I too give an enthusiastic :thumb: for the 'central park -st george' as its an interesting subject... I hope that efforts to polish it up work out good; then to see it on the stex soon...

server issues due to WI blizzard of 18" worth of snow and blowing and cold... hope this makes it

Aaron - I hope i finish it too, ive a place reserved in my new city

Gutterclub - They should be on my old PC ill try to transfer some of them over if i can find them

T Wrecks - i just went back and had a look at the first time i tried that building, the model wasn't actually that bad, the textures were gash though, the tower itself is fairly accurate minus a few details i still have to add, The base of the tower is only based on the real thing cause the only pics i could find of it were from a helicopter and didnt show much detail and its to expensive to fly to perth just to get pics :golly:

    Some textures

    cp2c.jpg

i still need to add some details such as roof stuff, i also want to ad some details to the base (retail billboards and such) and redo the base textures

great work Scotty! i tried and failed at batting this one so im very envious of your great work! heheh

and i might be able to help you out with the base.

the St Georges terrace (the street was not named after the tower, the tower came later) or south side of the complex had renovation work carried out a few years back.

the renos introduced pale green copper in a somewhat abstract fashion along the eave structure linking the street to the tower.

drops us a pmses if you need more info

    best. ,dave.

Looking pretty good, but I just can't help but feel it needs *something*. Perhaps raise the reflectivity of the glass on the tower ever so slightly? It's *this* close to looking like a real stunner.

So you are planning to keep the base? Does it cover the entire lot? I'm asking because a mixture of BATted ground and Lot Editor work typically looks stupid. That's why it's usually recommendable to have the ground extend over the entire lot footprint or leave it out altogether.

I'm eager to see what the roof surfaces will look like once you're done, because this is precisely where I see the biggest room for improvement.

    Looking much better already...

The only thing I can suggest is that the building become more white, as most things in Perth are white!! (eg. Here.) But this is a trick subject as the building can look silver as well eg. 1, eg. 2, eg. 3

As for the roof, have a look at this picture, This just show what is on the antenna of the building.

As for the base, either bring the glass ceiling to the bottom of the floors, as this is more like real life, you could always nearmap the building or ask for some pics ( I couldn't find many of the base, and garden area, even though it was a brief look :P)

Oops! Roger51's screenshots tell me that you apparently have missed some geometry. That protruding, windowless part that runs down two sides of the main tower is absent from your recreation so far.

Thanks for all the input guys its really helpful

Dave - thanks for the tip, i took a look on google streetview (an awesome tool that i completely forgot existed) and i think i found the bit you mention

Cammo2003 - you may have a point there, im gonna tweak the glass a bit but i need to get anew texture for my ground plane (the one i have at the moment is a bit blurry

T Wrecks - The base currently covers almost all of a 6x4 lot (although i plan to completely redo it now) i cant remember why i put that ground there but its its gonna be there in the final render, the roofs gonna be interesting and thanks to a picture roger posted i should be able to make it accurately

Roger - interesting that you suggest it should be brighter, i was thinking it could be darker  but after looking at the eg.2 pic i think its quite good the way it is (although the windows chould be darker. Regarding the base i orignally had the windows where you suggested them but they looked weird for some reason, but when i redo the base more like the real tower they should fit better

Now i haven't made any progress but have done a bit of reserach (and some help from some of you) and have decided im gonna completely redo the base of the tower

This is the building from the south (we'll call this pic 1) i think this is the bit Dave described

    basejm.jpg

This the north face (well call this pic 2) this is the face my original base was based off,but my original pic was way farther away so i should be able to include more details

    base2.jpg

Now here are a couple of problems

    95475644.jpg

The first problem is the building outlined in red, it intrudes into what would be the lot of the building im not gonna model it but it would leave a section that should be W2W in the middle of the lot, i have a couple of ideas to rectify this such as curving the entrance way shown in pic 1 around to the glass overhang so that it doesn't look incomplete

The Second is that i have no idea what the entrance to the building from the park looks like (the yellow arrow) and need pics or a description badly and have looked everywhere, if anyone can help it would be appreciated, ill probable ask around the WA forum on SSC as well.

sorry if none of this made sense :boggle:, it made more sense in my head :whatevs:

EDIT - missed your post t wrecks sorry, the part you mention is only on one side of the tower (see image above), it is on my model i just haven't shown an angle with that bit yet, my bad

Mate, it looks mint..you've always taken a few liberties with bases and it normally works.

My only advice is to bump up the reflectivity if you can, a building on this angle with the games angle might be pretty "pow"

As I mentioned before about prev models, as much as I'd like to see Aucks PWC (strangely one of my fave towers EVER) I think your Chch PWC would be a fitting tribute despite the fact it's still standing....

