canuck3360: Hey, that's cool. I should probably finish the two BATs I have going right now anyway before starting something new.

OK, so I haven't gotten Borders set up as a ploppable yet. But in its stead, I offer you this:

BURTON TOWER, REDUX

BurtonTower5.jpg

Since this is a landmark, once I get it textured it'll be up on the STEX quick! 19.gif

I hope I don't burst your bubble nofunk...landmark lots although they're aesthetically pleasing, don't add to much to the game and have a tendency to not be d/l'ed that much. You might consider making a second lot with fuctionality, perhaps as a museum, library, perhaps even a water tower.

The real Burton Memorial Tower is a high-rise tower housing University of Michigan faculty offices and a magnificent 67-bell grand carillon - one of only a handful left in the world. So this building has several possibilities. Ploppable commercial (to represent the office facet), museum (considering its significance to the world of carillon music), park (for the effect) or landmark.

The BAT, by the way, looks awesome. I used to live within sight of this building and seeing it brings back a lot of fond memories of hearing the carillon peal at odd hours of the day. Might want to look into a custom sound effect of bell music for the query, now that I think about it. 4.gif Can't wait to see the finished product.

Nofunk... It looks just as good over here as it does in your thread!!!!  2.gif

I haven't updated on Yost for a while, so I figured I should do that.  I had to put it aside for a bit just because it's getting so big.  It's getting a little harder to keep everything straight even with two pages of scribbled notes and figures.  Plus preview renders are getting pretty slow.  The latest news is that I got the back side on.  Still a lot of details to add... there are a lot of mechanics, or former mechanic "outlets" on this side that I need to do... but this is the general idea:

    yostbackpreview01rk7.jpg

The lower windows need to be adjusted, I also need to make the texture for the overhead door.  The only problem I'm seeing is that there seems to be too much bare wall on either side of the main wall.  The corner pieces match up like they should, but I think my large window spacing may be off a little or something.  For Jason... the maximum brick height is now 39 meters, BTW, to go along with what ever length I told you before.  I may need to scale the peak up, but we'll see when the roof is on.

Which brings me to this:  Does anyone know what the roof does?  Is it a pitched roof all the way to the edge?  Or does it flatten out on each side the way the walls make it look like it does?  I'm trying to find a clear overhead shot, but can't really tell yet.

Anyway... for fun here is a shot of the entire thing as of right now.  This is a medium quality on Zoom 4... but it gives you an idea of just how big this place really is!

    yostfullz4previewrb1.jpg

    JB

Edit:  Nevermind the roof question.  I found a picture good enough to at least show me that it flattens out along the edges.  It wasn't clear enough for roof junk and such, though... so if anyone has access to that type of info it would be most helpful.

Looks like some excellent progress going on here. I especially like what I see coming out of the Penobscot Building. Inspiring me to get my own act back in order!

Wow, no activity since 9/11? Has BSP fallen back into a lull? 41.gif

Hey, do any of you have good photos of the base of Cadillac Tower? I've got plenty of detail of the upper floors and roof detail, but have got virtually nothing for the base. Let me know if you can help a brother out!

The top one would be best if you ask me. It just looks more natural to have the icon show the top of the building.

Ooh. I like the one just below the default. Very representative of the tower.

Yeah, I was thinking the top too, but I wanted to see what everyone thought.

I've gotten reference photos for the Vinton Building's alley, so I've started on that.  Here's what I posted in my thread about it:

    vintonprev4wh0.jpg

I started on the alley.  There's a fire escape covering the 3rd and 4th window (from the left) on each floor.  Some of the windows are bricked in in such a way that they seems to block the fire escape.  But the most right column of windows is guessed, and so is the right half of the roof.  It wasn't possible to get a picture of those parts because of the angle, the fire escape covered those areas.

Oh yeah, those panels on the other side that look like cement from far away are actually granite.

My wireless mouse is low on juice (I haven't recharged it in a while), so I don't know if I'll get much more work done tonight.

Holy crap! How did I miss this?! Jason that looks awesome. I mean, they both look awesome.

I'd go with the top one, though.

You have no idea how much I appreciate the help!! 29.gif

P.S. Vinton is also looking amazing. Strange that they bricked the windows.

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense.  They might get unbricked for the future though, but I want to get this done! lol

    vintonprev5fz6.jpg

Well I've worked on the Vinton Building today.  I did the fire escape, and did a big overhaul on the side's texture.  I think the reinforced concrete adds a bit of realism to the game.  Does everything look ok?

I plan on removing the bottom two cement bands on the texture, they shouldn't really be there.

No, it does most definitely not look ok. 20.gif

It looks freaking awesome! 25.gif Not that I would have expected anything else...

Yeah... I guess it does look pretty good at that. Not to mention "freaking awesome" among other things. You're right, it's kind of strange that the fire excapes lead nowhere for half the floors.

BTW... I found a very little blurb about the construction of the Vinton if you're interested. Kind of the same idea as what we used for the Freep Building's query. There's also a picture, although not a real good one.

    It's looking wonderful Jason.

Just a note, while it does initially seem odd that some of the windows with a fire escape are bricked in, most modern building codes, at least in the U.S., no longer allow such exterior stairs on buildings of this size to be counted towards a building's required provision of protected fire stairs. Instead, given the use and occupancy of the building, the codes will require a number of protected stairways whose construction and materials will withstand against fire for a specified number of rated hours.

Most modern buildings are constructed from the start with these fire stairs in mind, thus making exterior fire escape assemblies legally unnecessary. Older buildings built before modern codes must be extensively renovated to install new rated fire stairs, usually by reorganizing interior space to accomodate and construct a new stairwell, or sometimes by building a new enclosed stairwell structure along a side of the building. The metal exterior fire escape, a favorite feature of older buildings, can then be saved for looks, completely removed, or even compromised with blocked windows as interior spaces are rearranged, without necessarily undermining the building's code compliance.

Hey guys! If you haven't visited my BAT thread recently, I've started work on Cadillac Tower! I don't have much yet, but honestly, once I get the detailing done on the first floor and just above it, the rest of the building is, more or less, 37 floors of the same flippin' window! (Of course, the roof has lots of details, too.)

Here's what I've got so far:

    cadil3a.jpg

I've got one question, though: does anybody know what the left wall looks like? Are there doors, other details? I've only been able to find pictures of the front, back and right walls! I assume it's a clone of the right wall, but just want to be sure.

    Hope everyone's doing well!
