The foundation upon which Detroit is built is quite poor, schools are awful (graduation rates regularly below 25%), there are not enough policemen and fire fighters, and emergency calls go hours before they are answered. City council is full of idiots and the mayor's office has not been any better. I'm not hopeful for the future of the city, however much I want it to succeed.

The issue with the soil probably wouldn't be lack of nutrients - years of not being farmed has given them time to replenish, after all. The issue would be if it's contaminated and if that contamination would make crops grown there not fit to eat.

Even that might not be as much of a problem as you'd think, though. Field crops don't have deep root systems and something like a leaking underground storage tank (environmental engineers abbreviate this as "LUST" - I kid you not) would certainly get to the groundwater but might not necessarily get to vegetation on the surface.

Well when your a mayor and your last name has "Kill" in it, It is not the best idea to get yourself accused of murder.

Well, his last name had "Kil" at the front, but let's not dirty ourselves over spelling. There was a thing a few years ago when a councilwoman named Monica Conyers called a leader on the council "Shrek" and then when a bunch of junior high schoolers visiting Detroit city hall called her out on it she got mad and defensive and just looked really, really bad. Apparently, she's in the middle of a three year sentence concerning corruption charges. This was the same group of people who refused turned down a deal for the rennovation of Cobo Hall, where the North American International Auto Show is, because one of the stipulations for it (which needed it in the worst way, leaky roof, broken facilities, all kinds of problems) was that management would be shared or transferred (I can't remember any more) to an outside group, losing them prestige and power and probably another bargaining chip for under the table deals. They eventually took a modified form of the deal and the NAIAS will stay in Downtown Detroit.

Downtown Detroit is interesting. There used to be a massive abandoned skyscraper (someone posted a thread with pictures from inside here years ago), but it's since been spruced up and is now inhabited. Progress, I guess, but that makes it less cool.

I had previously thought the GM Logo on top of the Ren Cen was static, but it's actually an LED that goes back and forth between various GM logos on a normal day and sometimes turns into the Tigers logo during games. They even changed the lights up top from blue to orange after the Tigers won the game I was at. That's pretty neat!

Another odd observation about the Tigers game is that there seemed to be just as many women in the crowd as men, and most of them were young women not there with kids. I suppose this reflects the fact that in Michigan there is a very pervasive sports culture... but in most places in the US, men typically outnumber women at sporting events by a significant margin. Especially football games.

Then you have the People Mover, which my father likened to the magic trolley from Mister Rodgers' Neighborhood. Driving or walking around downtown it seems to randomly pop out all over the place and you never know where it will show up next!

It also takes only 15 minutes to ride it in a complete circle. Fastest clinch of an entire transit system I've ever had!

Ah yes Monica Conyers, Wife of congressman John Conyers Jr. of dearborn, the 3rd longest tenured congressman behind fellow MI congressman Dingell and fellow corrupt congressman Charlie Rangel.

How is she doing lately? Still enjoying life in her posh ritzy "prison" cell for famous people? Martha Steward enjoyed her time there as well.

Theres more, Representing Flint, you got Congressman Dale Kildee, apart from looking like a creepy mime, he has been accused of some really sick things.

Not to mention 83 years old and first elected to congress in 1977.

An alarm went off across the entire campus today towards the end of a class I was late for (so I never showed up) then Integral Calculus was cancelled. Good thing I am wearing my new ski jacket and big headphones.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

One could argue your school wanted to make sure everyone was prepared in situations like fires in the middle of the night, but doing it at a time that robs people of sleep sounds stupid..

Aw dang, the baseball thread, I forgot about that. I'll take my tears there from now on. Anyways, a question for you all:

Why would the owners of basic BMWs (323i, 530i, etc) put an M badge on their car? The only people who would know what it means (like me) will know right away that their badge is writing a check it cannot possibly cash, and the idiots who would be impressed by such a thing would not have any idea why they're supposed to be impressed in the first place.

On the topic of Detroit:

I'm sure most of you have seen this website, but if you haven't, I encourage you to see it. Some interesting photography here on the urban decay.

On BMW's:

I have no clue why people are slapping M badges on any of them. Then again, I don't know much on it, driving a 2001 Trailblazer.

Write any word often enough and its spelling starts to look odd.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
