New Burgundy faces new PM by Saturday

SAINT LAURENT- New Burgundy could have a new Prime Minister by the end of the week, if a non-confidence vote passes on Friday. The proposal was motioned by an opposition Member of Parliament yesterday, citing Jacques Torleau’s “inept management of foreign policy”. Mr. Torleau has faced harsh criticism in recent weeks for his support for the isolationist government in Pheonoia based in Paradise Valley, with the virtually total opposition of the members of the SCJU.

Mr. Torleau came to power in 1999 after Adolphe-Louis Vignon, sometimes referred to as the “New Burgundian Reagan”, stepped down in Torleau’s favour. Torleau was lauded for his economic polices that helped fortify the New Burgundian after the dot-com burst in 2000, preventing inflation and recession. He was one of the first leaders to support George W. Bush after the September 11th attacks, and contributed the third largest force into Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Unfortunately, the war became highly unpopular at home, and New Burgundy was forced to reduce the amount of soldiers in Iraq, although they still number third in total troops as of 2008 and administer the west of the country.

Torleau was instrumental in New Burgundy joining the SCJU, something that now looks to have become his downfall. If he is voted out, the president of the Senate, Edward Dontasse, will become acting prime minster, until elections (which can be held no later than September). Mr. Dontasse, according to government sources, is displeased with the PM’s stance on Pheonoia, and would probably back the Mount Fresca-based government led by exiled president Kevin Gabrieles. This would happen at a crucial time, as Duchess Chrsitina of Dominea is arriving on Saturday to try to gain New Burgundian support for the Mount Fresca-based government

General in Pheonoia consolidates countryside

General Félix Vavasseur, in charge of New Burgundian troops in Pheonoia, has moved to place the countryside and outer suburbs surrounding Paridise Valley under patrol and tight control of his men. He has recalled the remaining troops from the border. Some hypothise that this is a move to overthrow Diane Finstein and renstate the Senate, but General Vavasseur has remained mum.

Forces under the command of General Félix Vavasseur have taken control of PhAA near Paridise Valley, which has stood deserted since the start of the war.

Jeanne Madoré: We join you from the TNN offices in Saint Laurent, to bring you a special broadcast on the 2008 General Elections on 26th September Good evening, and welcome to the 2008 Election Centre, only on TNNone. This programme will aim to bring you up-to-date with all election updates and will air every Tuesday and Saturday at this time. We begin with a review of the major parties and their leaders, who may become New Burgundy's next prime minister.

 

Jeanne: First off with the current ruling party, the Conservatives. Their leader is George Klarion, Deputy PM since 2002 and considered to be Jaques Torleau's handpicked successor by many.Mr. Klarion brings with him a diverse and strong platform of economic recovery and Riverwood development, a traditional strong point. Despite his relevant focus on issues, Mr. Klarion faces having to convince New Burgundy to vote for his party after the National Assembly voted out PM Torleau. There is a strong demand for change in New Burgundy,and after seventeen years of Conservative rule, Mr. Klarion is going to have to persuade the people that he and the Conservatives can bring  that change.

Jeanne: Now, if there is a ruling party, there inherently is always an opposition party. In New Burgundy this oppostiion is manifested currently in the Liberals. Their leader, Marielle Larousse, is a seasoned political veteran who would bring experience to Devere House if the Liberals can gain a plurality of the votes. However, a large concern is if the Liberals can effectively run the country, or simply put, be more than an opposition, Ms. Larousse has outlined substantially and clearly her party's plan for the nation, but wether it will convince voters will only be known on election day.

Jeanne: Perhaps poised to be the biggest winner in these elections is the Centrist Party. Indeed, they may likely become the new opposition, or perhaps they even take control of the National Assembly, however that is unlikely in the opinion of many political analysts. What we don't show here, however, is their remarkable performance in local elections. The Centrist Party now holds 31% of the cumulative prefectural seats, 27% of provincial seats, and 26% of regional seats- all in all a substantial number for a multiparty democracy.

Jeanne: Also in this election is the Green Party and the far right Action Now party. Both seem to be poised to make large gains.We join Artur Bonnin in Saint Laurent. Artur?

The National Unionists started last year and have gained a remarkable four seats in by elections.The will likely join the club of major players in-
