Celebrity deaths always come in threes...

There's no denying he was weird, but he was also incredibly talented; he arguably invented the music video (I know there were videos before Thriller, but nothing like it). This certainly came out of nowhere.

And for the record, I don't believe he did it.

Michael Jackson broke the record for most facebook Statii [yes. that is now the official plural form of status] today. Its sad though about his death. I was just watching the michael jefferson south park so now i feel kind of bad. Even though he got really weird and creepy in the end of his life, he did contribute alot to our culture.

He was always a creep to me, however his old music was great. But what a shock to the world, he was young as well. R.I.P.

Way back, when he was that 10 year old performing with his brothers, my mom said "Heaven help that child when he grows up."   I asked her what she meant and she said he would never recover from not having a normal childhood.

In his case, on some level, that was true.   I remember reading an interview where he said the only place he was comfortable when he was onstage; that he would sleep onstage if he could.   Not exactly a well-adjusted approach to life.

That's a good way of putting it.  That was when people started really paying attention to music videos.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

Well this is certainly a tragic loss. His older stuff was great.

Now who will be the universal answer to every joke though?

Personally, the best I can say for him is that he was exceptionally weird.  At worst, he was somewhat disturbing.

often in the music world, weird is good 3.gif

ya I agree he was an oddball at times, but this guy was one of the most influential musicians of the last 50 years. There are countless bands that would never have existed without him.

Queue the hysteria and 24 hour news cycle. Can't anyone just die with dignity anymore?

It's interesting. I was at a concert earlier when I heard about this. Of course, it was from my friend's sister calling via cellphone, so I took it as "there's a rumor going around that Micheal Jackson died". Several more whispers were heard about it over the course of the night, but without confirmation from an actual news source I knew beter than to just assume the story was accurate.

So, it's true then. Huh.

I don't know if anyone's noticed this yet, but is anyone else finding it quite odd how much Michael Jackson's life mimicked Elvis's?

Both were super-popular international superstars.

Both had careers that waned after descending into madness. (Elvis thought he was psychokinetic, got hooked on prescription drugs, shot TVs, etc. Jackson... well, you know...)

Both descended into mere caricatures of their former selves.

Both died looking absolutely nothing like the hearthrobs they once were.

Both died far younger than they should've.

And I reckon that it is entirely likely that there will be suspicion surrounding Jackson's death for many years to come, just like Elvis.

And I won't be at all surprised if there are Michael Jackson sightings for the next 20 years.

Well, looks like I needed to watch the news instead of watching movies. This is the first I've heard of it. RIP and please don't come back. Thriller was good for the movies, but real life will cause a real panic.

And Zelgadis, if what you're saying is true, then there will be Micheal Jackson impersonators within the year.

Say what you want about him, Thriller was arguably the best pop album of the 1980s, and helped change the face of the genre.

OMG, I still can't believe it... I mean he's the 'King of Pop', he can't just die, right? Despite of his controversial personality, he was an amazing artist. His songs are classics! And I'm in shock... I mean he was around as long as I can think, he probably was the first celeb I've known. RIP Michael Jackson!

It's pretty sad... I loved his music and he was a great addition to the entertaining community... His film clips were the best!

Just heard the news and yeah I only listen/download his music for over a year and saw a movie. But damn, he was great. It's sad, because now we must suffer even more from the bad music in the world. Now we don't have great really good videos and so on. Mwah, it's sad, but hey, 50 years is a great age, and yeah he was weird, but he was cool9.gif

Holy moley, didn't expect this, I thought he would live for quite a while. Maybe all the stress of the molestation charges and stuff just got to him, the millions flushed down the pan in legal payments. I can't imagine how even a sane person could cope with that.

I remember watching a Documentary about him a few years back, he was walking through some kind of museum looking at Pharaoh's caskets, the reporter asked him something like "Would you like to be Buried in one of these?", Jackson turned around and exclaimed "I'll never die, i'll live forever!"... yeah, not quite Jacko. Not even nearly. 50? Crap, my dad turned 50 in February and I still reckon he's got a good 30-40 years left in him.

RIP

Yeah.

he might have been "weird" but truthfully anyone who only judges him by that doesn't respect his music. And I don't even really like pop music

I have a feeling his greatest comeback of all will be now after his death. The bad stuff will slowly be forgotten while a new wave of his old stuff being played as tributes will rekindle interest. I agree with Zelgadis about Elvis. And that's why I say this. People in 2009 still love Elvis, the white-suited sunglasses wearing Elvis of the classic years. Not the fat and drug-addicted bad pop gimmick Elvis of the 1970's.

Who knows, it's probably true that fame messes up people, even way back the greeks had a myth about it.

RIP Micheal... From kid star, to larger than life star, to child endangerer, accused rapist, and punchline... Now, ultimately, you legacy will be your music and most notably, Thriller.

So, my take gets censored, and removed? Good to know ST doesn't tolerate any opinions it doesn't like. Especially when it comes to pedophiles.

Let no one yield, we're on the field where deeds eclipse the sun; where the brave are told on a thread of gold, the tapestry is spun. As they speak of dreams, their armor gleams, this calm before the storm... Where all can see their destiny, the bishop takes the pawn.

He was a record smashing artist that died too young.

The pop star on Heroin should have died not him.
