    Regarding the new avatar...

I was planning to make one myself, but I am not the best at making stuff from scratch. So, I ended up lifting this off of the Virginia Tech website, www.vt.edu. I will use this one for a little while, then return back to my regular one. I wanted to offer a little tribute to the victims of this week's violence. I also wore my Hokie Nation colors today. I don't have any personal connection to the university. But, as someone who is in school every day and as someone from southern Appalachia, this event has elements with which I can very easily identify.

Although I am a Tennessean, I am an ancestral Virginian. My family has lived in the area not far from Virginia Tech for centuries. The Southwest Virginia area is very much like where I grew up in East Tennessee. If you were to pluck out the university from Blacksburg, the town would be very much like my own. When I see the pictures, it reminds me very much of home. To some, especially those who move around a lot, home is wherever you happen to live at the time; nothing special. But, the verdant green hills of Appalachia have special significance to those who have lived there for a long time. The land itself beckons when you are gone, calling you back. Where I am now is a great place and I enjoy it very much, but it is not - and will never be - home. It gives me some idea of what the salmon must feel- compelled to return to where they were born. Maybe it's something in the water - but there's a special connection with the land. It makes me happy just to be near it. So, when I see these pictures of what happened, it feels very much like as if it happened at home.

As I thought to myself coming home that day, contemplating the years of sacrifice and patience and support and love the families of those students provided and the capricious nature with which these connections were broken, I looked out at a fiery sunset, as if the sun was red with anger for having presided over a day filed with such sadness. As darkness fell, the right grew cold. The coldness continued into the gray morning. The sun did not show its face that day or the next. Then, as night fell once again, the rain began, softly falling like tears onto a strangely quiet ground. The land is filled with sorrow. I can feel it.

There are a lot of bad things that happen in the world every day. Wars, disease, and many other things take the lives of people on a regular basis. Any time, anywhere lives are destroyed out of malice it is a tragedy. Every victim leaves behind grieving family and friends. Every victim is robbed of dreams and life. Every victim deserves better. I would hope that the legacy of this incident would not be a media frenzy or shrill arguments about who did or should do what. I would hope that the legacy of this would be that people everywhere will be reminded of the precious and fragile nature of life. A legacy of dignity and kindness is a fitting tribute for the victims of this and all other tragedies. Tomorrow, the sun will rise over a still-cold land. It will give light and hope to those in need of both.

I hear you, man...I hear you. Well spoken. I am not from the area, but as a college student, I can't help but put myself in their shoes. What if it happened at my school? What if one of the victims was someone I knew? As it was, 8 buildings at my university were shut down because of a bomb threat yesterday. But also reading the paper, I see 183 dead from car bombs in Baghdad on the same day. You're right, the world is pretty crazy right now. My facebook picture is similar to yours, and I think I may change my avatar here temporarily along with you.

That's what we're here for....people like you and me. Topics like the SHT Show and Schulmania are here to make people feel better about this place we live in.

    You're a good man, Schulman...

football_fever Thanks for commenting. I think it would be nice to have some recognition for this and other tragedies that happen. One thing I like about Star Trek is its optimistic vision of the future - that one day people will get past the violence and issues to become peaceful and seek to increase knowledge instead of power.

Pipishere Thanks! I am glad you like St. George. It has been a fun town to build.

    Hester Thanks!

sc4portugal Thanks for coming by and commenting.

Uumke Thanks for coming by! I am glad that you enjoy Devonshire and Lake George. We've still got plenty of lake area left to develop before we see what else is out there!

Jacqulina Thanks for coming by. You are always so thoughtful.

Homeandaway Thanks for coming by. Regards to you and Blackie!

So, how does everyone like St. George? This posh little village sees itself as the new "heart of great shopping"!

Hello! I have just seen that I lost lot 3 because my offer was shorter than the minimum. It was a failure of my mind. Sorry! I love St.George, well, I love every town, every village along Devonshire. Nice place at the moment!

And nice gesture with VT avatar. When I see in TV those typpe of things (violence and guns in schools) I remember when I was at my school 9 years ago and suddenly we had a bomb alert in my school. Thanks to fire department and policemen who evacuated me and my classmates we are alive, we were near to dead in a massive race to go as far as we could.

So I know what painful means in schools, so I am so sorry about VT disaster, and I give my condolences to all people.

I've already placed schulmonetas in a high interest saving account, ready for some serious shopping. I also hope you accept visa.......well ok maybe not.

Wonderful update, it's looks fabulous and looks like the perfect place to enjoy life at a relaxed pace. I also wish to give my support to the victims of Virginia Tech, as a university student I still feel deeply upset at the loss of those young students who had dreams and goals, and the teachers that tried so hard to protect them, such an awful waste of human life, and something which is truly precious in this world, very sad indeed.
