I don't want to be bad with you but please use real population numbers.

NYC metro area = 20 million

Tokyo metro area = 35 million

The 12 million for NYC and 16 million for Tokyo, if I am not wrong, it is the population of the most central 1500 km² but without this mention your message is wrong. 2.gif

Personally, I would think that Zuring or Frankfurt would be a good headquarters, as they are in a fairly central location of Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

on second thought...how about a nice space of undeveloped territory, place it in the hands of the UN (governance wise), its a Global DMZ, add some nice gleaming skyscrapers and complexes, and we're in business. I would say the capital of earth should at least have some space to grow, unlike currently founded cities.

NOT SYDNEY! If I were to pick one for the Pacific Region, I'd say my hometown of Melbourne, or Christchurch.

Of coarse Dubai! It has the tallest, building, and hotel, and everything is modern not like NYC. NYC is too crowded, full of crime, polluted, and ugly (no offense). But, I also vote for Toronto.

when  i said densest population, i didnt acutally mean, population density ( i know, its confusing) and of course new yoork would have a larger population density, its  compacted on one small island basically.

plus new york is outdated and infracutrely insecure, the traffic is horrible, and one earthquake could take those early 20th century buildings off of the map.

while tokyo constantly updates it buildings and infacture

If you could form San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Eugene, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C. all into one big city that would be absolutely awesome. These cities all have awesome City Planning and are pretty cool tourism destinations (besides Eugene, unless the Olympic Trials are happening). But thats not the question; If I had to choose out of those options up top, I would say Tokyo or NYC.

NYC!!!! NYC is already technically a world superpower city. If new york decides to change or do something to something like the word bank or the stock exchange, it can change the whole world! Basically, NYC has olmost complete control of the financial sector of the workd!

However, there are several points against NYC. One, it is very close to sea level. This is bad, as there have been recorded cases of cyclones reaching as far north as New York. Two, being one of the financial capitals of the world, there would be much greater danger to global stability were attacks to occur. Three, no offence intended to the many nice Americans, but it would tend to make rather a lot of Americans much more annoying.

I would personally recommend somewhere far inland, that has little financial power, and is not in the US. Alice Springs, Australia.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

ACEfanatic you got it!!! The most powerful City shouln't be the "World Capital" If we had to choose an existing city I'd have to go with The Hague or Toronto( GO CANADA!!!).

But I think it be wiser to build a new city instead in the most neutreal area there is.

OK, first of all, why Toronto. I know, its got a pretty CN tower and it is a nice city, but why? People are just sayin' GO TORONTO and such, but seriously, why?

Second of all, if the most densly populated city would become the capital, then Monoco wins with about 45,000 people per square mile.

Also, NYC has a lot of financial power, but it's already a HUGE target for terrorists. Look at 9/11. A whole chunk of Lower Manhatten was charred, collapsed, or just plain obliterated. It would only take down the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building (which could sustand a plane crash. In 1945)

My pick: Merge Milwaukee, Kenosha, Racine, and CHICAGO together to make the WORLD CAPITAL!

Chicago has financial power, has the swaying Sears Tower, and is a nice(ish) city.

When I read the post title I thought, immediately, New York City without question. Of all the cities I have been to it has always stood out as "the capital of the world" given its incredible combination of culture and diversity. However, ACEfanatic has an interesting point regarding neutrality. So I say, New York is the cultural, and maybe also the financial capital of the world. Politically speaking, however, Geneva might be the better choice.

In my opinion, the 19th century belonged to Paris or London. The 20th century undoubtedly belonged to New York City. However, the 21st century will see London as the world's capital. This is ,indeed, an opinion shared by a certain New York Magazine. London, the great crossroads of the world, is the most culturally significant city in the world. The city is also now the most prominent financial centre with more money trading hands here every day, than any other city on Earth. It also benefits from having, perhaps, the most historical ties out of any city on Earth. Being the seat of the most dominant power ever witnessed on Earth (the British Empire) and now the Commonwealth, London mantains strong ties with countries from all corners of the globe. Looking to the future, London is the most prominent city in what will be undoubtedly the world's most eminent superpower in the 21st century - the European Union. London is the world's capital city.

Istanbul, Turkey. It's right in the middle of all of the world's major population centers; over 80% of the world's population lives within 6,000 miles if it. It has been considered a gateway city linking the Middle East, Asia, and the Western World ever since it was still the capital of the Byzantine Empire, and still reflects all sorts of cultural and religious influences. It's also a well-developed city, and by the time Earth's nations can cooperate to a level where a single capital city is established, it will have modernized substantially. And with a current population approaching 13 million, it's definitely considered a world-class city.

Even though Jerusalem isn't on the list, I think it would make a good capital because it is Prevalent to Christian, Islamic, and Jewish faiths.

Also it is in between Asia, Africa, and Europe.

New York City has to be and it advertises it in brochures for the Empire State Building.

I nominate Kolvereid. Just for the sake of it.

On a more serious note, though, I guess Jerusalem could be a candidate... if it hadn't been for all the wars the very existence of that city has triggered. That city is too turbulent to be a capital of anything.

Calcutta/Kolkata, India could be another one. While not very special, perhaps, it's indeed central.

Istanbul, Turkey is my prime candidate. Although the list will be a little longer, this is the one I'm going for. It is perhaps the most central city on Earth. Read Mazzman's post.

New York would be the most listworthy city in the US. While it indeed is interesting, it's not a historical city (yet), and has only been in control of one country (while having city status). It's modern, the Big Apple and all that, but its historical significance hardly exceeds western modern culture. Though it's not far down my list, but I feel there are better candidates.

South America gets no mention. Mexico City could get one, for being central in its region, but then again, there are vast oceans on both sides separating it from the rest of the world. It's an American city, Western culture, not a global one. Don't be angry, though, almost all of Africa is in the same boat...

...except for Cairo, Egypt. Central, historical... a city lying between two continents. Too bad Istanbul, Dubai and Jerusalem outclasses it by being in the middle of three.

London and Paris are also peripheral. Yes, they are big European cities with lots of history, famous landmarks and all that jazz, but really, they both lie really far away from "the rest of the world". They are too Western. In that sense, Moscov would actually be a better candidate. Though, major plus points for being cultural and historical, though.

Shanghai, Seoul and Tokyo find themselves in the same position as London and Paris. They lie "at the edge" of the continents. They are big regional centres, but not a gathering point for all of mankind. Anything in Oceania is also far out of the question.

So all in all, Middle East it is. A crossing point between Western, African and Asian culture. I'll take a closer look at the region:

- Jerusalem, Israel - see above.

- Baghdad, Iraq - if it had been a "modern" city, it would have been a prime candidate. Too bad dictatorship and later an invasion has pulled it back.

- Kabul, Afghanistan - See Baghdad

- Tehran, Iran - too isolated and "exclusive". Pro-Asian, anti-everything else. Also, per Baghdad.

- Doha, Qatar - high up on the list.

- Kuwait, Kuwait - per Doha.

- Cairo, Egypt - see above

- Istanbul, Turkey - see above

- Tel Aviv, Israel - Jerusalem is everything Tel Aviv is, multiplied by a lot.

- Dubai, UAE - an interesting city indeed, being smack in the middle between three continents and their culture. But historically, it's significant, and loses to other cities in the region.
