MAYORAL DEBATE 2008!

 

(Mayor Jim Anderson)                (Buissnessman Kurt Larson)

“Hello and welcome to the 2008 Mayoral Debate here at City Hall on this rainy night. I am Steve Bosh, the host of this debate. We would like to welcome Mayor Jim Anderson ® and mayoral candidate Kurt Larson (D). In this debate I will ask questions on the following topics:

 

• City Budget
• Development in the city
• Halifax FC relocation
• Transportation
• Relations with other cities in the region/globally

 

We will begin with Mayor Anderson.”

 

Question (on the budget): If re-elected mayor how would you fix the current $1 billion dollar deficit the city faces? The city is facing this financial mess during these hard economic times. How would you solve it?

 

Anderson: First of all I would like to thank KUSI for sponsoring this debate and Mr. Larson.  Back on subject, the best way to attack the situation is to unfortunately raise takes to get the city back on track. Another way would be to cut salaries for all city workers including myself.

 

Larson: I would also like to thank KUSI and the mayor. I think that the best way to handle this situation is to file a bankruptcy and plead to the state of Nebraska to bail us out. That would be the best logical way instead of lowering salaries or raising taxes. (Cheers)

 

Question (Redevelopment in the city): As mayor how would to tackle the rising population off the city? Would you redevelop in the downtown core or spread outwards?

 

Larson: I would forget about the sprawl and start redeveloping in downtown. I don’t think sprawl is necessary right now I mean do we want to be another Los Angeles? (Semi-applause)

 

Anderson: I think that sprawl is the best way to go and it will ease up on congestion in downtown. Downtown has a population of 82,000 and will grow to 110,000 in five years.

(Also Semi-applause)

 

Question (Halifax FC relocation): Mayor Anderson what would you do about the Halifax FC issue? The organization wants to move to San Diego into a better stadium. They are currently at one of the oldest stadiums in Halifax and want more seats for there ever growing attendance record.

 

Anderson: If I was re-elected I would ask the team to move into the Halifax Municipal Stadium, home to the Bears football team. If that work I would surely build them a new stadium. Sports are a major thing for this city and they bring in revenue. (Applause)

 

Larson: Who cares about pro-sports anyway? It’s an excuse to get drunk and destroy property. I would tell them to go to San Diego! They are all rich millionaires who don’t care about others but themselves! (Boos)

 

Question (Transportation): As mayor what would you do about transport within the city? The city already has a heavily used bus and light rail system. Would you expand it and possibly into neighboring cities?

 

Larson: No I wouldn’t. The majority of citizens have cars so I would expand freeways and roads to the ends of the county. Mass transit is a waste of money and why should the city have to expand into other cities in the county. Let them take care of there own problems! (Lots of boos)

 

Anderson: I would expand the light rail system within the city and into other cities. I think it would be a great idea if we do that. As for expanding streets that would create traffic nightmares for the residents of this fine city! (Applause)

 

Question (Relations): Are relationships or partnerships (with other cities in the county or globally) important to the city? What would you do to strengthen these new relations?

 

Anderson: Oh yes, relations between this city and others within the region are important!

I also think that we should make stronger relations with cities in the AFDES. It is a vital part of the city. Metro hall was designed to build relations with the other cities in the county. (Lots of applause)

 

Larson: The AFDES? That’s the worst alliance because they are newbie’s! If I was elected mayor I would quit the AFDES and not be in any union. I want isolationism except with cities in this region. I hate this whole sister-city thing. (Some applause but more boos.)

 

Bosh: I would like to ask each person to rebuttal.

 

Anderson: Thank you and I want you to visit www. Re-electedMayorAnderson.com to join the cause. I think that Mr. Larson would destroy everything that I have built up. This is your future you are voting for. (Applause)

 

Larson: Please visit www.LarsonforMayor.com to help us get into City Hall so we can help you. There is a lot of corruption in city Hall due to Anderson and it would be a mistake to re-elect him. Thank You! (Applause)

Its a tuff decission... personally i like Anderson's plan better with the suburban sprawl and the greenbelt.
