    East Atkinos: A Glenwood Education

The Schulmania National Army has the need to train good officers. But, building a military from the ground up is very challenging. Luckily, capable leadership has led to the development of a new military academy to fill the officer ranks with capable and highly qualified personnel. At a site in East Atkinos, a sizeable contingent of engineers, builders and military personnel have converged to turn the rolling farmland into a sprawling military academy campus with supporting town and port. Named for the small farming village which once occupied this location, the new town of Glenwood centers around the state of the art Glenwood Military Academy.

    academy-wide1.jpg

A wide view of the campus and its surrounding town. The H. Irwin Rotunda is the centerpiece of the town. Its distinctive dome is featured on the gold 1 schulmoneta coin issued by Glenwood.

The military town has many of the comforts of civilian life. And the barracks for cadets and officer housing are on par with what you would find in the finest Schulminion town.

    barracks2-1.jpg

Most cadets are quartered in barracks such as these. They feature an interior courtyard for recreation, exercise and fresh air.

    barracks3-1.jpg

The barracks house several thousand cadets. Support staff lives in nearby homes. All have convenient access to the town's many amenities.

    residential1-1.jpg

Officers sometimes live off base but visiting officers usually stay in military facilities. It's just simpler that way.

    residential2-1.jpg

Officer quarters are similar to cadet quarters in many instances, but tend to have a bit more space.

    residentialpark.jpg

Here, nestled amongst some officer quarters, sits one of the town's many parks. They double as exercise areas for the cadets and as open space for the town.

You might be wondering what the value of a Glenwood education actually is. After all, there are many places to become educated and to get training. But, here, Chancellor Mooky has assembled the top military strategists and many of the finest instructors in every field. Saying "I went to Glenwood" will be as impressive to mention as the same statement about places like Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge, or La Sorbonne.

    chancellery55.jpg

The heart of the military's training is in The Chancellery, where Chancellor Mooky and several top military leaders are developing war strategy and using the opportunity to mentor junior officers serving as interns.

    chancellery2.jpg

Across the street, campus buildings at the academy's main entrance house specialized classes for military strategy (Kidd Hall, at bottom of picture) and Tactical Response Team training (Crabtree Hall, at top right).

Many of the academy's ceremonies take place on the parade grounds in the heart of the campus. But, a good number also take place inside. Those that take place inside are often at the National Military Chapel.

    chapel2.jpg

    chapel-belltower.jpg

Its dome and distinctive bell tower are landmarks well known in the area. It was modeled after a similar church in Atkinos.

    statue-wv.jpg

Some smaller events are held in The Quadrangle, in the shadow of the statue of Winged Feline Victory.

Let's examine a few more aspects of this military college town. The ferry port is on the north side of the city, and serves as the sea link to the nation via the Atkinos Channel.

    northside.jpg

The Chancellery anchors the north side of town. The other businesses in Glenwood Square are primarily commercial. The entrance gate to the main campus is opposite to that of The Chancellery's. The rotunda at the heart of campus is certainly hard to miss.

How could a person occupy their time on a visit to Glenwood? Despite its focus on academics and the military, there are still plenty of things to see and do off campus.

    seafront.jpg

There's a nice hotel on the square and several great stores along the seafront.

    moreshopping.jpg

The busiest shopping destination is the Trading & Scratching Post, an enclave of popular stores including the Fancy Feast Outlet Store and The Yarn Boutique.

    moreshops.jpg

Many shops line the boundaries of the campus, including the academy bookstore (the one with the columns), Leech Apothecary (to its left), Aliki's Pastries 'n More (the green roof to its right .Continuing to the right are C. G.'s Regulation Furcuts (includes fur cuts, kitty combing and brushing, and application of Frontline and/or Advantage), Muck & Arch's Swords & Armor Depot, and at the far right is The Wright Choice Uniform Shop.

    shopsonthecorner.jpg

A popular souvenir is getting personalized cat tags made. As you can imagine, no store is selling dog tags!

    CK-yumminess.jpg

And of course who could forget lunch? There's always Chicken King... but also of course many other favorites along Restaurant Row, including Sgt. Pepperoni's Pizza, Sirron's Sidewalk Café, and Le Bistro des Frères Simbourgeois. With so many choices, you must be ready to eat!

OK, quick technical question: does anyone know if you can modify an existing region map once the region is started? Say, if I wanted to take out a tile (not just export or import, but totally remove) from the Schulmania map or add on a new row of tiles elsewhere. I have an idea but I don't want to mess anything up.

    Thanks 9.gif

You can expand the region to the right and downwards by editing the config file. You can also turn large tiles into smaller ones. On the config bitmap, red=small city (1X1pixel), green=medium city (2X2 pixels) and blue = large city (4X4 pixels). You'd best back up the region before doing this.

Open the config file in an image editor (MS pain, for example), resize it to the size you want (1 pixel per small tile) and then color so the new cities you want are in the right spot. See jim 546's post for color and size details.

What exactly do you want to do?

Lots of restaurants and stores there, can't wait for more!

Sgt Pepperoni's Pizza sounds good. 17.gifI love me sum pizzaaaaa! That is one athletic cat in that video! That cat should be a stealthy opperative against Queensferry. 38.gif

As for the avenue, I don't really know how, but the asphalt texture could be replaced with a tiled path, and the sidewalk texture with bricks. The Medians could have a few big trees here and there, with benches and flower planters. And maybe even little food kiosks. Just my idea, to bad I can't mod. 3.gif

ComputerGuy890100 You are welcome. I hope it fits!

lucky7 A good idea.. sort of a national centerpiece? And, of course, a prize for your idea.

    prize6.jpg

    Hester Or perhaps several statues?

    prize4.jpg

Leech10 Of course! Our consultants are highly paid!

