I disagree with the poster who said that the roads in the original city weren't that nice. i think they looked rather nice.

BTW, nice work with Regina. I like mid-rise cities.

So it's been a long time since I've updated my CJ. I apologize for that, but I've been really busy since the school year started. On top of that, I've been working on developing my cities so that they're 100% presentable, I did not want to update you with any works in progress. Without further delay, I'll start with replies.

    Replies

Equilibria: Thanks! I love working with grid, whether its orthogonal, diagonal or somewhere in between. Mind you, I'm working on the earliest developments in the history of these cities, so when I get into newer subdivisions I'll be turning the road layouts into more random suburban type sprawl. As far as the building types, again as these cities grow and develop, they will start to build with a more modern style. If you are a lover of glass and steel, be sure to checkout the resort city of Green Valley, which incidentally is featured in this update.

    zelgadis: Thanks for your comment.

Edmonton_stinks: Thank you! I have put a lot of effort into getting the road layouts to scale. I have a 1:50,000 scaled map of Regina with all the boundaries of the large city tiles traced on. All I have to do is make measurements and convert them with a little formula I came up with.

GreekMan: I chose to do Regina because this is where I live. On top of that, the flat landscape makes the terraforming (or lack thereof) really easy.

beebs: Thanks! There will be more pictures as I grow more of the city.

boon1234: Thanks for coming to my defense! Regina is a pretty nice city; it has a decent downtown for city with a population >200,000.

    roboo1: Thanks for the comment!

jacqulina: Thanks for dropping by, and thanks for the bday wish!

    art128: Thanks for your comment.

fabsies: Thanks! Don't worry, I do plan on growing the cities a little more, which would included getting taller and more modern buildings.

    un1: Thanks for the comment.

    Godzillaman: Thanks man!

And now, on with the show!

    Update 5

    greenvalley_banner.jpg

Welcome to Green Valley! Green Valley is the tourist destination of Fortune. Here is an update of what Green Valley looks like from the region view.

    greenvalleyoverview.jpg

Lets take a little closer look at the waterfront district of Green Valley, be sure to click the image to get the full 6317 x 2195px resolution.

    greenvalley01.jpg

During the summer months, the beaches that line the waterfront of Green Valley are packed with tourists and locals. During the winter months tourists from cold climates don't notice the chill of the waters, but the residents take this time to cruise the harbour in their boats. Residents have leave their boats at the marina year round, but the marina also offers rentals for the tourists.

Only the wealthiest of Sims can afford a suite in the luxurious Aurora View Towers. The Bella Vista Residences is a less expensive alternative.

    greenvalley03-1.jpg

The Tides Hotels and Suites are a top destination for the wealthy businessmen of Fortune City. Some even own condos in neighbouring Harbour Town Tower.

    greenvalley02-1.jpg

The Magnolia Galleria is a hot spot for the mall rats. Four full floors and over 300 shops for all your shopping needs. The Magnolia Galleria also has an indoor amusement park, a skating rink and a mini golf course to fulfill all  your entertainment needs.

    greenvalley06-1.jpg

    Other alternatives for shopping.

    greenvalley07-1.jpg

The majority of Green Valley residents live and work in downtown.

    greenvalley04-1.jpg

That is all I have for now, I hope you enjoyed your visit to Green Valley.

What a stunning CJ you have here! Really gorgeous...

The region view just looks fantastic!! Very greenish.

The only thing I can say it that you have to watch out with using low-rise and high-rise next to each other... It is a bit unrealistic.

Try to climb down like a ladder from skyscrapers to big apartments, then smaller apartments to finally houses.

But apart from that, this CJ looks great! 2.gif Good luck!

    xoxo Carmine

CarmineHilton: Thanks for your comment. I agree with you that it is a little unrealistic having highrises next door or across the street from houses. I'll see what I can do to fix that, but for Green Valley I was trying to give the impression that the new glass and steel highrises are all brand new developments. I eventually plan to have apartments to offer some sort of buffer between the tall buildings and the low density housing.

