few points..

I thought the render you did of Timpson row was great, even back then..bricks do not always have to match up..much like in real life, but you are free to do as you wish and if feel that re-batting it is the best way then by all means do so :)

Yes, such NYC themed street mod would be great and once Girafe publishes those props I do wonder if uncle T Wrecks might knock together a little mod and share it as I'm terrible at modding.

As for me mentioning the trees, what I was alluding to is would you release the trees, as they are as a prop pack. I would really like to use them on my lots and we can always use more next gen tree props to go with Simfoxes and Girafes, even if it's one or two trees.

    Franklin Apartments

Here's another update on the building, the skylight and the extra pipe line on the roof comes from a dear friend of mine, Francis90b.  He's the guy that make me try to look closely at the roof objects, but it can be hard to tell what is what. :D

I love these buildings.  Every one of them.

Question:  I use the buildingplop cheat a lot, and I can't ever find them...any idea what file name they appear under?

Whatever it was Franis90b said to you that makes you not want to release the tower version, I don't agree with it. It's just too good to shelf.

    Aronic Place

Here's the tower version, I may not release it do to what Franis90b said to me months ago.

Wait...what i've told months ago was, to look at the bulk and massing rules contained within the zoning regulations that were in place when that building was built.

The existing building looks like it could have been built anytime from 50's to 70s, and in 1961 New York switched to a new set of zoning rules that mostly abandoned the rigid bulk and massing rules that forced most of pre-1961 buildings as "wedding cake" masses, rising from the ground then tapering in a series of setbacks.

According to pre 1961 rules, the tower portion of "aronic place" could not have been built in the way in which you've designed it (should someone ask for it,i can provide all the details that led me to that conclusion) - but perhaps post-1961 rules were in most cases more flexible.

This building could be modified, and do well, as a 1950's wedding cake (or partly wedding cake), tower building (still affected by pre 1961 rules) or as a bulky, straight 1970's tower (built after 1961 new zoning codes)...

...all you need to do is simply to look at the rules (pick just what you need to know, for Lord's sake!), and decide which way to go....you may have many alternatives, and all of them would fit with a specific moment of Nyc evolution...not knowing the rules would likely lead you to a result that "somehow" imitates "NYC" "style(s)", without ever coming close to any of them - turning out to be just  a shallow mock up.

I would digress here, and state that among the things i really like in buildings there are the dumbbell shapes of 1880-1900 NYC tenements, prewar chicago towers (bulkier, shorter and less wedding-cake than NYC ones), and the Philly prewar downtown buildings shaped by the conflict between desire for height and the desire not to surpass william penn's statue atop the city hall...Many things we might find interesting IRL were not shaped by lack of rules, and unlimited possibilities unleashed in this way, but by strict and specific limitations peculiar to place to place, and by people's way to cope with them.

Knowing what thoser rules were, what they dictated and why, allows someone who would like to "design" a building model from scratch (or modify an existing one) to add another layer to his creation - probably adding elements no designer (RL architect or internet BATer) could have ever thought about, weren't it for some "pesky", "irrelevant" rules which forced him to do so....

I have no idea what Francis said (where is he anyway?). All I can say is that the only problem I see with the tower version is that the podium doesn't look right somehow. Now don't get me wrong: The modeling job per se is awesome as usual. There's something about the overall architecture that rubs me the wrong way, although I can't put my finger on it. The upper two thirds of the tall part as a tower section might work, but not in combination with the current base. I'm sure you could turn it into a BAT the way it is now, and hundreds of people would gladly download it, but I still think it would look somewhat awkward.

    EDIT

So there you are, Francis! Do you have to come out from under the rock you've been hiding just to cross-post with me? OK everybody, so my post is probably obsolete now - I only saw Francis' reply after I submitted my post.

throwing in my 2 cents worth... I also like the tower... what I think could resolve the 'awkwardness' of it can be resolved through more progress... I think it will depend on its street appearance, where its entry is and some how make for a 'transition' with the tower...

also one could say 'a fictional interpretation' and have the the tower act as an addition... and as we all know additions don't always jive with existing... and I also think there is a great amount of latitude in modeling here as SC4 cities isn't Manhattan nor does the sims use the precise application of the Manhattan building codes... where in lies that 'latitude' of interpretation by the modeller to arrive at, for a workable, build-able, as close to historical as need wanted and all function right for the game...

I think SG has enough senibiltity to resolve the issues of street awkwardness and other concerns for a great model that will populate many sims cities everywhere... so, AG got a rabbit to pull out of the hat?
