So what is Fortune all about, and how did it come to be Canada's 11th Province?

Disclaimer: FICTION!.

Introduction

Fortune is Canada's last province to join confederacy. While Fortune's history dates back around 500 years, only recently has it been a province of Canda. Fortune joined confederacy September 4, 1967 after the completion of the 100 years deal. You can find Fortune on any map of Canada in any Canadian Atlas published after 1967.

map_of_canada.jpg

If you can't tell from the map, 11th province is an island, far from the main land of Canada. You can get a better perspective from Google Maps.

Lets take a look at the satelitte view.

History

In 1576 Sir Martin Frobisher, an English privateer licensed by the British Government sailed to the North of Canada in search of the Northwest Passage. Frobisher settled on Baffin Island and discovered mineral ore that was thought to be gold. Frobisher made three trips to the North of Canada. Each time he asked the British Government for more men in order to establish a mining community. On his third trip in February 1578 Frobisher’s men excavated and transferred approximately one ton of ore onto Frobisher’s ship. Frobisher and his men disbanded the mine and set sail back home to Britain. Unexpectedly, the weight of the ore caused for tough sailing conditions. In November 1578, a strong Atlantic storm swept Frobisher off course. His ship ended up sinking several kilometers off the shores of an undiscovered, uninhabited island. Several men including Frobisher survived the wreck and were washed to shore. Frobisher gave the island the name Fortune, in his dismay of losing all his ore. He claimed the island for England.

With the discovery of Fortune, the British government quickly acted to settle the island. In 1580 the British Government also sent Frobisher back to Fortune in search of his wreck and the lost ore. By 1583 Frobisher founded the first settlement in Fortune; he named the settlement Frobisher, after himself. Unfortunately for Frobisher the shelf off the west coast of Fortune drops sharply one kilometer from shore. Frobisher was unable to reach his sunken ship. Frobisher died in 1597.

In mid 1600s, Fortune became a large trading partner with North America and Britain. Fortune traded raw materials with North America and manufactured goods with Britain. Despite the location and the wonderful climate of Fortune, the British Government encountered difficulties settling the island. By 1663, the population of Fortune was a mere 7,500. Fortune started to cost the British Government a lot of money.

In an attempt to help the island gain popularity, in 1710 the British Government sent a fleet to recover Frobisher’s wreck; a second attempt at recovering the lost ore. In 1711, the recovery fleet found Frobisher’s wreck and was able to salvage half a ton of the lost ore. The ore was taken back to Britain to be refined. Unfortunately, the ore mined by Frobisher only turned out to be pyrite, otherwise known as fool’s gold. The British Government was angered with the finding, and in order to distance themselves from this costly embarrassment they renamed the city of Frobisher, Fortune City.

Britain was desperate to wipe their hands clean from the island of Fortune. In 1867 Canada gained confederacy and became its own country. Shortly after confederacy, Britain tempted Canada into taking Fortune into its dominion. The British and the Canadians agreed to the 100 years deal; a deal that saw Fortune transfer into Canadian confederacy 100 years after the agreement was signed. The agreement was signed September 4, 1867.

Canada saw this as a great opportunity, and sent a massive European wide advertisement campaign tempting Europeans to settle the Island. Canada’s plan was to have large population living in Fortune before it becomes part of Confederation. In September 4, 1967, Fortune joined Canadian confederacy. Fortune became Canada’s new dominion. The population Fortune’s population was 750,000 when it joined Canada as the 11th province. The population of Fortune is now currently over 1,500,000.

jjune4991: Those squares of road you see is are my range and grid roads. I like to set up farm land before I start developing cities.

psander: Thanks! I was specifically going for the North American look, particularly what you see in western Canada and the United States.

GreekMan: Along with the suburbs I try to integrate bus stops at the main intersections inside the subdivision. If you still experience more abandonment, try planting God Mode trees while using cheetah speed. That usually gets the residents back.

Thanks for all of your comments guys!

YAY! You made a cj! I was impressed by your other region (Sellesomething) and was hoping you'd show more...your attention to detail is amazing, such as your skyscrapers downtown all matching. Great work!

GreekMan: The W2W buildings on the very right of the mosaic (if we're talking about the same ones) are default maxis buildings in the New York Tileset. They are medium density, medium wealth residential.

jjune4991: Thanks! Being raised in a small city in Saskatchewan, I am very used to the square grid farmland.