As for Fortune, that's a bit of another story. There isn't much gradual rise in density between the houses and the taller buildings because really, the STEX and Maxis doesn't really offer a wide variety of buildings in the 20-40 floor range. It seems to range from about 6-13 floors for medium density buildings and then skip all the way up to another range of around 50-70 floor skyscrapers.

Great work, I really like what you've done so far. And the somewhat newer development of those hotel complexes along the shore are a very nice idea. I also liked what you've shown us from your Regina recreation.

I felt a little inspired today and I decided to flare up my CJ with some banners. Also, I was checking my CJ from Internet Explorer for the first time and I finally fixed the issue with the images appearing horizontally on page 1. I hope you like the new look, and I hope you enjoy this update.

    Replies

    jacqulina: Thanks, as always!

    PhilsCafe: Thanks man.

GreekMan: Thanks. I guess I didn't make a CJ out of Sereten because I wanted to start a CJ with a new and less developed region. I have considered starting a CJ with Sereten, but now that I have Fortune started it'll have to wait.

    s_olah: Thank you!

art128: Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

    Update 6

    fia_logo.jpg

Welcome to Fortune International Airport! Fortune International is busiest airport in the province of Fortune, and is the main gateway from the mainland.

    fia_01.jpg

Fortune International has 4 terminals; A, B, C and D. The tall building adjacent to Terminal C is the hotel Delta at Fortune International.

Terminal A is open to international and regional flights from the airliner Fortune Pacific Air.

    fia_terminal_a.jpg

Terminal B is open to international flights from Air Canada. (These planes aren't Air Canada, but I couldn't find Air Canada 747s)

    fia_terminal_b.jpg

Terminal C is open to international and regional flights from United Express and North West Air.

    fia_terminal_c.jpg

Terminal D is open to regional flights from Air Canada Jazz.

    fia_terminal_d.jpg

The Delta at Fortune International is a four star hotel, offering relatively cheap rates for travellers passing through the airport.

    delta_at_fi_02.jpg

    delta_at_fi_01.jpg

All terminals and the Delta are connected by underground light rail called the Underground Link. Terminal A has 2 stops,  terminals B, C, and D and the Delta each have one stop. Here is the Underground Link map.

    underground_link_map.jpg

And finally, we'll finish with an overview of the airport and the runways.

    Development Update

As I mentioned before, I don't have any pictures to show you at this moment, but I will update you on some current developments. I have been working on a city called Link. Link is located two large city tiles south, and one large city tile east of downtown Fortune. Downtown Link is split in half by the freeway connecting it to the city of Fortune. Since downtown is split, it is somewhat low-key, the north-eastern side consists of older buildings, south-west has newer developments including the downtown shopping centre. Link is mostly urban and suburban sprawl, and has a population of about 100,000.

Be sure to drop by later tonight as I will have pictures of Link on display.

    Update 7

    link_banner.jpg

Welcome to Link. Link is a relatively old city, situated southeast of Fortune City. At one time Link was mainly a railway stop along the way to the south towards the cities of Carlton and Fordson, Link received its name historically from being the last stop on the railway from Fortune before reaching the city of Clancy (a city not yet previewed). After the emergence of the automobile, the province of Fortune relied less on the use of the railway. Because of this Link experienced a slow down in the economy. It wasn't until the Trans Canada #4 Highway between Fortune and Clancy was completed that Link turned into a boom town. The contruction of the highway, while beneficial to the Link's economy, was met by protest from residents who believed the freeway would split the city in two.

    link_aerial01.jpg

The city had no choice but to allow the highway to be built in its current location, but city officials vowed to keep both sides of the city connected. The municipal government spent enormous amounts of money into building overpasses to span the highway and connect both sides of the city.

    interchange01.jpg

    downtown04.jpg

The old downtown, also known as midtown, is located north east of the highway. This is where most businesses were located before the construction of the Trans Canada #4 highway.

    midtown01.jpg

    midtown02.jpg

In midtown it is very common to see floor level mom and pop stores with residents living in the upper levels.

    midtown03.jpg

St. Bernadine's Cathedral is the oldest chruch in Link. Every Sunday, hundreds of residents attend sermons from Father Malek.

