Ive thought about this very concept and ,playing the cities xl demo was on a par with playing sims 3 for me. Actually sims 3 gives you the ability to design your own buildings in simple form, it's awesome, but limited to the size. Imagine the processor you would need to play a City game that was the size of Cities Xl with the abilities of sims3, even sims 3 slows down as you add more households so....mmmm dreams.

I'll bet there are multiple lot sizes in The Sims 3. 3.gif Heck, even The Sims 2 had multiple lot sizes, and it's not even a city-building game!! And it's obvious when I play The Sims 2, that my poor sims cannot afford larger houses, and..... you get the point.

What were Monte Cristo thinking? Isn't this supposed to be a 'next generation modern realistic city builder game'?

I suppose, and to be honest, it's too bad. If MC is actually having financial trouble, then maybe working with a larger company like EA could possibly be helpful... I don't nessicarily mean for MC get bought by EA.

Just imagine how powerful a person's computer would have to be...simultaneously running thousands, perhaps even millions of sims...maybe even having buildings change over the sims life. But it would be really cool if you could live in a skyscraper. One could ave a really urban life.

Saw below Steam has unlocked the game for some.   Wondering if the final cut has any sound effects such as traffic, cars, people, birds, you know city sounds.... or is it still just music you hear?

I just saw on the steam CXL page it says "EXCLUSIVE STEAM ITEM The magnificent Royce Hall from the UCLA campus." now I really wish I waited 2 days to preorder until it came on Steam...

EDIT: I also see this on D2D "The Woolworth Building is exclusively available to Direct2Drive clients purchasing either Standard or Limited Editions."

So what exclusive item do we who bought it off the citiesxl.com website get? And is there any way for us to get these?

Seems abit silly theres no preorder bonus for those who bought it direct. I got it from Play.com so will get an 'exclusive Nelson's Column code'

I have two harbors available for construction. Both structures look identical, and they share the same name ("Harbor").

Harbor [1]

Construction cost - 5000

Max monthly cost - 500

Passengers - 40

Freight - 40

Employs - unqualified workers and qualified workers

Available from beginning of game

Harbor [2]

Construction cost - 1000000

Max monthly cost - 5000

Passengers - ZERO

Freight - 40

Employs - unqualified workers, qualified workers, and elites

Unlocks at population of 20000

These are the only differences that I have been able to identify. Can anyone explain to me why I would ever want to build Harbor [2]?

1) Who consumes retail, I got a city with over 250k people and people are unhappy that they do not have 'shopping', but commercial zones go bankrupt because retail is red and they don't make a profit (everything else is green). Commercial zones are in the middle of residential zones.

2) Entertainment and education. There is whining that the city is boring and people are retarded, but even though I spend a lot of my budget on various entertainment and schooling structures, the situation doesn't improve. What's the problem here? Does it matter how close these building are and what the types are? What is the most effective way of building them?

3) Any way of making a sustainable society that doesn't depend on having loads of heavy industry in the town? Can be partially circumvented by farming I guess but that locks out manufacturing and hi-tech. And offices seem to love hi-tech.

In one of the later releases of the demo people actually were present on the lots, now I see no people on lots.   How can they cut that out of the final release?   Also how do you build a GEM?

If this is true, i'm going to go over to France, go to Monte Cristo's Studio and kiss all of the developers of Cities XL, I will hug and kiss them until their shifts end...

/end sarcasm, I will actually not panic....

Folks ingame: Too low details level

"build GEM": You can't build GEMs... GEMs will be small expantion packs that brings a new game into the game., the Ski GEM for example will allow you to manage a ski ressort and all that comes with it, designing your ski tracks on the mountains, placing telesieges, ... Seen from your city, it will just look like some new bats, but you'll be able to switch to the GEM just like going from city mode and avatar mode... When you're in GEM mode, your city will not evolve, just like if you were offline... Only your ski ressort will evolve while in Ski Gem Mode...

Officially announced GEMs are yet Ski ressort and Beach, the game manual refers to a "Car building firm" gem as an exemple when explaining GEMs, and some other eventual future GEMs are hinted into the game data files (Airport for example).

Game datas also suggests a gem for busses, a gem for trains, a gem for subways... but based on what we yet know (Mass transit for PO subscribers only, GEMs ok for single player mode AND online mode), it could be just the way the game works with it, so it does not necessarly mean that mass transit will be published as GEMs, as it would make MC's posts about "no MT in SP" wrong. Anyway, whatever their plan is, they may change it with time.

So basically, GEMs are "tycoon games" inside your city builder. and the way you succeed in these tycoon games can improve your city wealth, and I guess the opposite (city influing success of Ski ressorts / beaches / airports / whatever) is also true.

They look very promising on the paper and I think the concept is good, but after all things that happened recently around this game, I'll switch to "Wait and see" mode before giving a definitive opinion.

I would avoid GameStop's Digital store as the download is extremely slow and it took them 14 hours to send the email with the code and download link.

I have never used Steam or D2D, but I have heard that they are both good and have fast downloads. But don't take my word for it as I have never experienced either first hand. I myself wish I would have done a little research before going with GameStop as I'm deeply regretting it.

bought the game from 2 differnet places, waiting on a refund from one.

Do not buy the game from Citiesxl.com unless you want to wait 9-12 hours for the download.(This is where I'm waiting for a refund).

I then baught it for Direct2drive and had the download completed in 1 hour.

Hope this helps.