Gutterclub - i bumped the reflectivity up a bit thanks for the tip, the Auckland PWHC is one of my fave towers too, ill probably try and finish it after this one (I dont want to do multiple projects at one or none will get finshed) unfortunately the Chch PWHC is on My old old PC and i probably cant get it back

Roger51 - yeah i decided not too do it and mixed the pics i had with something originalish, a megalot would be interesting and had crossed my mind (for just a second) it would look weird cause the AMP building and Central park are both using different light rigs

I modeled a new base and did some of textures (i still need to do the silver bit)

I still need to do the details under the glass overhang, theyre going to have to be pretty detailed considering the nightlights will probably show whats under there

    cp4gr.jpg

Edit - Does the Curved Bit at the end of the entrance look strange to you, i just had a good look at it and it seems a out of place on a building with almost no curves in the design

making good progress on the tower :thumb:... as for the 'round' end fitting in, I'd say no... so then, squared off or oblique type angle end :meh:

No, my bad. I should have known that you wouldn't negclect such a prominent feature.

Anyway, I really like what you did with the base so far. This configuration translates well into SimCity, and anyone who wishes to have a larger plaza in front of the building can use the plop dll to plop the building with the main entrance facing to the side, and then they can go wild with plazas or whatever they want.

Btw, are we seeing a SimCity zoom level on your screenshot, or is it somewhere between zooms 4 and 5? I'm asking because in the past your buildings always tended towards the smaller end of the scale spectrum, which is particularly notable on the ground floor, where those ridiculously tall Sims make the building look underscaled... As much as I loved your previous creations, I always felt that the could benefit from a slight nudge along the Z axis, and maybe a slightly exaggerated ground floor height to compensate for the scale inconsistencies of the game. It might be a good idea to check these aspects in a comparison shot with some similarly styled Maxis skyscrapers.

Other than that, everything is looking splendid so far. The curved bit at the entrance is a somewhat odd feature, but if the real building looks like this... why not?

I would have it square, rather than round, and then at least it can fit in with a W2W development.

Are you doing the base \ walk-through area accurate? ( I think you may have answered this already) I don't really care if you are, I don't like it in real life anyways :P I was just wondering. Probably would look better in-game if you didn't, as doing the garden and everything would make it a large lot!

For the rest it is looking good :D

This is coming along very nicely, I love the shape of this building. As for the curved part I think it looks fine personally, makes the street level look a bit more inviting.

    very nice!

if you need better resolution top views, try googling 'skyview wa' then clicking order now which will bring you into the map browser, which in itself is much like google maps. in the program, you have to zoom in all the way as say at 1:2 scale the image will be jagged (which i think is to stop folks print screening) (of course you don't actually have to order the map hehe)

    hope this helps

Roger - i dont know what you mean by walk through area9.gif so i guess that answers that

Twrecks - it was somwhere between 3 and 4, i probably should make sure the screenshots are to a proper zoom level

gutterclub - yeah i saw that when i was in town the other day i should of taken some pics

    ilikehotdogssalot-thanks good to be back44.gif

It might be a quickie for you, but it could be a sticky for us - these are just the bread-and-butter buildings that any city needs! They could be the peak of the skyline in a less important town, or the fill material in a large city. Personally, I like such buildings at least as much as the shiny landmark skyscrapers. It reminds me a bit of that brown, boxy 2x2 highrise in SC3000 - mabye not so much concerning its look, but rather concerning its role and function. One bunny of anticipation! :bunny:

I'm with T wrecks, I love buildings like that! We have so many flashy skyscrapers as it is. the more "normal" stuff we have, the better we can fill in the areas around the fancy stuff.

One Ducky for a job well done! :ducky:

Absolutely. Each time I see another ZOMG uber wonderful skyscraper upload (or anything with "Burj Dubai" in it for that matter), I just sigh, thinking there's so much more stuff that hasn't been done yet for SC4...

I'm also with Twrecks and company, the more generic buildings we get the better. The skyscrapper field is quite extensive so some more bland stuff would be welcome. Your "quickie" will make a great addition to the game. As for the St. George, I really preferred your earlier base. More compact and better proportions. Recreation or not, I would love to have the option to pick between the two :)

hey scotty, i feel like im hijacking your thread with all these links to aerial images ect,

but this i think is so much more useful! google "nearmaps" the database covers au capital cities, images are updated very often, and multi-view gives NESW views OMG! its just like sc4

and I'm loving the westpac tower

    kind regards
