I agree...I wouldn't mind knowing your technique for making the seats so fast (or do you just set in front of your computer for 12 hours cranking out the seats?)

TUTORIAL: How I make my seats

Since many people have asked... There could be better ways for this, but this is a method I've developed and it works well for me. I made this in 3dsmax but the same procedures should work with gmax too.

I made up the following measurements, but I think they provide a good starting point:

    The height of a seat: 1.000 m

    The width of a seat: 0.500 m

The horizontal distance between two rows of seats: 0.800 m

    Step 1:

Let's create a simple stand using these measurements. In this example we want to have 25 rows of seats, each row consisting of 15 seats. The rows in this example will rise at an angle of 22,5 degrees. So we begin by creating a box that is 7.500 meters wide, 0.000 meters thick and 1.000 meters tall. At this point I rotate the box a bit (Y:-9,0). This is what you should see now:

    pic010kp.jpg

    Step 2:

Make a copy of that box and place it 0.800 meters behind the first box. You need to figure out how much you need to raise the second row. This can be calculated with a basic trigonometric function:

    pic021lx.gif

Z is 0,331 so you raise the second row 0,331 meters. Put the snap on and copy those boxes until you have 27 rows. Here's what we have now:

    pic032ul.jpg

    Step 3:

Pick up the line drawing tool from the create/shapes/splines menu and put the snap on. Create a floor for the seats as shown on the picture below:

    pic042lx.jpg

    Step 4:

At this point you can delete the upper- and lowermost rows, leaving total of 25 rows. Using the same method you can create the stairs. I made them 1,250 meters wide, but just use whatever feels good for you. A pic showing the final result without and with textures:

    pic050pe.jpg

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I might also write something about curved sections (they are not nearly as hard as you may think) when I have time.

Oh yeah, the seat textures are attached to my fifth post on page 7.

I have to say that I love the Safeco Field you made, and I can't wait for the next one.

I have a request for a stadium though, the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium that's currently under construction. I can understand if you don't want to do it because just by looking at the pictures on the site it looks like it would be hard to do, but I would love to see it in SC 4.

Is Safeco ever going to come out on the actual STEX?

Probably not. The zip posted in this thread is over 10MB, so teemu would have to split it somehow (and that would involve splitting the .SC4Model file, which is over 13MB when unzipped).

BTW, lovely tutorial! If I ever make a stadium of some sort, I'll be sure to use it as a reference.

Great tutorial. However, I do have one suggestion use the array tool for those 27 rows. It is a whole lot faster. Thanks for the tutorial again.

perhaps, with special permission, you could upload just a picture to the stex with a link to make sure people know that safeco is out there.  It's fantastic work and the community doesn't seem to have any idea thats its completed.

This is cool, but it's a shame that I can never have it. Rapidshare is evil, it makes you become a premium member first, and Filefront, well...I haven't tried yet, but it's probably the same.15.gif

no... you don't need to be a premium member... they make you wait in a "virtual waiting room" which is crap cuz they're just trying to annoy you into getting a membership. but you should be able to do it w/o a membership, i've done if for free a bunch of times.

in anycase, go bears in the superbowl.

filefront worked very well for me. the only waiting was for the entire file to download (it's hugh but worth it)

Fantastic! What detail! Is it possible for a stadium to be rendered with and without people in the stands, then have set of models that change like seasonal trees? This stadium deserves to be filled! Not a request, just a thought. Way to go!
