I know I haven't for a while.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Just watched Deep Impact, which is one of the best, if not the best, disaster movies I've seen. The only problem I have with it is that when I ran the impact of the Biederman fragment through the Earth Impact Effects Program [link], there was also an air blast which would have shattered windows and blown down some of the smaller trees in the NYC area; also, they seemed to have exaggerated the size of the wave in the film. Assuming that the fragment with a 2400 meter diameter was mostly composed of ice, giving it an approximate density of 1000 kg/m3, and an impact angle of no more than 30 degrees, along with an ocean depth of around 3 km (the impact was between Cape Hatteras and Bermuda), when the wave reached New York City it wouldn't have been any taller than 111 meters; far too little to overwhelm every single building except the World Trade Center towers, which were the only ones to not be drowned in the film. In order for that impactor to have created a wave close to the size in the film, it would have had to be an iron asteroid (which, if it had impacted under the same conditions as the Biederman fragment, and was the same size, would have created a wave of around 287 meters - but then the asteroid would create a whole bunch of other complications, such as damage caused by the emitted heat from the fireball; the ice comet was too small to create thermal damage at the distance it impacted from NYC).

Anyways, besides that minor gripe about the missing air blast and exaggerated megatsunami, I'm perfectly fine with the film's impact science. :)

I can dig it.

On a different note, I just checked out Hatsune Miku, some kind of all-anime "virtual idol" here in Japan that a lot of my students (elementary and jr. high schoolers) have talked about all year. It's horrifying. I can't unsee it.

Creepy fanboyism aside, Vocaloid is a pretty impressive program. Capable of producing music that actually sounds good, including vocals, 100% artificially. Not a small feat. Though, made feasible by the fact that the Japanese language is far simpler phonetically than English, or any western language for that matter.

The program is indeed impressive, and I have heard that the 3D "concerts" are also quite a sight. But the "singing" does sound an awful lot like Lil Wayne was the producer and autotuned the hell out of it. I guess it sells records though, right? Not to me, though, I'm a 31 y/o white dude from the Midwest, not exactly the target audience.

It's really cold for some reason this morning. Only about 43 °F and feels like 37°. Winter and spring must be fighting, though summer is winning for some reason; It's been abnormally warm this month.

Not that I'm complaining.

If it's too cold, would you prefer the same numbers but in Celsius? :P
