They are not just equal to posts if you comment on CJs people can give you points by clicking the up triangle near your comment. As far as i know they are only for braging rights but as the site updates there may be more added to the system hope this helps

Indeed, there currently is no real use for the points, they are meant to show how much you did for the community. Something that I just thought of: What if you place a comment and the comment gets downrated? And this comment is the only post on the site? Would you get a negative amount of points and, more importantly, does the 'member in good standing' change to something else?