Hester Well, I suppose you could apply...

lucky7 Thanks. It is tranquil in appearance but the center of all military training.

Balkair Since it is a military academy, cadets are funded by the Schulmania National Military and live at the campus free of tuition and housing expenses. They also get free vet care and a food allowance. Cadet uniforms are free of charge and no payment is needed if they are kept in good shape.

jim 546 I was hoping that it would be easy. But I wanted to make sure before I accidentally killed anything. I am presuming white indicates no tillers on the picture? Thanks again for your help!

Sirron Kcuhc It looks like it should be pretty easy. I will give it a try and report back on how it goes.

Leech10 The reason I thought of it is that I wanted to kind of un-square off some of Schulmania's borders. Don't want it to get too boxy looking. So, it occurred to me that I could fuse another map onto one side of the map. Does it have to be in the bottom right or can it be anywhere?

Sirron Kcuhc And as you build and the population expands, you will find the tiles filling up pretty fast.

Sgt Pepper I am glad you like the present in the update for you. I had pizza for lunch, as a matter of fact.

jim 546 Indeed! A tasty treat for everyone!

It has to be either to the right, below, or both. Adding to the up or to the left is possible, but it requires much more work of importing city tiles into a new map.

Edit: Yes, white will create a hole in the map.

The red, lime green and blue colours for the config files have to be the right ones... the easiest way is probably to copy an existing config file, and then use the colour picker to get the right colour. In MS Paint... which works fine for this... zoom the image up to 800%, and turn the bitmap/grid on... then it is really easy to use the pencil to re-colour individual pixels.

MAP ALTERING STATUS REPORT: So far, adding to top right does not seem to be going well. Will let you know if it will work elsewhere.

    Wish me luck!

EDIT: Having better luck this time around... but it wiped out all of the tiles. So, good thing that it's the copy and not the original! WHEW!!!! Does anyone know if now that I have the right shape if I was to import the existing tiles, would they retain their connections and such? Subway, road, ferry and all that stuff? If I get this all to go well, I will have a new and more interesting coast to reveal later!

EDIT 2: Is the globe on the www.schulmania.info homepage working for you? It quit working for me and I don't know why... is it just me or is it kaput? Grrrr... technology!

EDIT 3: Giving up for the night... but making some headway. Looks like I need at least 3 copies to keep the original safe. I may just pull it out... but it'll be tomorrow before I know.

EDIT 4: At long last I have the correct configuration of tiles, but... the bottom right tiles are so far down in the corner that they are not on the screen. Odd. Anyone know how I could get them to come back?

You're not supposed to edit the top! That'll move the rest of the config and destroy the region for sure. I don't really understand No. 4. Can you post a pic of it?

Here's the anomaly I am seeing. Otherwise, things might just be OK. Any thoughts about this?

    copypic1.jpg

I am thinking about maybe adding a slender column of small tiles to the bottom right to push the others up. Hmmmm.... waddaya think?

EDIT: The region, if completely filled and not odd shaped, would be 15 large tiles high by 8 wide.

EDIT 2: The adding to the top has been successful one of three attempts on different regions. And it took 3 tries for that. So, of the 9 total top add attempts, one was successful [and on a test region... not on SchulmaniCopy]. At 11% effective, I will call Top Add a bust. Now, to try Bottom Add...

Maybe? How big is the region, though? It might just be be too big for everything to show up.

Edit: 15 large tiles tall might be a bit too big... try making several empty test regions, each one 1 large tile shorter until you get one where everything show up.

Only now I've realized that the Ministry for Foreign Trade of Terra Canis (MFTCT) has opened a branch in Schulmania... tststs, I guess I must interview the General on this.

Seems that he has further plans in peto. Anyways, as far as I know as a humble human, all the mystery about 'Terra Canis' and the General's home are to be unveiled in fall... I am so sure that he'll be on duty somewhre else. Wouldn't it terefore more than weird to unveil the location of Terra Canis, thus making a possible enemy aware of it?

Lucky Him, the General, he is now able to talk to Her Supreme Wirdle via a secure transwarp channel, directly from Terra Canis.

So, time will show HOW efficient the additional forces under General's Aliki are. Time doesn't pay for the bugggggggs, though...

Additionally, the General has wisely designed an ambassy for the mighty Schulminions and it is just up to Her Supreme Wirdle in which place is up to Her taste.

So, with the general on guard and ready, you will not fear any more harm

In four test regions, fusing two maps has worked successfully, and without the hidden corner tile syndrome (now known as HCTS). Now that I have seen that this works (the at the bottom instead of top route) the experiment will move to the next phase.. actually putting the tiles of one region into another. If anyone has any friendly advise on this (transferring terraformed/played tiles en masse) before I attempt it (easy enough to do 1 by 1... but there may be a better way), feel free to offer it!

    Wish me luck!

Thanks for keeping me posted. But to make sure I understand, you combined two regions and it worked? Is there any need to play with the configuring in the Documents? And call this advise if you want, but good luck. 4.gif

Krasnodar Limpopo? On a side note, just what region are you trying to add?

Sirron Kcuhc: The only playing with configuring needed is the modification of the config image, the moving of cities from place to place is all done from within SC4.

And I don't know of any way of moving the city tiles except for the one by one method.
