So, what are those points for?

I didn't read all of the last page, so I don't know if someone already mentioned this... but perhaps a monetary donation will earn some number of points. My point total is equal to my forum post number plus 2. I have one cj and no uploads to the STEX. The only other contribution I have made is a donation. If not that, where did my last point come from?

I have 1142 at the time of this post yet on 432 posts.

that leaves 610 points left.

Heres the interesting part:

uploads are rated:

4.64

4.75

4.91

4.29

4.13

That adds up to about 22.72.

subtract 22.72 from 610 and we get 587.28.

Take my number of downloads: 2939, divide it by my number of uploads: 5.

What do you get?

587.8

Coincidence?

@masochist and warrior: I agree that this sort of system can start a "war", I think that whether it will or not depends on the maturity level of the participants. When Dirk implemented a similar system on Sporeum there was a lot of friendly competition, but only one incident of nastiness where someone tried to "play" the system in three years.

@kryptowhite: probably not.

Let U = the number of items you have uploaded to the stex.

Let D = the total number of times your items have been downloaded.

Then your average number of downloads per item is D/U (I'll call this A)

Let S = the sum of the ratings for all your uploads.

Let C = the number of approved (thumbed up) comments you have made in the stex.

Then the number of points earned from the STEx = A+S+C

No matter where you go, there you are!

Vigilante, tat isn't true. I have one STEX upload, which has been downloaded 712 times, this would mean that I should get 712 points from the stex, however, my total amount of points is just 443, and that is without subtracting forum posts, thus, some other mechanism must be involved.

korot: why is there a Label Error 404 label under your name???

I guess it is a rank just like the Resident rank below your name. I remember a thread where they listed all those ranks, I guess I'll have to dig it up.

Korot

Edit: And there the label went away, now I am a resident again.

Which explains why my post-point gap has gone from 34 to 39.

Firstly, that upload is now rated 3.55 rather than 3.40, generating 36 points after rounding (hey, thanks whoever did that, by the way).

Secondly, my previously nonexistent STEX score is now... 3.

    So it's still adding up.

But then of course the question is begged, "how is your STEX score generated?" I can't claim to have an answer to that.

You've got an interesting theory going there, but there's one problem: your math is wrong. 1142 minus 432 is 710, not 610. 31.gif

Besides, my file has 702 downloads. I have nowhere near 702 spare points. So it fails the double check.

On the other hand, let's look at my formula here.

Your 22.72 rating sum is 227.2 points, rounded down to 227. Subtract that from 710 and we've got 483. Your STEX score is 18, and that brings us down to... 465 points unaccounted for.

Okay, so my idea still holds except that there are other factors we haven't identified (which I figured there were).

Help me out here, guys. Add yourself up like this:

Post count + STEX score + 10×(sum of the ratings of STEX uploads).

Compare to your actual points. Anyone getting anything that obviously indicates what an unaccounted for factor may be?

Does anyone have fewer points than this formula gives you? (because in that case, my theory has a critical flaw unless we can identify something which potentially subtracts points from your score)

When you put comments on STEX upload or city journals or post news items, people can rate your comment/news. These points contribute to it.

Bascially anywhere you comment and it has a (# points) [up arrow] [down arrow] contributes to the score.

But there's not a great way of seeing any more contributing factors because do you know where every STEX comment is, so you can find them all and count them up?

@Duke: There is also a component related to the new CJ section. Updating a CJ is worth 5 points. I don't currently have a blog, but there may be points associated with that section as well.

    This one's easy, 74 posts, 2 CJs= 76 points. That's me.

Hmm... updating a CJ in the new CJ section gives you 5 points, but updating a CJ in the old section only nets you one...

A cunning plan to shift everyone over to the new section, perhaps?

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

It's impossible for the system to discern between a CJ update in the forum and a "regular" forum post.

Edit: Reply to warrior's last post made here:

No, that you are getting close and that Dirk prefers that you will not leak out any more details, as he wants the inner workings of the system to remain quiet.

    As to my points:

    446 total

    333 posts made in forums

    47 points by STEX upload

    3 points from STEX score.

That leaves 63 points unaccounted for. I do have posts in the new CJ section, though I've got no idea how many, but I doubt that it are 63.

Okay, strike my last post on this topic. As I mentioned my points is equal to my posts + 2. I thought I only had one cj, but I remembered that when I first joined I started a thread in the cj section called "mapping things out." (I had intended to post pics of maps I had drawn on 8 1/2 x 11's and then try my best to bring the maps to SC4. I never followed through b/c I located my maps but not the one I wanted to do! After several weeks of not being able to find it, I scrapped that idea. I never went back to it b/c why revive an old cj just to tell people it won't be happening.) So anyway, now that you know that useless information, we can conclude that no points are assessed for ST donations. Since I have no STEX uploads, I can really offer nothing more to this cause, but my curiousity will lead me back to see what you all have discovered.

I noticed something, When I am in the STEX, it says I have 185 points, but when I am in the forums, it says I have 188. Is it a glitch, or is it divided and my true total is 373 points, or did I not read things correctly and this is completely normal and everyone was talking about this.

EDIT: I posted this and now my forums points went to 186 points.

I have 977 at the moment, unsure why exactly, although it may have something to do with some lots that I uploaded in 2004 (although they are really rubbish!)

Why is delivery by boat called a cargo and one by land called a shipment?

I don't think we'll ever know exactly how the system works. Our overlords aren't all too fond of revealing secrets. 2.gif
