I saw the Amazing Spiderman 2 today.  It was good, but I can see why people don't like it.   Electro looked nothing like he did in the comics, and the plot was kind of confusing.  Other than that, I like it.

I've recently watched the Amazing Spider man 2 too. I enjoyed it, I didn't find the plot to be that complicated.

 

Other movies that I've really enjoyed are the first Hangover (the 2nd one and 3rd one were kind of disappointing), of course the Bond movies (can't remember their exact names), mission impossible 4. and other ones that I can't remember.

Recently watched The Gathering Storm with Albert Finney and Lynn Redgrave.  The makeup was good, but only an artist's concept and not very well taken from the record for Churchill.  Ended with Winston's becoming First Lord of the Admiralty.  The rest is history.

I know this is late in asking, but what did y'all think of Oblivion?

 

I rather liked it, and it some nice plot twists that were actually unexpected (I was leaning in a different direction until the reveal(s)). Haven't seen too many other movies lately. I don't have a car to rent DVDs (while I'm at school) and I refuse to pay the $10+ to sit in a small-screen AMC theater. The theater I used to go to was one of the old-fashioned anamorphic widescreens; they sold out in the housing boom (rather than go out of business due to bankruptcy) but they also happened to cost $4 for a second-run triple feature (so after all the mainstream theaters had been running the shows for a couple months). I think I watched Harry-Potter, some drama film, and a romance all in the same evening once. Harry Potter sticks out because I was 9 or 10 at the time; I enjoyed the other films, but of course I don't remember their names. Darn I miss that theater...

 

I also saw The Matrix recently, and despite the fact that everyone talks about how great it is (and the fact that the biggest reveal I already knew) there was still unspoiled stuff, and I was delightfully surprised. Obviously there are a few plot holes, but overall it was a very enjoyable movie, and definitely something I wouldn't mind watching again. If the sequels are really so bad (I haven't seen the of course) someone should buy the rights and sit down with the creators and rewrite the darn things. It's not like anyone considers the sequels canon anyways (and who'd mourn their retcon?)

A paint by the numbers sci-fi tripe is what I thought of it.  Cruise didn't help the film any.

 

Just took a peek at this weekends estimates and it looks like a bunch of neighbors laid the smackdown on Spidey and sent him tumbling to a 60% drop from last weeks opening.  Ouch.  ASM will struggle to top $225M domestically.  The way Sony and Fox are pumping out their Marvel properties, sooner or later the returns will take a nosedive and eventually, the rights will revert to Marvel, where they belong.

 

Oh, by the way, the big lizard finally stomps his way into theaters on Friday.  Soooo looking forward to that one.

I don't read critics reviews for the simple fact their opinions on anything in film matters not, good or bad.  They're nothing more than paid hacks.

Any suggestion for a good movie? I heard Rotten Tomatoes is a good site but honestly sometimes I don't agree with their critics especially when it comes to independent films.

 

I recently watched Miracle on Cell #7. God, what a great and touching movie, the plot line: topnotch, acting: topnotch, everything else: topnotch. I am not critic so I don't know the criteria but I definitely recommend you guys watch it.

It was actually less squicky and surprisingly quite, uh, endearingly heartwarming (!?!?!).  If a zombie can get himself a girl, there's hope for the rest of us blokes yet!  Then again, the zombie had to be handsome and dreamy (!?!?!), otherwise all the standard Rules of Attraction could not apply.

 

I'm no great fan of zombie movies and had originally avoided this one when it first came out as I figured it would be the typical snarkily ironic gore, but I think I would actually rank this smiler better than the more blatant parody "Shaun of the Dead."

Most recently I watched Keanu Reeves' 47 Ronin.  We made it 15 minutes in before we couldn't take it anymore.  That was bad.  A movie like that where you're relying on mystical spectacle to propel the story should at least look like fun. This looked like they were filming it at gunpoint.  In North Korea.  Although that would explain how un-Japanese it looked.

Before that, we watched Satoshi Kon's Paprika and Perfect Blue.  Paprika was an awesome, creepy concept in search of a better antagonist and ending (god, anime endings are SO BAD) and Perfect Blue was everything Paprika wished it would be, as well as the basis for Black Swan (which pretty much just rips off the movie wholesale, but it's okay because Darren Aronofsky bought the rights to it).  Perfect Blue ranks up there with Akira on my (admittedly limited and short) list of "anime worth watching."

Trying to interpret medieval Japanese legend to a general modern audience must be impossible.  The audience just wouldn't have the background of the formalized Japanese system of manners and violence. 47 Ronin is such a terrible story of revenge I don't think the "now generation" has a hope of appreciating it.

I thought it was dreary too and preferred the older, more traditionally set and staged Chuushingura versions.  I like Keanu Reeves, though he can be quite awful at times, but I did not see why story wise his character even needed to be in this movie.  Yeah, yeah, Hollywood studio bundle packaging...  I've liked Hiroyuki Sanada ever since seeing him in Sonny Chiba's chop-schlocky cult flicks "Shogun's Samurai" and "Shogun's Ninja"...if Hollywood was going to twist a traditional legend, they perhaps should have twisted it into something more like those two, which played wacky tricks with real history, rather than twisting 47 Ronin into a Planet Mongo wannabe.
 
Amusingly, while the U.S. advertisements featured Keanu front and center, Japanese advertisements that fans posted online often had bad boy boy-bander Akanishi Jin also at the fore.  His character in the movie was so surprisingly and laughably minor, meanwhile, his post-KAT-TUN solo career as a hip-hop artist is in tabloid ashes.  But, I am forgiving ever since watching the noisily fun "Cartoon KAT-TUN"...they should have dropped Keanu, kept Hiroyuki Sanada as the new Sonny Chiba-like mentor, and recast Akanishi Jin as the hero ronin doomed to commit blood-soaking seppuku under the cherry blossoms.

I did order the UK English-subtitled version of "Rengou Kantai Shirei Choukan: Yamamoto Isoroku -- Taiheiyou Sensou Nanajuunenme no Shinjitsu" (「聯合艦隊司令長官 山本五十六 -太平洋戦争70年目の真実-」), a mouthful that would be in English something like "Combined Fleet Commander-in-Chief :  Yamamoto Isoroku -- The Pacific War 70-Year Truth."  Obviously, it's a wartime biography about a certain infamous admiral and is heavily condensed and edited for melodramatic and revisionist effect, but it's fascinating to watch this version of the admiral argue against the Imperial militarists yet still patriotically oversee a hopeless war.  Better yet, it has imperial Japanese battleships with pagoda masts steaming in formation through the stormy North Pacific and Zeroes launching from CGI carriers!  Gosh, I hope I can go down as stoically and romantically as the admiral in his Betty does at Bougainville in this flick.  I actually ordered this specifically to give to a friend who likes such history.

Saturday afternoon at the Movies.  This week: The Monuments Men

 

Riveting.  Of course I happen to like WW II movies if they are any good.  This one was released in February 2014 and is a George Clooney opus.  Much as I hate to say it, George, Kate Blanchet was the best actor in the film.  The rest of the actors turned in good ensemble performances.  Someday the men in this film may come up to Ms. Blanchet's level.  Vive le difference!

I agree with you. I'm not saying it was bad, but I really have no clue what all the fuzz is about. A typical example of an overrated movie.

I thought it was good, but I prefer Chris Pratt as the happy-go-lucky characters Andy on Parks and Rec and Emmet in The Lego Movie than as the tough guy space hero, Star-Lord. And even though he can only say three words, I like Groot the best.
