation from if not you.

    Your CJ is amazing! It is one of the few that I have enjoyed reading from its beginning. Your blend of rural and urban is stunning, especially when you try and keep everything to scale.

    I hope you continue to update this CJ.....I'm looking forward to reading more!
