I think it would be a good idea to start up a poll on if you see Melbourne or Sydney as the face of australia city of Australia. There has been alot of debate on this & I want to hear peoples oppinions. If anyone here has visited Australia, watch alot of aussie TV or docos or know alot about Australia, please reply & vote on the poll below.

Sydney. When you think of Aus, you think of Kangaroos, All that stuff..the Harbour bridge, and the Opera House.

I have to be honest lakeboy, I'd have to agree that it was Sydney. It is the biggest city here, with the most recognisable architecture, like the Opera house as DT mentioned. Most international flights come in and leave through Sydney too.

Although I'd have to say that Adelaide is the best city in Australia... hehe...9.gif

I'm curious to see what our resident Aussies say - seems like this is akin to asking What city is the face of the U.S. - New York or Los Angeles?

Sydney or Melbourne isn't what I see when I think of Australia. When I think of Australia, I see kangaroos, the outback and the Croc Hunter, G'day mate,  Foster's, and shrimps on barbies.

If I had to narrow it down, I'd say Sydney. It did have the Olympics 5 years ago.

I had a feeling you guys would think Sydney would be. But I don't think it dominates as much as it used to. Some people are now bypassing Sydney to go straight to Melbourne. Melbourne has so much to offer as well including the Australian Open (Tennis Grand Slam), the Forumla 1 Grand Prix, The Melbourne Cup (Famous horse race), The AFL (Australian Rules Football) Grand Final & many landmarks including the MCG, Rialto Towers, Flinders Street Station, West Gate Bridge, The Eureka Tower (when it's finished) and don't forget what is coming up in less than a year...

And also for the scenery, check out these couple of shots...

I've had the benefit of living in both Sydney and Melbourne, and it's really interesting to see you OS (overseas) guys naming Sydney as the more prominent city due to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, when in actual fact Melbourne by far is the more progressive city (architecturally speaking). Check out works by Nonda Kotsalitis or Kerstin Thompson. They seem to built for permanance in Melbourne, where parts of Sydney have suffered from a few whack em up and cut the corners type of architecture (ala Meriton).

But in terms of fun, weather an lifestyle, Sydney wins hands down (sorry southerners).25.gif

As an O/S participant, I went for Sydney. The PR for Sydney is simply better in the world.

Maybe Melbourne should be kept as a national secret and not allowed to become an icon of the country.

(It takes posts about my beloved home city to bring me out of the lurker woodwork - hello!)

I always have a small aww when overseas people always vote Sydney simply because its all people seem to know. Then when they visit, many are suprised to find they prefer Melbourne.

Lakeyboy, its great to see you giving props to Melb so much! Your CJ is very nice. Melbourne has it all - great weather, wonderful culture, active music scene, coffee to die for, parks galore, amazing architecture. I wouldn't live anywhere else.

Sydney might be the face of Aus, but those in the know, know Melbourne is its heart and soul 29.gif

According to rankings, Melbourne has beat out Sydney on several occasions as one of the most livable cities in the world. In fact it has tied with Vancouver twice as THE most liveable city in the world.  Supposedly Sydney has a higher crime rate too.  From what I've read, the only downside to living in Melbourne is the humidity... it gets HOTT!

But really... who can beat the Australian Open?
    MELBOURNE ALL THE WAY!

Wow, Melbourne has a pretty skyline and the same with Perth too. But I personal really love to visit the Gold Coast City, I seen the pics and man, it make Miami look like Mobile, AL (in my opinion)!!

In my opinion, Sydney is definitely the city that most people would think of as the face of Australia...it simply has a higher profile, has the historical weight to back it up (Because it is the site of the first permanent European settlement), has the landmarks (the opera house, harbour bridge) and of course its profile was helped enormously by the olympics. That being said, Melbourne does have a few things going for it, and could give Sydney a run for its money...If they tried a little harder LOL.

One hundred years ago of course, Melbourne was definitely the face of Australia though.

Brisbane is Queensland's largest city and Australia's third largest metro area. It is located in the subtropics enjoying an enviable climate of hot, bright summers and warm, mild winters that makes any time of year a good time to visit. A modern city dotted with parks and lying beneath clear blue skies makes Brisbane a refreshing change from most major capitals.