    st_bernadine01.jpg

The Oriet Plaza is at a prime location for the midtown businesses. Businessmen and local shop owners take their lunch to the plaza to enjoy the outdoor and to take a break from their jobs. Oriet Plaza is also located adjacent to three of midtowns most prosperous hotels.

    midtown04.jpg

Hotel Link (green roof) and the Link Hyatt (next door) are a nice destination for businessmen, tourists and history lovers.

    linkhyatt_hotellink01.jpg

The Meridian Hotel is the only five star hotel in Link. Only the richest, most successful businessmen or government officials can afford to spend the night in these luxurious rooms.

    meridian_hotel.jpg

    kia_logo.jpg

The Kaplan International Airport in Link is the newest airport in all of Fortune. While Link may not have a large tourism industry, the new airport offers local businesses the opportunity to attract attention from the mainland as well as international opportunities.

    kaplaninternational01.jpg

Kaplan International has 3 terminals, a Sheraton Hotel located adjacent to Terminal 1, and the airline offices located adjacent to Terminal 2.

    kaplaninternational02.jpg

A closeup of Terminal 1 and the Sheraton at Kaplan International. Terminal 1 is open for international and regional flights from Fortune Pacific Air.

    terminal1.jpg

A closeup of Terminal 2 and the airline offices. Terminal 2 is open for regional flights from Air Canada Jazz.

    terminal2.jpg

Terminal 3 is open for international and regional flights from Northwest Air and United Express.

    terminal3.jpg

Since the construction and completion of Kaplan International, Link has experienced another economic boom. These times of economic prosperity meant that new businesses were willing to locate to Link. Since there were city ordinances to preserve historical buildings from Midtown, a new downtown was developed on the opposite side of the highway, on the southwest end. This location gave the new businesses more direct access to the industrial park, the railyard and the airport. This allowed a quicker delivery of goods.

    city_hall02.jpg

    city_hall01.jpg

    centralpark01.jpg

And the famous 4 star Hotel Chateau Deslaurier.

    chateau_deslaurier01.jpg

City Park Plaza is the newest complex in downtown Link. The East Tower (tower on the right, also known as City Park Tower 1) is the head offices of Fortune Bank in the Kaplan Plaines region. The west tower (tower on the left, also known as City Park Tower 2) is the head offices of Unicon Insurance in the Kaplan Plaines region. Attached to the towers to the north is the shopping complex with completes the City Park Plaza. The City Park Plaza shopping centre is a destination for all citizens of Link.

    downtown05.jpg

    downtown06.jpg

    And a reverse angle.

    downtown02.jpg

The effects of the economic boom is not only seen in downtown, but also in suburban areas.

    aspenacres_gcc02.jpg

The Aspen Acres Golf and Country Club offers the wealthy sims a place of rest and relaxation during the warm summer months. Residents who live in the Aspen Acres Estates are free to walk from their backyards and start a round of golf from the nearest tee.

    aspenacres_gcc01.jpg

While the economic boom was evident by the developments in downtown, and the growing wallets and heavy pocekts of the residents of Link, it was also apparent in the industrial sector. Demand for manufacturing businesses has also skyrocketed. The manufacturing district is growing at an exponential rate, and may soon need to expand south of the airport.

    industrialpark02.jpg

    industrialpark01.jpg

    industrialpark03.jpg

While times may be good for many residents of Link, some of them are still struggling to survive. Here is Transcona, one of the poor neighbourhoods of Link, right across the tracks from Downtown.

    transcona01.jpg

That is my tour of Link, I hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to post comments, criticisms and any suggestions you may have!

Next update will include a geography lesson of Fortune's land formations and bodies of water.

Wow. Nice job! I've seen some of your work before in the Show Us Your... Threads, and was always impressed. I really love the open spacing between skyscrapers in your downtown, but like CarmineHilton said, there should be better transitions between high and low.

Your golf courses look pretty nice as well, as do all the airports. Perhaps filling in the open spaces with some shrubbery or empty grass lots or the like would make them look even nicer than they already are.

You wouldn't mind telling me where all the airplanes are downloaded from, would you?
