I have a question: is it considered "hate speech" to call a country "primitive"? I ask because I dismissively stated, "Indonesia is a primitive island nation so I am not surprised that its meat is subject to inhumane conditions." Upon hearing that, one person went on a rant on taking offense and another told me he thought what I said was "hate speech." I am very confused since the way I learned, primitive nation means developing nation in my book.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I thought 'primitive' means 'to not be advanced technologically'. I think someone could call it a hate speech if they (the speaker) meant that the people or their lifestyle is primitive.

If you were describing their conditions are unsanitary, I believe the term 'primitive' might not be the most suitible choice of word because it may be subject to misinterpretation.

I wouldn't consider it a hate speech unless you were to call Indonesians derrogatory names or say something that attacks their race, beliefs, traditions, lifestyle, etc. almost like what Eric Cartman says about Kyle in South Park.

"Primitive" has an insulting connotation and it's understandable that someone would take offense. Especially since this is a global site and we've definitely got a couple people from Indonesia here.

That said, I don't see how it's worth getting worked up over. Peeps need to chill.

I wouldn't call "primitive" hateful exactly, but like the others have said, it's not really used much. I think "developing" might be a little more acceptable, Furthermore, I wouldn't call Indonesia a "primitive island nation" in the first place. A 3rd world, developing country might be more accurate. Also, "nation" is usually used for a homogeneous population, while Indonesia's more diverse then that.

I'm back from the Philippines! I'm trying to restart my normal life here in Canada...

A 3rd world, developing country might be more accurate.

I think "Third World" might take up more serious offence... I'll take developing.

Sorry about the "3rd world" comment then, always figured that was still acceptable. Guess not. I can't follow political correctness very well.

Sorry about the "3rd world" comment then

Why? Because someone said it might be offensive to some undefined person? Yeesh.

See, I don't do this. If someone is offended by something I say, that is their problem, not mine. I stand by my remarks and do not apologize for them.

I love how we say "developing" instead of "undeveloped" as if to imply that the situation is improving, even if it isn't. Ah, political correctness... :whatevs:

Looking at HDI data, for most countries the situation is improving. Slowly.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

We bought a tiny little fake tree a week or two ago, but they measure things in centimeters here and the number means nothing to me. It resembles the tree from the old Peanuts Christmas Special an awful lot.

Yeah, the approximately 2.5cm=1" thing I got, but it's difficult to go backwards. I guess I'll have to keep the approximately 30cm=1' in mind for that from now on. *sigh* The math to do that is so easy, but I didn't really notice it until you pointed that out. Therefore, a sincere, non-sarcastic thanks for the help, Duke! :D

I'm not even sure if I have a tree. Not that I'd feel like putting it up if I did.

My parents have a fake tree with built in lights. Which is convenient, except that the bulbs use non-standard sockets, so all our electric ornaments don't work with it.

My mother and I put up our gilded Christmas tree this past weekend. It is covered with gold ribbon and gold ornaments. It is also artificial so it can hold all the heavy ornaments. We actually have spare ornaments that could not easily fit on the Christmas tree though I tried to fit a few extra on the back (facing the wall).
