Turry Metro Region to Scale

In ancient times, in a province called Helvetia, there was a little settlement called Turicum, located on the east bank of a minor river, flowing out of a long and narrow lake. People were going peacefully after their business, when suddenly a mysterious disturbance in the time-space continuum created a parallel world, the Sim World, where things went on developing their own way. One such development is the city of Turry, Helvany.  I don't know much more about Turry's history. But I can tell you about its present, and its plans for the future.

those aerial shots of your region are indeed quite realistic looking. i like all the farms and small communities that blend in to the city in a very organic way. keep up the good work.1.gif

Holy smokes, that is amazing.  It looks as close to a real life satelite(spelling?) aerial as I've ever seen in this game.  I dont know how you had the patience or time that it obviously took to fill out the entire region, but I gotta give you props for what you've accomplished.  Great job!

The Western suburbs and city districts are referred to as the Limouth Valley. The cities of Engleston and Sliro, and the Turry city districts of Aldstead, Greenwich, Hunkers have developed along the Limouth River Valley, one of the areas of early industrial development. The area has more than 200,000 residents, many of them low-wealth.

The city district of Greenwich is a newer development, with a lot of space dedicated to transit (M11), large green strips and sports grounds between residential high-rise and the industrial zones.

The North-West is dominated by the City of Rainbury and the Cat Lakes, surrounded by farms and forests. Bottom right is the Turry district of Appledore and Mt. Hunkers. The Northern Beltway should one day cut through this area. Something like 25,000 live in and around Rainbury.

    TU-040522-CJ010_Rainb.jpg border=0

Rainbury Green (the Western end of Rainbury) mixes industry (bottom left), low density commercial, residential and agricultural zones, and features some free space (woods) as well. A typical Turry suburb.

*knock knock* Captain I think that's an airport I see over there just east of Aldstead and south of Hunkers.

Nice region, it looks quite realistic to me. Keep up the great work44.gif

This is a fine region you have here, very realistic typically English place names together with our beautiful patchwork quilt-looking agricultural areas. 44.gif

sc4ky: you are partly right.  That is an old air force base. Not actually for civil use.  But I guess if we need to do an emergency landing, we can certainly ask for landing permission there.

That air force base is planned to be closed: the area around it has grown too dense, noise and pollution is keeping land values low... A new air force base has already been built elsewhere.

The South-East of Turry is a hilly area called the Panstick Range. Whitacker and Hottington in the background are Turry city districts. The main avenue cutting diagonally through the hills is Fork Avenue. Population of this area:  76,000.

We can now see the Central area.  What you can see in the picture is most of the City of Turry with just a few of the outer city districts cut off.  The large map that makes the Central City (includes Seaule Acres, Ashley White, Lakefield and Staiton) has 220,000 inhabitants. The entire shot below would probably amount to about 470,000.

The industry basically developed towards the West (along Limouth River), and in the North (around Earlington). The wealthier residential areas are located South and East of the centre, around the Lake and towards Turry Hill. However, the area between Turry Central and Hill is oddly empty with only some patches of farmland. This is something Dictator Dannato don

The further north you go, the larger the farming areas. The lower Glad River Valley is broad and flat, the gates here in the North are open wide for new development. Already the area has close to 100,000 industrial jobs and just as many white-collar workers. Development centred around the city district of Earlington and the cities of Gladbrook and Louton (well over 30,000 inhabitants each).

Turn east, man! East! ...  ... yes, just like this!  Good boy!

The North-East and East. Cutting through the quilt-like countryside of the North-East, you can see the large motorway intersection at Bruton Cross. And just below, east of Dubbindore, north of Glenn...

    /idealbb/files/TU-040524-CJ035_North-East.jpg

... the airport? Or just another military base?

    /idealbb/files/TU-040529-CJ037_TDUfar.jpg

Both. We will be landing at Turry Dubbindore Airport (TDU), a small municipal civil and military airport combined. Obviously, this combination creates some difficulties in aviation, capacity and airport management generally. Also, transit infrastructure is very rudimentary: Although close to Easterland Ave and to the M22 (other map), access to the airport itself is relying merely on a simple road and bus service.

    /idealbb/files/TU-040529-CJ038_TDUclose.jpg

Though rather provincial, TDU still seems to satisfy the needs of this metropolitan region of 1,147,715 souls, although it starts getting close. And the Hampton Inn will certainly satisfy my needs for this one night - I'm way too tired to travel downtown after this stressful flight. Yawn. 23.gif   Hope the planes won't wake me up too early tomorrow morning. Hell, still can't believe we've reached the ground unharmed.

The railway now turns south, and just after crossing the edge of the map, we are entering a tunnel. This tunnel runs under the city district of Buchanan, located on a hill between Earlington and Central Turry. The tunnel ends only two tiles away from the Central Turry boundary, without a station. This is a real shame, for two reasons.

    /idealbb/files/TU-040601-CJ061_BUC01Tunnel1.jpg

First, Sims never use the tunnel. Whether this refusal is categorical, or it

As we're underground, on the U3, we can't see what travellers can see when they enter Turry by passenger rail.

    /idealbb/files/TUC-040612-CJ-85_WCS11.jpg

The two ToysRus are new.  I don't know why they had to build two of them right next to the rail. Maybe it's cos kids just love trains, maybe it increases sales of Railroad Tycoon.

Historical note - Due to capacity bottlenecks, a new South West terminal was added recently. Some people say it wasn't needed, and it was just because Dictator-Mayor Dannato was bribed by some city journalist, who needed the station to look good for his journal...

Statistical note - usage the Main Terminal is currently 73%, the new South West Terminal 28%.  Parking garages: average 8%, bus stations are hoplessly crowded. Underground station usage is 75%.
Anyway, who cares, here's the same thing viewed from the east.

    /idealbb/files/TUC-040612-CJ-85_WCS21.jpg

And again, here's a zoom 2 view towards the north, to help you see where we are on the Central Turry map.

Central Turry is on a large map. At this point, let me issue a
Warning -  DON'T use large map for your city centre! Growth - and performance - can get disgustingly slow!

    /idealbb/files/TUC-040612-CJ-85_WCS3.jpg

Thanks to SimGoober for ToysRus, but there was really no need for two of them 2.gif
The Terminal Station (with un-connectable tracks) I downloaded from SimCity Central - yes, I took that liberty; the trail park is (was) by Pegasus. It doesn't work anymore, everytime I want to plop it comes with houses instead of plants. So I consider them historical.

So this is West Central Station. We got quite some time to kill. Any idea where to go?  How about breakfast? Or do you have another suggestion?
