Agreed. Swat, you should be a secretary, but Andre should be the leader. We need to get organized if progress is going to start.

Yeah, forgot the secretary thing. It doesn't make sense now that I'm thinking. Assign people to departments... Lotters to Buildings Team or Transit Team, BATers to Design, Texturers to Textures of course. We're probably done with music but there might be FX we might need. Modders to Modd Team. Graphics and Text Editing will also be a choice. Note: Used from the simmars site.

[*][*] UI Editing (text editing, god mode buttons, etc.)

[*][*] Other Design

[*] Modification and Remodeling

[*][*] Simulation Modding

[*][*] Other Modding

[*][*] Lotting

[*][*] Dependency Management (textures, etc.)

[*] Release Crew and Management

[*][*] Recruitment

[*][*] Leaders (unless everyone works as equals)

[*][*] Installer Creation and Cleanup

[*][*] Release Finalization

[*][*] Consultation

NOT WHAT I MEANT!!! We shouldn't be telling people what they 'need' to be doing to satisfy our agenda.

We should create a list of things that need to be done and volunteers can choose to work on those projects or not.

We should never discourage anyone from working in this forum if SimMars is their interest. Whether they work toward a beta or not.

SimMars doesn't need leaders, or teams, or secretaries, or vice-assistant-co-secretaries, or departments, or websites, or intro movies, or logos, or brainstormers, or cool ideas. It needs workers to actually do it, so everyone make sure that your goal is to actually finish SimMars.

Well, with all due respect, I think we do need cool ideas and dedicated organizers (who may choose to work within departmental structures). But I get your point.

Let's start a thread to discuss the wish list for beta 3.

I'm Thinking...

1.) (Called Buildings Team) Mostly users that use the BAT will be on this team. They will mainly create Civic, and Utility Buildings.

2.) (Called Transit Team) A couple Lotters, a couple BATers and some modelers will create Transportation tools. They will finish avenue!!

3.) (Called Re-lot Team) Mainly Lotters but some BAT users will be on this team. These people will try to work on Res, Com, Ind & Ag Buildings.

4.) (Called Textures Team) Texturers will be on this team (Obviously) and they will create/find textures to use in other departments.

5.) (Called Modding Team) Modders will be on this team and will modificate the files to recreate the game into a mars-like atmosphere.

6.) (Called FX & Music Team) Song Writers and Sound FX creations will make up this team. They will create sounds and put in FX for the game.

7.) (Called Graphics Team) People who can redo graphics will be on this team. They will recreate the SC4 graphics to make it more Mars-like.

8.) (Called UI Editor Team) Users who make tools and editors (for spelling + grammar) will be on this team. the will recolor, redo, and text edit SC4.

9.) (Called Coordination Team) This is a volunteer section. This departments works with other departments and will find needed programs.

10.) (Called Terrain Team) The land in Mars is all well but we are still trying to figure out what to do with trees. Modelers will go into the section.

11.) (Called Recruitment Council) A experienced volunteer group will go in this section. They will assign departments and work alongside the Coordination Team.

12.) (Called Consultation Team) This team is pretty much a broadcasting center, handling the public.

13.) (Called Website Team) This Team is a council of experienced Volunteers that will handle creating and mantaining a SimMars website.

Ok sorry I mean that people will chose departments they would like to be in and the Council will chose the best of them and then they will focus on that topic but they can still help out on other topics too.

What do departmental structures accomplish? How many people are there working and what are their skills? What still needs to be done (from my understanding, BATs and lots) and how complicated is that work flow? Does this require bureaucracy?

I say No. But the general temperament of the room seems to be leaning toward authoritarianism and bureaucracy. I'm just trying to limit the damage.

Time - Who gets to pick the Council? The community is too fluid for that kind of leadership.

Ok so we don't want a leader.

Who will organize the whole thing then? We expect tens of people to come together all at once and put an entire mod together and keep general stats and progress reports on it all? While at the same time, those same people are supposed to be coming up with content and continuing to develop SimMars.

I think its the 'title' of leader not the 'job' of leader to which we mostly object. 

In 'faerie' circles we have 'facilitators'. They co-ordinate projects and gently guide their willing equals into areas of work that might be of use to the community.

Unfortunately there's ALOT to do besides BATs and lots and Swat is probably right that an organized effort to correct some of the deficiencies in the beta2 mod would be most effective.  Any one of us probably could fix it by e'self given time - but who wants to play alone?

By nature, some of us are  better BATters; and some are better modders or organizers. Play to your strengths.

Good lord! This is turning into a bureaucratic nightmare! We don't need all these officers and positions. All we need is a pseudo-leader (someone who can coordinate) and everyone else can see what needs to be done, say they will do it, and DO IT! Yeesh! I'm still fuzzy... will andisart be joining us?

That is exactly what Swat-medic is trying to do. E just didn't say it very well.

Andi answered earlier when Time invoked a curse on all usurpers. I expect e is catching up on what's happened here and will make an official announcement soon.

This isn't suppused to be bureaucratic, just certain topics of SimMars members are focused but not forced to work on. Agree, lets get this settled by Friday or Thursday. I did invoke a curse on Swat, but he has stepped down so Andre's probably not gonna ban him... 3.gif

SWAT, no worries, you were just showing enthusiasm and initative for the project and that's great! 

Speaking out of experience, having too much burocracy, positions, etc. is counter-productive. 
This has not worked for the inital SimMars team and also other projects of this kind. As I said earlier and as Jasoncw has pointed out as well, at the end of the day all that counts is creating content.

While I see the point of  the necessity of having at least some coordination for the sake of bringing things together, I feel that there should be a sense of equality and focus on the project itself.

SimMars is an open community project and everyone can contribute, if it's only a one time contribution or a permanent one, all is welcome. There is no need to have to "be in the team", once you contribute you take part and you are part.

So if you have a skill and feel like doing something in a particular area, bring it in. 
We're supposed to enjoy this 2.gif

So I suggest as a start to have a briefing, where everyone can say what skills they have and then we compile a list of things that can be done and we'll take it from there.

I will open a thread for it in the Workshop forum.

I remember the days of the BETA 1. I made the installer that was published. There was a bug in the original, and the authoer was unavailable. Good times... That was just over 4 years ago.
