I wonder if one of the double posts was mine. I had had some trouble with the site responding and ended up with double posts in a couple of threads. I try to delete them as soon as I see them, but with slow response times... Anyways, if it was me, I'm totally NOT sarcastically sorry for that.

Right now I live in a place that has no good pizza, no good Mexican, and no good burgers. Oh you can get decent stuff that's passable, but not GOOD, you know? I totally wanna eat at Burgerfuel. I'm hungrier now than I was 40 minutes ago before I ate dinner.

There's a place next door that does burgers, but they're a bit pricey. I get a burger from there between about once a week and once a fortnight.

Their small chips is roughly the size of a McDonalds large, though. Proper thick chips, too. I get those more often.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Sounds like an interesting place, guessing it's an independent store though?

5554 Independent stores are normally alot better in quality and better for the community since people at huge chain stores such as mcdonalds pay their employees a pittance (always wanted to use that word), have questionable ethical and environmental practises and quite a bit of the money will go to the board or back to the main offices.

That may be true in many cases, however when you go into a big chain store/restaurant, you are getting a generally consistent, known product, which is something that a locally owned/operated store/restaurant does not always provide (although it occurs to me that franchises of certain chains can have consistency problems, too. But that is a whole different matter). That is not to say that one is better than the other, I am merely pointing out the risks involved. Best bet? Befriend the locals and they will show you the good places, and the ones to stay away from. Or just have a baby and you'll never be able to go out to eat anyways. Problem solved.

Yeah, Ma and Pop restaurants usually have better food, with higher quality ingredients. For instance, let's compare Pizza Hut and a local family-owned pizza restaurant near me called Prima Pizza. Pizza Hut's pizza is not bad, but its extremely greasy, doesn't use any spices, and it's fast-food-style-pizza, as I call it - meaning its cheap and halfway between Chicago style and NY Style - my favorite. (Hooray for run-on sentences) But the pizza at Prima Pizza is consistently good, NY Style - like a real pizza (sorry Chicago Style fans, but it's true) - and uses quality ingredients and spices/herbs.

I can take either or. Local joints are great, but when you're away from home you don't always want to blindly walk into some place you're unfamiliar with because you don't know what you're going to get. That's the advantage of chains like McDonald's. Brand name recognition.

As for environmental or ethical concerns... eh, large companies don't by any means have a monopoly on mistreating employees. Small businesses do it too. And yeah, fast food is served in disposable containers, and that creates a lot of trash, but the same can be said of take-out from anywhere.

Oh, and about pizza? Yeah, pizza chains all suck. Good pizza is harder to find the further away from New York you go.

The good thing about burgerfuel is that it’s sort of between franchise and local store. They can be found in most main cities/towns all over New Zealand, but this doesn't reduce quality or customer service.

Everything from the store comes in either a paper bag, or a cardboard box, made from recycled materials, which means they can either be recycled easily, or will decompose nicely in a land fill quickly. Even the oil from the fryers is made into bio fuel after they are done with it.

However, when going overseas, it’s nice to have something like a McDonalds because you know that where ever they go there will always be food you can recognise. I'd rather be eating the national foods, but for a quick lunch it is much easier.

Oh, and with Pizza, we have a small franchise over here too. They are called "Hell", and they do the best takeaway pizzas ever, and some of the best staff too.

I would rather go to an authentic pizzeria, but if its takeaways I need, then Hells is the best place to go.

place to go.

Wait, a franchise called "Hell"?

One of the advantages of chains like McDonald's and such is Convenience... I prefer cooking my own pizza than ordering one, but convenience is the one that's taking me back to the pizza chains.

I'm snrking at the idea that there's an "authentic pizzeria" in New Zealand. I'm sure I don't wanna know what pizza is like there.

One necessary condition to be called "authentic" that I seriously doubt your place fulfills (but correct me if I'm wrong): the shop has to be run by someone Italian.

I'm not saying that the place I mentioned is. And yes, if it is run by an Italian using Italian recipes, then I would call it authentic. Unfortunately the best one I've been too was in Sydney on the rocks, so I can't actually go there when ever I want. I would if I could, but I can't.

I have yet to try a good one in Wellington.

Not neccesarily. The place I mentioned earlier - Prima Pizza - is run by a man from Macedonia. Granted, that's very colse to Italy, but, oh well.

I'll be having pizza tonight. It definitely doesn't fit Duke's definition of authentic, but it does fit my definitions of "cheap" and "food". As a university student my definition of the first may be a bit tighter, and the second a bit looser, than those of most other people. :P

Or the disadvantage, MC donald's in the Vienna area sucks.

That's a small advantage of my country, Italy is a neighbouring country - that means many ex-italians, always good pizza xD

I don't mind fast food. I'll eat it if there's nothing else, and of course there's that once or twice a year unbearable craving where I NEED A McCHEESEBURGER. My wife cooks such good food though, that it's almost always a waste to go out. Except to one of either two Thai restaurants in Toledo, OH or Marquette, MI.

A small german word-joke made me lol. I guess I have to explain it. The Word "Fast" and it's english meaning should be clear, it's german meaning is somewhat close to the englisch term "nearly" which makes out of Fast Food the description "nearly - food" which comes pretty close to it's usual quality over here.

If they taste good, yes. :P

Maybe I'm weird, but I actually like fast food "chicken" better than real chicken.

Fun experience I had recently in Montreal. They have A&W up there. But it's very different from A&W in the US. They serve food to you in miniature deep fryer baskets!

Let me tell you - when it's 10:00 at night and you've skipped lunch, this stuff is ungodly awesome.

Well A&W here in Canada is different from the A&W in the US and has no relation to the US A&W so that's why it is different...

Speaking of A&W, I just ordered something from the First A&W store in Canada... Love the root beers :P A Spicy Mama Burger...

Hah! I love that stuff. I come across things that make me laugh in Japanese all the time, but only a few other people (other expats, the English teachers I work with) understand them. Unfortunately I can't think of anything right now...
