I just love the amount of custom content you put into work here, plus the amazing eye for detail I can't praise enough in your sceneries...

Well what better thing to do on a 30°C (86F) sunny sunday afternoon than finishing basic work on my small downtown airport (clickclock for full size):

dwntwn_nc_ap.jpg

EDIT: now the airport feels complete as I added a fuel depot to the west and a fire station to the east of the field.

... just 2 of over 10 lots I made for this airport... lot editor galore ^^

desert mod? yes... sort of... chihuahuan desert terrain mod.

middle eastern? no way.

a fictional setting inspired by the southwestern us.

I spy a desert mod there? Do you run a middle eastern city?

You know there's desert outside of the middle east, right? :D

Nice airport, GMT. I like the control tower, what is it?

nope don't get your hopes high my fellow barcelona-fan. no middle eastern themed anything from this guy here ^^

and art, it's a relotted version of the ATCT seen in xannepan's airport pack iirc

EDIT: I just took a closer look at your last 2 airports and I wonder what ATCTs did you use on Kamiyama and Sado?

also in this picture, I find something to worry about:

tzmthq.jpg

the smokestack on the far right is too close and high to my likings. The terrain is challenging enough already, no need to make it a pilot's nightmare :D

aaaaand edit 2:

Not much has changed but I've added another custom lot to the airport. maybe, if you find it, I'll give you a pre-owned cookie... maybe...

Great work! It has been a long time since I've seen those terminals on the first picture for the last time.

Indeed, haven't seen those terminals for years now, nor have I used them. :) I like the old version better to be honest, but that's just because I like small airports. :) But the new one is nicely done too.

GMT - I'll move the smockstack. Now that you mention it, it does look too dangerous here. The ATCT of Kamiyama is a custom building I've created, and the ATCT of Sado is just maxis small control tower. :)

This is still a WIP but what do you think? Obviously it still needs an ATCT but other than that it seems pretty much finished. I wasn't going for the hyper realistic airport, just one that had a suitably long runway (small planes only) with a somewhat appealing look. I think I might look into adding a second runway, because all those planes would be parked there half the time :P

In the city it is located just south of Parliament House/Hill nestled in the suburbs of the big city to the right of the picture.

Its 'official' name is Castlemaine International Airport with the codes CIA ( :P ) and ICIA.

There's three things I'd change right away:

1) the tunnel. make it start at one end and keep it underground to the other end of the runway instead of popping in and out the ground... with all the bumps it looks weird ^^

2) lower right corner of the terminal ends too close to the taxiway, give one or two tiles room. even small aircraft have quite a wingspan and with the taxiway junction and related turning... better safe than replacing windows and wingtips ;-)

3) same for the cargo boxes at the far end of the runway.

other than that, even for a not-so-realistic project quite a nice airport. In fact, good enough that, with only little work, you can turn it into a realistic airport!

And Drack: yes you found it. the checkerboard. Ima find you an old cookie under the sofa... might have some stains from my cat licking at it but hey, saves you the milk-dipping

Gonna disagree on this one.  It's much, much cheaper to build stretches of road in a ditch rather than a tunnel.  Building a mile-long tunnel like that would be too expensive for a little airport service road.  If realism is the goal.

If I were a pilot and the wind or a malfunctioning took me out of the runway, I would try to head to the taxiway side (given that at the other side there's water). If the road was on a tunnel, we would land on the grass first, later on the runway. If the road were as it is now, we would finish in a trench, and the damages would be much higher. Making that road on a tunnel looks to me the safest option.

I would ditch the road anyway. I don't see why there are warehouse right over the runway, on a a reclaimed land runway that is. Doesn't make sense to me.

Some detail of ops at Queen Charlotte International...

One of the 6 remaining B717-200's in service with Phoenix Airlines between a Titan and a Phoenix B738

Titan is the world's second largest operator of the Boeing 747-8i (after Lufthansa) with 18 in service...

Caledonian also operate the B748, using it on long-haul routes to Europe and Asia

If realism was the goal, this tunnel-chain wouldn't be there in the first place because it would be cheaper and more logical concerning regulations to put the cargo terminal at a more accessible place somewhere near the terminal.

Also think about what happens if an aircraft strays off the runway due to a malfunction, hitting one of these tunnel-entrance bumps or worse, a cargo truck full of dangerous/hazardous goods. worst case scenario would be a full b737/a320 tunring into a homo sapiens bbq... a worst case scenario that could easily be avoided in this particular case.

Well after carefully considering everyone's very helpful input, I went with what seemed to be the general consensus and sort of my feelings too, to completely take out the cargo area, eliminating the need for a tunnel chain, satisfying you guys and those pilots ;)

looking good there durf... mind sharing another closeup of the terminal area?

speaking of it, maybe you can reestablish a cargo terminal somwhere to the left of the hangar area?

Here is my newest, and probably best airport I ever built. It is definitely not as good as other airports on SImtropolis, but it is the best I built so far.

Anyways, this is the Powhatan International Airport, the largest airport in Powhatan Island (you can see further information on this airport in my CJ -- see the link to the CJ in my signature block).

Regional Airport for a small city of mine: (sorry about the grid)

regional_airport.png

I've never had any luck with getting the old concrete runways from RMIPv1 to work. They never showed up in the airports menu for me. I've downloaded it several times over the past few years - just to try again.

Anyone been able to get them to work recently or can point me in the direction of some other alternatives - even some custom lotting? Killing me that I can't make a realistic airport for something bigger than a 737/A320.

I hope these will help - runway extenders from BriPizza.net. They act like overlays that widen the runway to 4 tiles from 2. It's much more realistic to land a widebody on.

http://www.bripizza.net/sc4/201311RW4x/201311RW4x.html

As you can see in the picture, the new lots function seamlessly with the current runway textures. The new lots overhang slightly; lay these down and then plop the half runway pieces (or taxiway exits) to either side and voila!

Lovely airport but I don't think the aviation office is going to allow any tall building of that height to be beside the airport. :P