IDS2: Thanks for the comment. I tried to give most of my downtown the same sort of look (New York tileset) to give it some character and a sense of history. I do plan on adding some newer styled buildings as Fortune ages and developed more.

Godzillaman: It's funny you mention that because I thought the same thing. Several tall buildings in the middle of a bunch of low density buildings. I'm sure as I keep expanding and developing the region, Downtown Fortune will have more medium density buildings.

    Tia-may: Thanks!

masochist: Thanks a lot. I have been wanting to start a CJ for the longest time. I just never know how to start one, but here I am. I decided I would just wing it!

    Update 2

I don't have too much to show off. For the first update I will stay in the city of Fortune.

This mosaic runs down the commercial strip along Parker Ave. as it intersects with Wilkerson St.

Looks very nice...interesting details friend. definitely like this one.

I do suggest however, putting your pics one on top of the other... Putting them side by side causes a scrolling issue ( left, right, up down...its all cumbersome and could lose a lot of interest. ith MOST members). It's just more user friendly when doing it like that.

rusty_777: Thanks. It took some time to perfect the look of the main business area, but I am pretty proud of how it looks with all those parking lots. I went on Google maps to see the aerial view of my home town's main commercial strip and tried to recreate the look.

fabsies55: Thanks for the comment. By adding more colour I'm assuming you mean in my downtown area since most of the buildings are white and gray. The city is still young in its development, but when I start to grow it more I'll start adding more red brick and finally I'll add modern glass buildings. I'm trying to give somewhat of a historical perspective on its development.

Tia-may: Thanks for visiting my CJ again. Now, in the city of Fortune, the richest residents either live in downtown condos, or in mansions along the shoreline. I want to do some development and terraforming before I show off that area. In the city of Carlton, the richest residents live in condos in downtown, and in Fordson they live in a condominium complex by the golf and country club. Carlton and Fordson will be featured in today's update.

GreekMan: Thanks buddy, it's nice of you to drop by again.

KingTitan: Thanks for the comment. About the pictures appearing side to side, in my web browser I don't have that problem. Are you using Firefox or IE? I'm really not sure how to correct the problem since it doesn't show up on my browser. Does anyone else have this problem?

aleking: I really appreciate the comments. Coming from a Simtropolis member as accomplished as you, it really means a lot. I hope I don't disappoint with this CJ!

    Update 3

Before I show anything new, I figured I would show you an overview of the city of Fortune and surrounding communities.

    Fortune_named.jpg

I plan on developing small CBDs in Schecher, Weisbeck and Commeau. Eventually I plan to have these cities sprawl out, but I don't expect to make them as big as the city of Fortune.

Lets move further south to the Carlton Metropolitan Area. Carlton is the oldest and the largest of the cities in the area. Up the river from Carlton is Riverbend, the smallest of the cities in the area. Fordson is a poor city in comparison to the others across the river. The majority of Fordsonites work at the seaport which is within the city limits. Green Valley is an up and coming city filled with high and medium wealth residents. There has been a recent boom in developments along the shoreline.

    Carlton_named.jpg

Here is a peak at downtown Carlton.

    downtown_carlton.jpg

The majority of residents living in and around downtown Fordson are poor, with a few exceptions...

    downtown_fordson.jpg

...the Harbour View Golf and Country club located west of downtown Fordson is one of those exceptions.

    fordson_country_club.jpg

I don't have any picture of Green Valley, Colton or Riverbend, but I plan on having they featured in my next update.

That's all I have for now, I hope you enjoyed the update.

Should I post more pictures with each update? Would you like more descriptions for each picture?

Feel free to make suggestions as to how you think these cities and how this CJ can improve. Thank you for all your comments and please visit again!

you have a original way of building your city, the roads are hmm.. I dunno if I like it or not at least not by looking at the region map. But from what I can see on the zoomed in pictures your city looks great, very north-american and I wouldn't mind playing some golf in your city 4.gif

    Update 4

I have been working quite a bit on a few new developments. Weisbeck has grown to a pop of about 15,000 and I started a new city of Link, south east of Schecher which has grown to about 50,000. I also finished the airport north of downtown Fortune.

However, I decided not to update you with any pictures of Fortune. This time around I'm including some teasers of a side project I have been working on.

Quite realistic, and I like the road network. Kind of a rotating grid. The architectural style is also pretty unique on this site (we are lovers of glass and steel), which gives the whole thing a very original look.
