In your opinion, Melbourne or Sydney?

I must admit it... Sydney just looks cool. Melbourne's water was brown (at least in that picture). I wouldn't mind living there. Thanks for bringing back the thread.

Why does everyone hate Adelaide so much? WTF is wrong with Adelaide?
quote>

It's because nothing worth mentioning happens there... it's unofficially Australia's Most Boring Capital City.

Nine degrees of separation??

Sorry, must go with Sydney. I've always thought of Sydney as the face of Australia. Although, Melbourne is beautiful as well!

Bleh...evil Sydneysiders!!! We'll invade you one day; or we'll inebriate the lot of you with VB and drop you all off in Tasmania. 9.gif We'll get you somehow...3.gif

Sydney is what most people think of when they think 'Australia', probably because of all the sunlight there. Hopefully that'll change soon, what, with the advent of global warming, we'll soon bask (pun intended) in the glory of fame and retake our rightful position as 'The Face ofAustralia'.

Btw, I voted Melbourne as the poll is getting a little lopsided. 3.gif

Not another sydney vs. melbourne discussion!!! 4.gif

Mmmmm, I am a Melbournian but I do reckon Sydney is the city people think about first when "Australia" is mentioned.......sad that we ain't got any icons here like the opera house and the harbour bridge. Though the royal exhibition building in Melbourne is world heritage listed while neither the opera house nor the bridge is. Maybe the eureka tower will change all that?

I have been to both cities before, and by far it would have to be....Sydney

all of sydney is fabulous, not just the city.

Melbourne is good too, but in my opinion not as glorious as Sydney.

I'm not surprised! I'm totally on your side lakeyboy, Melbourne rocks! Yeah Sydney has the Bridge and the opera house, but Melbourne's the true Aaustralian place. I'm sorry to all you Sydney siders up north, but, Melbourne is the best. No comment. Aand here's an intreesting fact to all you funnymen: Not one relatively succesful comedian has come out of Sydney. Of course that came form underground sources, but im sure you'll find that this is true...

Go Melbourne!

Trams rule!

Ferries don't

Well I've been to both places, and they are very unique in their own way. BUT, yes Sydney does have all the famous landmarks....plus you can put the Blue Mountains outside of the city....now that would be cool.

ps. I preferred Darwin than any other city in Australia...

Though I live in Sydney, and I do love it, the harbour is only a small part of the city itself. I think that with a couple of major exceptions that our architecture is cheap, nasty and put up by greedy developers with absolutley no respect for the built environment. Sydney has lost so many of its great 19th century sandstone buildings and it is here that Melbourne picks up the award!!! It still has streets of grand buildings as seen in Collins and Spring Streets and a greater respect for heritage. I think that Melbourne (apart from Canberra) has the most adventurous and innovative architecture, grand parks and a human scale of design. It deserves its reputation as one of the worlds most livable cities......

Hey guys,

As I mentioned I went to Melbourne, and as Sydneysider this was definitely a new experience!

I actually agree with bearaxiom about the architecture. The two main things I did appreciate about Melbourne was the older buildings and the roads (so wide!!).

I took a few shots of the skyline which I will post up soon, unfortunately the day I went into the CBD I forgot my camera, so no close ups. =(

In response to the title of the thread, I still think Sydney, probably because of the landmarks and the Olympics publicized it more globally then the commonwealth games have for Melbourne. In response to someone above saying Melbourne had no landmarks, they do have the MCG, which is huge. I believe it was even in Sim City 3000? Perhaps that was a localized version? Not sure.

Back onto the city vs city, Melbourne has a lot more room for growth, it seems a lot more friendly to non-car transport (e.g. bike lanes, trams, buses, trains). Sydney is taking the wrong direction with a lot of things, tiny land lots, roads are built without consideration of the future, new highways/main roads/motorways are only dual carriage (like an avenue in sc4), while in Melbourne and even Brisbane (3 times smaller than Sydney!!) they build them with 4 lanes each direction. (as bearaxiom mentioned, greedy developers who just want cash now and not care about the repercussions). They take advantage of the fact Sydney was unplanned and just grew, so the original roads were never big (or straight!), so the excuse is why make the new ones bigger.

Each city definitely has its pro's and con's... If only they could learn from each other!

On another note, I'm going to be recreating Sydney as closely as possible in sc4 (using google earth to help). New pet project, look out for it. ^_^

Hmm!! This thread has been running a while. I visited Australia for a few months at the end of last year to watch 'The Ashes'.

Sydney is definately the face of Australia with its iconic structures and beaches but I liked it far less than Melbourne or Adelaide. The Mass Transit is awful (very important to a visitor), hanging about in traffic on buses mostly; the ferries are cool though, I enjoyed commuting to the suburbs by ferry. And too many sex shops and prostitutes. The number of times I was asked ..... well, you know..... I also thought that the Opera House was quite ugly. It's a very photogenic building but I did find it ugly.

Melbourne was superb (although it was bloody cold!). The trams and trains were efficient. There was a feeling of space (not all cramped up and enclosing like Sydney), wide streets with trams running down the centre and districts each with their own slightly different character (Collingwood, St Kilda, Fitzroy, Williamstown etc) separated by immaculate parks and gardens.

Adelaide reminded me of England and was very pleasant but I have to agree with an earlier post in this thread, we did kind of run out of ideas to entertain ourselves after a while. The locals were none to sympathetic about the Test result either but I suppose I can't hold that against them, I didn't have much sympathy for them in 2005.

I would have to go for Melbourne, although i live in Melbourne, it still a great city to live in. There is great commute in the mornings, is the multi - cultural centre of Australia, has the best restaurant cusine in Australia, has a great skyline, is so clean to live in, and colourful.

But then Sydney is another great Australian city, we all love it the icon of Australia. Sydney opera house and the Sydney Harbour bridge and has a great skyline.

you couldn't visit Australia without going to visit these to marvelous cities. My opinion two great cities to live in.

I like Melbourne better, mainly because I live near there. Why do you think the Olympic Comittee would want to hold the Olympic Games in Melbourne first above Sydney? Because it is a great place! Melbourne's roads are so efficient, becuase of the grid system, where-as in Sydney all the roads are curvey and narrow, and there aren't alot of freeways leading towards the city centre. Melbourne's trains and trams all run on time aswell. But in Sydney, it was reported that they have the worst public trasport system in any major city in the world!

Sydney has most of the world renown landmarks, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. But Melbourne also has some great landmarks, the MCG and the Royal Exhibition Buildings.

ajay...
