yes unfortunately there are massive extremes of new wealth and old poverty, which appear to be developing across the whole of China. In the rush for wealth, there are always those left behind.

Toxic Piano... well it isn't anything new in Hong Kong. This rush of wealth has been there for years. Today GDP per capita in HK is about 10%, or 3000 USD higher in PPP terms then that of UK. As of those run down areas, you see them in most countries. I guess places like Monaco and Luxemburg don't have any, but you can see rather awful looking places in London, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, NYC etc. one thing has to be added, Location and climate do make a lot of the difference. Old materials did have a lot of problems surviving in wet and hot places, so traditionally populace was rather reserved to that run done look. It changing now with new advances in material sciences, but will take longer for attitudes to adjust. So in a way many European cities look dirtier. But then again, when in Rome...

I would say it is a part of character and charm. Let locals decide them selves that to do with that, although it would be pity if everything will be all licked out like DT Singapore, which looks decidedly plastic and fake.

I have posted some pics for the second time, and hopefully this will work (sorry T wrecks, lesson is to always read instructions 49.gif.  Please let me know if this does not work. This is my first time uploading pics.

I traveled to HK from July 6-15, 2006. A lot of my pics are taken when you get off the Kowloon Station, Tung Chung (Orange) Line. Union Square is a project that includes the Sorrento, The Arch, and Harbourside. This group of buildings represents one of the largest development projects in HK. If someone, may be myself in the future, can do a panorama shot from the plaza located right in the middle of this project, it will be extremely fantastic. Enjoy the photos.

It is true that buildings in HK are getting taller and taller. When I lived in HK back in 1987, the tallest building was Jardine House, the HSBC building, and Exchange Square. Those buildings are not bery taller, and are miniscule by today's standards. When I went to HK last year, it was the first time in almost 20 years. I was stunned, shocked, and very surprised how much taller the new buildings are. Amal81 is right, even residential buildings are more than 50-55 storeys high. I was actually upset and disturbed that they built a series of 50+ residential towers only a few hundred metres from my grandfather's house. But, its life.
