    I usually start OpenTTD and copy some wacky city names from there.

  3. Starting a realistic city

    I've returned to SC4 after a long break, and looking back at the saves I still have, most of those cities were grid-based. I want to start building my own realistic cities, but I'm struggling. My first attempt at a "historic" layout (i.e. suppose once this was a village and then it kept evolving and expanding) gave me an abomination which looked like a celtic-cross thing. You know, an X shape with a circle on top. I've tried building chaotic cities, following the terrain and avoiding straight lines as much as possible. Grids are boring (plop utilities and then plaster zones all over), the alternative building style requires certain creativity which I lack. This is kind of frustrating. Could someone post a couple of suggestions or links to realistic CJs?
  4. How to ruin a city with a water pump

    Oh man. I had something similar happen once when in an industrial city the water supply was shut down because of water pollution. Everybody just packed and moved out. Even after cleaning up the pollution, I was left with a city full of abandoned building shells and nearly half the population gone.
  5. I've decided I'm not going to use this region. There are loads of good generic mountaineous maps with water.
  6. I've downloaded a map from STEX, Vancouver Lower Mainland PRO (https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=5141). The description mentions no dependencies, and I went and tried to install the region. All was well, except only half the landmass appeared above water. The regional .ini is absolutely standard: [Regional Settings] Name = Vancouver Terrain type = 0 Water Min = 60 Water Max = 100 I can think of no altitude-altering mods that I might have. What should I do? Any ideas? PS compare the pic that comes up on the download page with what I have here.

I really like Opera, but it has a strange bug and won't let me post at Simtropolis. When I click on the submit button, nothing happens. Everything else works fine for me, though.quote> Oh, bugger.   8. INFO: Map Installation Instructions

    Hi, I haven't played SC4 for a _long_ while and reinstalled the game (RH 1.1)) yesterday. I downloaded some plugins and maps - the plugins work fine but the maps are weird. For example, yesterday I tried to render the map of Bergen. The rezult was bizarre: in god mode, I had to lower each city by 18 (!) clicks. There was no mention of any required .dat on the map download page. Today, I downloaded the Helsinki map ( https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=5631 ) and tried to render it. When the computer finished its job, I could not recognize the old place! I attached a screenshot in case someone wants to have a good laugh. I do not use any dodgy mods except perhaps the Middle European Climate mod. Other than that, I'm lost. Any ideas? Thanks UPD: I found what caused this and decided to explain just in case someone gets the same problem. As I thought, the MEC mod was the culprit. Quoting from the readme: Per grey tone (there are 256) you get 12,5m of height instead of 3m without the mod. Basically, the mod includes some sort of height converter. So there.
