Whenever I hear "Oilers" I think of this guy.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Ah, the bridges of Königsberg! I remember it was in my maths handbook when I was in my last year of high school. Shame all the difficult maths (limits, derivatives, integrals, gonionometry,...) is gone. That happens when you choose to study history :P

I read the "Oilers" comment and immediately thought Bum Phillips, Jerry Glanville (NMU Alum!) and Warren Moon, too.  Then I was like, "Wait, when did we start talking about the NFL?"  Then I was like, "Oh yeah, Edmonton."

It is entirely possible that this is posted for the sole purpose of running up the numbers.

I tend to keep wanting to pronounce Euler's name "You ler"... after all, Euclid is "You clid", not "Oi clid".

Of course, the name Euclid only features so prominently in my mind because Euclid Avenue is a noteworthy station on the NYC subway (southern/eastern end of the C train). Trains are more important than geometry. :P

Yeah, why can't Swedes from the 18th century and Greeks from the 3rd century BC agree on pronunciation? :P

It was always odd that Connecticut had its own NHL team. Connecticut is not a prime location for a top-league sports team - New York and Boston are the nearby logical locations, and there isn't a city in Connecticut large enough to really handle a pro team by itself without eating into the adjacent markets.

Indeed, that's how Connecticut goes: the southern and western half of the state supports New York teams, and the northern and eastern half of the state supports Boston teams. CT Route 9 is the border between the two.

Where I'm from (Toledo, OH) you get mostly Detroit fans for everything, but the most contentious is the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry, a rivalry recognized as quite possibly the most hotly contested, uh, rivalry in the nation.  The city and its surrounding areas generally run about 50-50 OSU-UM.  It's probably only a 30-40 minute drive to Ann Arbor, the 8th circle of hell home of UM, but sinceToledo is in Ohio, you wind up with both fans.  And they hate each other.  UM fans just suck, take my word for it.

That being said, I don't treat sports as nearly as important as I used to.  The Penn State Jerry Sandusky scandal and an article by Tucker Max comparing sports to an abuse spouse/mate both made me kinda realize that most people think they're too important, they support them with too much fervor, and treat them as something more than a fun way to waste an afternoon.  They're games, they're supposed to be fun, right?  I shouldn't feel crappy just because the Giants swept the Tigers out of last year's World Series, and sports should NEVER be so important as to cover up major crimes the way they did in Penn State, and the way they're doing with soccer match-fixing all over the world.

To add to that, Spidey, the NHL's most recent proposal would eliminate the Red Wings/Blackhawks rivalry. How very absurd!

What you say about CT, Duke reminds me that when I was younger, I assumed that cities without a big league team in any of the 4 major sports were, "small and insignificant." Obviously that isn't true.

The thing to remember is that it's more about the region than the city. El Paso, Texas is larger than many cities that host a professional team, but Texas already has two MLB teams, two NFL teams, and three NBA teams, and it's close enough to also have fans of Arizona teams.

The city is also home to a lot of Latin American immigrants who don't really care about (American) football, basketball, or hockey.

And despite being a fair sized city, it's surrounded by a lot of sparsely populated desert, so it doesn't have much of a metro area to back it up like most cities with sports teams do.

I'm a baseball fan, and Houston shouldn't have moved with the Rangers even if they did make a rivalry*

But purists will of course object to having interleague play throughout the season to facilitate their being an odd number of teams in each league. There were no regular season interleague games ever until 1997, when MLB decided to try it as a gimmick because some interlague matchups that were natural rivalries (such as Yankees/Mets or White Sox/Cubs) could be popular and draw large crowds. And at first, they were - I remember when if you wanted to go see a Yankees/Mets game you had to be prepared to shell out at minimum a couple hundred bucks per ticket. But now the pony has done its trick, it isn't novel anymore, and those games are no more popular than any other regular season game. I went to see a Yankees/Mets interleague game a few years ago and the tickets were the same price as for every other game during the season.

I can personally vouch that nobody in Connecticut really gives a damn about the Huskies unless they go or went to UConn themselves. Not in the southwestern corner of the state, anyway.

Larks, you must embrace the guitar and acknowledge its superiority in the presence of turntables! Or don't. You'll get by either way.

I find the guitar to be the most overrated instrument of all time, especially the electric, good as a torture weapon to make people deaf though.

    Piano triumphs all, FACT.

Like Jim Jones said, Rappers are rockstars without the guitar.

Piano music makes me bored out of my skull.  Except Gershwin, I'll listen to a good Gershwin tune any day, any time.  Summertiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime...  And the livin's easyyyy...

I'm a rock guy.  Rap is okay to me.  I tend to only be music snobbish towards the pop music factories.  I don't think we're all cut from the same mold anyways.  Would the world still be interesting if we all loved the same music?  Although we should all despise elevator music and the RIAA.

Well, that was awesome.  As a former marching band member, I do so love a good drum solo.  Swiss Top Secret are awesome.

Speaking of awesome, it's time to dot the "i" even though we're nowhere near opening day...
