You're all Philistines for ignoring my Star Wars reference.

I ignored it because:

1) I had something else to say

2) You can't quote when posting from the mobile site

3) I didn't have a witty response

If I ruled the world, there would be no such thing as speeding tickets, but cops would routinely pull over and ticket anyone driving under the speed limit.

[sarcasm]

Why yes, I'm sure driving at 250km/h on a road only designed for travel at 100km/h is less dangerous or disruptive than driving at 70km/h on the same road. No, can't see why it taking over six times as much distance to stop would possibly matter.

I noticed it, I just didn't think comment was necessary. :P

Don't compare unequal extremes. Yes, on a 100 kph road, 250 is worse than 70. But whereas 70 is annoying and impedes the flow of traffic, 130 is probably not dangerous and doesn't have that problem.

Besides, if you're driving too fast and you kill yourself hitting a tree, I don't care, that's your problem. But if you are driving too slow in front of me, you are committing the single worst sin possible: getting in my way.

So, okay, let's revise my statement and say that people should only be pulled over for driving too fast if they are driving at a really outlandish speed - I don't care what the limit is, going 90-95 mph (145-153 kph) on a wide open straightaway in perfectly clear weather is not dangerous and should not be cause for getting a ticket just because bureaucracy/politics says you're not supposed to exceed 65, 70, or 75 (depending on the state).

A number on a sign is by no means an accurate indication of how fast it's safe to drive, even if it isn't made artificially low. It varies by driver, by vehicle, by weather, by amount of traffic, by time of day, from one section of the road to the next, etc.

Besides, speed limit enforcement has nothing to do with safety. It's about raising money. If anyone else did it, we'd call it robbery, but here it's "officially sanctioned".

That was weird, James

Mayor Bloombust shuts off the transit system. Now some people are trapped in the island...

Actually, the decision to shut down all the trains came from Albany (Governor Cuomo). Wasn't Bloomberg.

But yeah, it's probably overkill. Thing is, the city was blindsided by a blizzard the day after Christmas last year, and so Cuomo and Bloomberg are overpreparing this time around. That, and no one wants to be the next Bush after Katrina.

Relatively minor inconvenience is perfectly acceptable to try and reduce the effects of a major disaster.

Except Larks, when you look at it this way: What is more important getting somewhere on time? Or people's lives?

There's nothing open to get to on time during a hurricane anyway.

Uhm, would anyone mind telling me how to quote someone else in a thread? I seem to be unable to make it work. It's possible that I'm especially inept. That said, the numbering of reasons for not responding to aforementioned Star Wars quote was eye opening, and I will be sure to remember that the world does not revolve around me and that everyone has a life. That was said without a drop of sarcasm, although I realize that typing on the internet removes tone of voice and body language, allowing you to read something how you wish it to be read (or not wish but do subconsciously, I'm not sure quite how it works). Uh, anyways, we have another typhoon possibly heading towards us. So, let us know how that goes, East Coasters, and I'll be sure to let you know next weekend about ours!

There is a huge piece of a tree on our roof which has poked a couple small holes into the attic. And I do not expect to have power back at my house until at least later this week - the number of trees down and signals out around town is incredible. But, we're all safe, so, life goes on.

And the trains won't be running again yet tomorrow morning so, I get a spare day off from work out of all this.

And thus the cleanup? Glad to hear everyone is safe.

We have a typhoon heading towards us again. Looks like it'll head a little bit farther east than I am and hit Chiba on the other side of Tokyo from me. I wonder if it'll be another rain shower thing instead of a full-blown typhoon.

Also, thanks Jamesrules for showing me that!

I wouldn't like a repeat of last year up in Queensland. Flooding, flooding everywhere. And every time a cyclone hits banana prices go from about $2 per kg to around $15 per kg.

Advantages of smartphone: no power at house? Browse internet from phone!

Of course, cell service at my house is always spotty at best, so I'm currently in my car at a local park and ride lot (parked!) where I can get a strong signal.

I was very happy last week. I had my 20th birthday. I was too happy. Before that, I was angry and resentful. Now I am worried, too worried. That is all I can say now.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3
