Yes I know there is a city naming guide, but I want to know how you come up with your cities names.

I usually take ages and just come up with them randomly while watching TV

I'm not sure if this is the right forum but you need a name to start building =D

Just open a map of a city (based on the kind you wish to replicate like British, European, N-Americain, Midwest...) and choose a random name!

Or, like mentioned above, just randomly search things or put names together!

Try things like:

Foxcroft (from the NYer)

Bowater (company in QC)

Altedon (Adelaide+Alton)

Ioca (Ipod+Coca)

Well, all the cities of my nation come from my surroundings, usually from the names of Neighborhoods or of Streets, such as Canoga City (Canoga Park in RL), and Sherman's Cove (Sherman Way).

Others, like my capital city, are just random, or come from staring at things. (paradise Valley is Random, while Mt. Fresca came when I was drinking a Fresca.)

Some of my names come from Latin words like

Aeternum: Farewell

Others come from two things put together

Sierrastare - Sierra , like the mountains and the word stare

And then there are some that are modified versions of Character Names

Lisianthius : Off of SHUFFLE! then slightly modified.

Other times I use British names

Inverhattan

Spittalhattan

Arlingstoke

Gathingate

Westinghill

I often get my regions fully landscaped and forested before I begin naming things and then I start coming up with a history behind them. Sometimes they're named for prominent features in the landscape that jump out at me, or I may find my little histories I develop brings a name.

Since I'm from a Spanish-speaking country (Venezuela), most of the names of my cities are of course in Spanish. My favorite ones are those of saints such as in California (San Pablo, Santa Catalina, San Nicol

I just open up the back of my atlas, close my eyes and randomly point my finger on a spot on that page.

And that is my city's name.

hehehe

I try using names of important BATers: Goober Gen Memorial Airport

But mostly after geographical things: Birch Park, Sandy Point

And commonly after real cities: New Dallas, LondonTown, Bejinville

I use random names such as Helicon, which is Greek I think, Miltonia, which is completely made up, Minnelavenia, I don't know what that is. Also sometimes I just add 'ia' to the end of a prominent feature there like Canalia, Miltonia, Estonia (which I realized is actually a country... weird), etc. Sometimes I also modify a word to make: Perpetua, Joetroplis, etc.

I usually go with a theme. I was obsessed with New Mexico a while back so I got out the atlas, Carrizozo being my ab fav. I did one where I used street names from the area where I had my first apartment. In my most recent region I've been using liquor inspired names, i.e. Barleydale, Hawp's Grove, Malt Mines, Stoutcliff etc.

I take inspirations from real names and those of games.

like I named an area in my new city nibernay valley, according to the nibernean area in TES4 Oblivion.

Other areas, especially in my old cj, are named after areas of the GTA titles or abstractions of real city names in the style that GTA abstracts the names.

Sometimes I name them after the geopraphical features of the city tile in game.

Other than that, I use google maps/earth to name areas, mainly inspired by us names.

Speaking of them, I found a great website listing almost every town's name in the us, sorted by states and county, here's the linky

I use names of cities and towns in Texas, since I live in Austin. I'll also use those names for natural formations like rivers and mountains, as well as parks and such.

I take American or German City names (or both) and twist 'em, even though they sound completely different. Just as long as it sounds ok, i'll use it. Like for example: Akron, OH became Anark, and then I started mixing them, Palm Springs and Westphalia becoming Pomphylia.

I just use the first thing that pops into my head.

The most important name/names for me are for my central cities. My current region is a twin city and its surrounding suburbs, towns and other environs.

So, I put thought into the twin cities, creating some history around them.

The suburbs and small towns are named for real suburbs of chicago (where I live), neighborhoods in Chicago, and for downstate towns. Or for fictional cities (ie Hill Valley), goofy stuff (Margaritaville), or for people, both real and fictional, or for natural features of a town. Or something more ironic.

I struggle more with mayor names, since I don't use my name. I try to associate the mayor's name with the town and the town's background.

The Almighty Cheese Grater: That is so funny and creative! Naming cities after cheeses.

I like naming my cities with the word "Park" in it, along with the geographical or topographical feature that is distinctive of the city, like Park Beach, Park Shores, Park Ridge, or Park Peak. I eventually run out of names and use directions, like North Park Ridge.

I always take a map (mostly atlas) and just take a look to city names. Then I choose parts and the other parts I take from other cities ao from terrain landmarks:

For example: Frankfort - Frankton

                        Milwaukee - Militon Creek

Another name, I'm especially proud is the name of my CJ's capital: Bang Thep.

It should sound Thai, so I took the first part of Bangkok and the last name of Krung Thep (this is how the Thai call their capital). So I had Bang Thep.

With my last few cities I have based the name off of the physical region. My Texas city was Spanish and my New England city was European sounding.

I name unestablished cities with numbers like that when I want to shift large areas of land around/between regions 2.gif
