Hey Dan,

Very nice progress, I love the park and I hope you can get that neighborhood in the bottom left to look as nice as the rest of that map.

Keep plugin away at it.

With my new satellite maps and printer I've been able to build some detailed areas. Or atleast get a good start on them. I had to slow down on Callingwood until my R$$ demand goes up. I think I need more jobs in the region before that demand goes up.

A look back at Edmonton in 2004

One of the most memorable things for Edmonton in 2004 was that The City of Edmonton turned 100 years old. Edmonton is a very proud city if you couldn't tell from the locals who visit this thread. We had alot to be proud of from our short history (compared to other regions of the world). In our 100th year the Edmonton region passed the 1 million mark for population aswell.
    /idealbb/files/edmonton2004_home.JPG

As anywhere else Edmonton had it's highs and lows. We had the number one weather news story for Canada this year when a super storm hit us on July 11th. We had over 15cm of rain in just an hour or two. The storm was said to be as rare as a One in 200yr occurance.  Many areas flooded including West Edmonton Mall which had over 30,000 people evacuated from it. The Storm also cancelled half of the World Cup of Triathalon which was being held on the same day.

In Politics Edmonton seen an election on every level. First seeing the Liberals hold onto there reign over Canada with a minority government. Edmonton represented a good portion of Conservatives.
Next we had the Civic Election which was the most surprising of any seeing Stephen Mandel (3rd in the polls all election) pass long term incumbent mayor Bill Smith when it counted most on election day to gain the mayors chair. Bill Smith was our mayor for 9 years and bruaght many large World events to Edmonton including teh World Track and Field Championships in 2001.
And the last election we had seen our (King) Ralph Klien hold onto his title of Premier of Alberta for another term. In my opinion the best polition I've seen localy in my life. He sticks to his word right or wrong often making good financal choices. Alberta is full of Oil but still he is the one that has taken Alberta to a GDP that can rival and pass most of the richest nations on earth. Alberta is now debt free and has one of the brightest futures on Earth.
Edmonton also lead all Canadian cities with 5.5% economic growth in 2004.

Edmonton hosted the 2 largest music awards in Canada in 2004, the Juno Awards and Canadian Country Music Awards. Both events went very well. Also Edmonton recieved news that it will host a new Cart/Champ Car race starting next year. The Edmonton Indy should proove to be a great event for many years to come.

On some low notes Edmonton started off 2004 with a cold snap in January seeing tempatures drop to -53C. In that week we had 3 devastating fires that effected different areas of Edmonton seeing people lose there home and jobs.
Edmonton also tied its record for murders with 28 this past year. Fears of a serial killer who drops off bodies just east of the city and some killing from small rival gangs accounted for most of the murders. 28 seems to be alot for Edmonton but for a city of 1million isn't bad compared to other areas of the world.
We also lost our Triple A baseball team, The Edmonton Trappers. Very succesfull while here, it prooved to much for commutes of an all american league so the last Canadian team in the PCL had to be relocated.
The Edmonton area and all of Canada's cattle industry had a long fight with the border closure due to one case of Mad Cow in 2003. Just this past week though we recieved good news for the upcoming spring. The border is due to re-open which should make a great impact for the region.

Some higher notes for Edmonton seen some needed expansion of its transportation network. Including Development of a ring road and expansion for the LRT heading south finally. Much of the expansion will be included in my recreation before it is finished.
Edmonton also recieved an AHL franchise. The Edmonton RoadRunners will be the Edmonton Oilers farm team. And with no NHL this year Edmonton is pulling in some of the best attendances in the league. I went to the opening game that seen 16,000 cheer to an overtime win. Speaking of hockey in 2004 I seen something that amazed me. Edmonton Oiler fans cheering for the Calgary Flames on there way to the Stanley Cup Finals. One fo the worst rivalries in sports was put aside due to being Albertan.
In Health and Education we had a very good year. Our education was ranked 2nd to Hong Kong and our regional health care (Capital City Health) best in Canada. The University of Alberta is also building an entire area commited to Nanotechnologies. Edmonton should help lead the world in this fast growing field.

These maps will help out alot. Nice Birthday present for me ;o) I should use these to work with in teh next week. I wish there was a bit more comercial in the area to help R$$ growth so residential growth may not be at pace with the rest of the area. With farm development west of Callingwood it should help me build all those houses. More to come. Thanks again Brett.

    Thank You 50,000 Views

Again its everyones attention and replies to this City Journal that keeps me going at a good pace often or spending that extra hour or two looking for detail.
With Bretts help with the maps I have built up the area south of Callingwood park and boosted the region up to 262,000 people. Areas are taking a bit longer to develope now that I have more ways to improve detail.
Thanks again and any request for the next update.

    Thanks Greyveil!

With Greyveil's recent help changing, rechanging, and rechanging the color values of some of the transportation map he was able to create this. He had enough patients with me to make my effort on Edmonton seem sloppy 11.gif. I found as Edmonton grew it was becoming very hard to see the smaller roads in the region. Losing alot of detail I have worked for a year and a half to create. With this all roads will be present in transportation views from now on in. I should have the map converted soon.
    Here is a sneak peak.

    Further Map Developement

Greyveil spent some extra time with me showing me how to use Ilive to alter the maps colors. With his great work and know how I was able to alter the map just a little more. The Streets are more defined so all region roads are visible despite the zone they are in. The Roads and oneways are a little more white to give them a different definition to show where they are. The avenues are a bit lighter even though its hard to tell. And last the Highways are a bright red so there actually visible in most any view. Here is another example with half the map changed.

Any opinions or comments on the changes?  11.gif

    /idealbb/files/Edmonton

I'll have more pictures of the region when its fully converted.

This is a look at the full region view with the altered Transportation colors.
If you look back in the Cj you can see how some areas are much more vissible. Its even more usefull when the region is in full mode. 11.gif

And the old one to compare....

I'll probably release the Transportation color mod onto the STEX in the next few days. It's very usefull in the region view in zoned areas where roads and streets become very hard to see.
Vigo : I think I'll expand the LRT south as of now I've built up that area as is so far. But I do have a few maps to expand it as is. After all I am building the Anthony Henday drive as a completed project which in reallity won't be done for some time.
It's nice to see some recent replies. The CJ has been slow of late lol. There are several areas coming together at once right now around the city so I should have some detailed pictures of areas soon. Instead of the same old Transportation maps.

Electroclash : lol any BAT ever started for Edmonton has failed. The Telus twice by Jbbry232 and Dudyconstructor. With both those pretty well finished just either never rendered or stopped at the last moment. West Edmonton Mall as I said before will never be done by anyone. It is to big and hard to make. Jim failing at that was no surprise. The CN Tower was the first BAT to be started for Edmonton and the first to fail. And the Embridge Building may still be in the works.
I have to give great credit to timotheus4 and greyveil for the efforts. timotheus4 making the water color for Edmonton. And greyveil making a few test mods for me and then showing me how to alter it on my own for the transportation map. These have been the 2 largest contributions to the City jounral as for helping with in game items.
Feepa, Brett131, and a few others have helped me greatly in researching areas and finding me very usefull links.
I've been really busy lately...sorry for no upclose updates......Should be some soon! 11.gif