Brisbane's skyline is also rather different from other Australian cities, as it contains no especially tall buildings yet it has the densest central business district in Australia.

(pic didn't work right, I'll have to learn how to do that, you can view it by clicking the attachment below)

*brings 8 month old thread outta the boiler room* 9.gif

Heheh, as a Melbourne resident, and someone who went to Sydney for exactly one and a half days, I can say that...

Sydney kinda looks better, I'm afraid...45.gif But that's only because I went to the newer part of Sydney. I remember a lot of ugly looking streets and areas of Sydney. 3.gif The people there are also...*ahem* better looking (probably because of the sun 10.gif) and the city seems brighter (also probably because of the sun >.< ).

That said, Melbourne is the world's most liveable city (or is somewhere in the top 3) soo...

Nah, I won't vote just in case. 9.gif

When I did start this thread, what is it now, 8 months ago, I should have changed the words so it said Which is your favourite Australian city instead of What is the face of Australia Because everyone already knows what the answer to that is! (Sydney!)

<Why we lost the livable city crown and how connex is crap and the new ticketing system and etc>
For the list of the worlds most livable cities, Melbourne and Vancouver were tied on first place for a while but this year when they did the 2005 survey, Melbourne slid down to number 2 while Vancover stayed on top at number one, all on it's own. 8.gif I read that it was because of the quality of Melbourne's Public Transport System. It's been getting worse since they sold the train and tram systems to Connex and Yarra Trams respectively. They now only have staff at about a third of all stations called 'premium' stations from first to last train. A handful more are 'Host' Stations which have staff at the station only during the monday - friday morning peak hour period. The rest of the stations on the network have no staff at the station ever. They also took tram conductors off every tram. This increases the fare evasion, something they hope to stop with the new ticketing system being set up in a couple of years where you can buy a public transport top-up card. You put money on the card at a ticket window at a train station, a newsagency or a milk bar and you swipe it when you begin your journey and then swipe it again when you are finished with your journey. The system then automatically calculates the cheapest fare depending on how often you use the card and where. Abit complicated at first. I personally prefer the current metcards they have got in place already but I think they should make weekly tickets out of stronger cardboard. It wasn't validating mine at the end of the week when I brought one and they cost $25 for a consession to buy!
</Why we lost the livable city crown and how connex is crap and the new ticketing system and etc>

I still strongly believe that Melbourne is becoming more prominent on the global map. People when they think of Australia, they might think of Harbour Bridge, Opera House, Gold Coast, Steve Irwin (Croc Hunter) but they are also starting to think MCG, Flinders Street Station, Eureka Tower, Federation Square and others.

And take this on board as well:

    Sydney: 1 Olympic Games
Melbourne: 1 Olympic Games AND 1 Commonwealth Games (Can't wait. Still should be good even though the US aren't a commonwealth. Maybe they should consider becoming a commonwealth country.)

    Absolutely. Well-said.

Also, to answer Oakeshield's question: I'd say that New York, NY is the essential United States mascot city.

Chicago, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles also come readily to mind.

I mean, not that anyone really cares after over eight months, but yeah; I still wanted to answer. 3.gif

Being a local of Sydney, I say it wins hands-down. Though, the crime is something to worry about. And also a little tidbit: Sydney actually has the highest proportion of its population using public transport in Australia.

Why does everyone hate Adelaide so much? WTF is wrong with Adelaide?

I'll say Sydney, because it's stereotypically Australian.

Sydney for sure! The city of coolness! It is much more bigger then Melbourne and I really like it's skyline. All the attractions are there, Hrabour Bridge, Opera House, Bondi Beach. Althought it's not as classy as Melbourne, it is still the face of Australia and it's financial capital too!

The question concerned which city was the face of Australia, not the most livable or prettiest, etc.  Sydney wins.  But it is interesting to read the comments from the Australians and it gives the rest of us insight in to things about the country we would never know otherwise.

I was in Sydney for 10 days back in 1969 but don't remember anything about it except how friendly the people were, especially the girls.  Oh, and how they like their beer and rugby.
