CL&P says they expect to have most people back online by Saturday night but full restoration will take until Wednesday. We still don't have our power back at the house, of course.

It's also worth noting that the record for most people out at once in Connecticut, preveiously held by Hurricane Gloria in 1985... has not only been broken, it has been doubled.

Areas further away from the city have worse problems. New Jersey, which is known for being flood prone, has seen worse floods than any in recent memory. Rivers and streams overflowing in upstate New York and Vermont have washed out a lot of roads. Three historic covered bridges in Vermont are gone, and some towns are in fact now isolated as all (or, in many cases, merely both) roads out of town are no longer passable.

Metro-North has mostly returned to normal operation but the Port Jervis line will be out of commission north of Harriman for months as a huge section of it washed out.

Any flooding in the city of New York?

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I got my '03 Subaru Impreza wagon today. It's only got a 1.5L engine, but it feels like a rocket ship compared to the golf cart I was driving.

I hear the hurricane is going to be extremely costly despite being called overhyped.

New York City itself is not particularly prone to flooding since there aren't too many large streams. But plenty of flooding in outlying areas (especially New Jersey, where the joke is that the river floods if you spit in it).

A new page for my city journal is coming soon :)

"If you try to please everybody, you often times end up pleasing nobody, especially yourself. When somebody offers to do a favor for free, like making a mod for SimCity 4, you shouldn't be overly critical of something generously given to you. In other words, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth." - Twilight Sparkle after playing SimCity

"Being a mayor or a content creator for SimCity 4 is a heavy responsibility, Patrick. Each city and each custom content is like a child, and must be treated as such." - SpongeBob Squarepants after playing SimCity

"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible." - Frank Zappa

"The wisest men follow their own direction." - Euripides

Welcome to Fairview, my new city journal *:D

Our chimney got hit by lightning once. No router to fry in those days (this was 2002), but it did fry our computer's ethernet card.

Oh? I thought a lot of it seemed pretty close to sea level. I would have thought the Hudson rising a few metres would at least flood a bit of the city.

Flooding all over Japan right now thanks to the typhoon. It's mostly missing us here, and Tokyo will largely go unpunished as well, but west Japan (Osaka, Shikoku, etc) is being inundated.

Also, I love my car.

I think we're more prone to bushfires here.
