The Lot looks nice, and maybe that's the best solution for your building. As you know lots can be only squares and rectangles, and roads can meet with 90 or 45 deg. intersections only.So there aren't many diagonal or triangle-shaped buildings, let alone your building which has a more complex shape...but it's quite good to know that someone BATs them.

Not easy to start a new project with a new "tool". (But Cockatoo is giving a lot of pressure, just look at his bat thread...9.gif)

So her is a pic of my new project. Those who have pics of the base and/or top are very welcome!44.gif

PS: before I start, can somebody tell me if this tower (Portofino tower from Miami) was already bat?

Wow, nice tower you've picked out there...

Hey, it's not that bad. It didn't take me that long to make the transition from Gmax to 3dsmax. All the modeling / basic commands are essentially the same, you just have to learn how to use the new material editor, play with night-libraries and mess around with your rendering and lighting settings until you find something you like. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it with time.

Jason and Simfox are out resident experts here, with these guys in the forums you can't go wrong.

Thanks a lot for your comments, I had to change my mind with my previous choice (HK Hyatt)  because I had very few pics. I have to say that for the Miami buildings I can find pratically all the pics I need like, for intance, floor plans which of course help a lot to start moddeling. Yes, the new moddeling editor is something...!42.gif26.gif39.gif32.gif17.gif

Okayyyyyyy! So , before starting, I made quick rough copy with Gmax, to see what appearance could be in SC4 (with this specific view) the result is :

    portofinogmax2.jpg

As you can see these windows are not very visible due to the balcony which is as is suppose to be i.e. 2.4 to 2.5m deep. So, do you think I have to reduce the balcony deep or increase the high between 2 flats (which already is 4 m), or let it like it is?

Why not just model this in Max and use the Preview?

(All you need to do is click 'Reset Lights & Cameras', then 'Refit LOD's' and then just click preview.)

That doesn't exactly look like a 10min model to me, sorry to say this, but I think you may have wasted your time.

Good to see that somebody is following what I write2.gif. Dear Cockatoo, I did it on a PC (my laptop) which has Gmax and not max that why I started it with Gmax. BUT!  next step for sure will be with max! Thanks a lot for visiting my thread44.gif. BTW , you did'nt answer to my question, i;e with the angle view in the game , I am afraid that the windows shown "supra" will not be visible. So do you think is better to reduce the balcony or increase the hight between the flat? Please, help me to solve this (quite) existentialist issue.

well you probably wouldnt see windows on balconied floor in rl from this angle so why make the balconies unrealistic to show off some more glass. we see glass in other places on the structure... personally i'd go with it as is..... it looks different and interesting...

If you're worried about not seeing the windows, then reduce the width of the balconies. 4m is my personal maximum for a tower floor height, any higher would make the entire thing look out of proportion.

If your focus is for 100% realism though, you should leave everything in its proper place, but if your focus is for 100% ascetic appeal then I'd reduce the balconies (because they don't look great the way they are.) It's up to you.

Yes that is normal, as is says in Simfox's post, the night window function is only compatible with max 7.

The building looks very nice so far, I love the shape. Perhaps you can give us a preview render rather than a perspective view port shot (the second picture is a bit huge, might want to re size it before the mods get to you, just link to the full size).

Glad you are getting used to MAX, you will definitely appreciate it!

I agree with what SimHoTToDDy said.

For images, the rule is that they need to be 800x600 pixels or smaller. I don't personally care if they're bigger than that, as long as the size is reasonable, but your image is really quite gigantic.

The shadows are so strong because you don't have any indirect illumination! 2.gif

I don't know why your windows are not transparent.

Hi Francisco, yes it is this one :

    hotel7.jpg

Of course it is just the bigining, I was just tasting the new  material editor. In fact I work on both project , the other is the Portofino Tower (which is really more complex) ° So to start with max, I choose something easier.

Nice work! It's great to see you using Max at last.

It's good that you've taken the time to set up your own lighting rig (I only got around to making a proper one last week) but I can't help you with your 'indirect illumination' issue as I use Max 7 + BAT4Max 2.6. At the very least make sure that you're using the Mental Ray render engine and have Final Gather enabled. Some gamma correction can also really help too when it comes to fine tuning how bright or dark your renders appear.

btw, when I first loaded Max with BAT4Max installed it gave me the exact same message about night-windows being disabled (even though I actually use 7).

Probably for the best though, as night-windows are totally pointless when compared to night-libraries. If you haven't already, read a tutorial on them - they're probably one of the most fantastic improvements on the Gmax BAT.

have you given the windows thickness/backfaces.... if not you need to use a glass as plane material for it to render properly.....

yes the lots can only be square or rectangles, but still diagonal growing lots are possible.. I made them out 3.gif and even diag-to-diag corner are.. although not pratical.. I was bating a series of diagonal residential buildings to release.. I have to get back to them one day ^^
