Quoting from the Installation Instructions that are around here some place . . .

1. Create a new folder in your My Documents\Sim City 4\Regions and name it after the region you wish to download and install; e.g. \Seattle.

2. Download the associated .jpeg file by clicking the icon provided. Save this in the new folder.

3. If there is a .bmp configuration file for your new region, download and save it to your new folder and rename it config.bmp.

4. Start Sim City 4.

5. On the Region Screen, click the Open Region icon. Select your new region folder. The screen will change to a large flat area - this is normal.

6. Hold Shift+Alt+Ctrl+R and navigate to the jpeg file you just saved. Select this and hit okay

7. Sim City 4 now converts this .jpeg file to a new region; it takes approximately 5 to 15 minutes depending on the size of the region and the speed of your computer.

8. You're done! Don't forget to add trees and wildlife to suit your preferences.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I've downloaded a few maps from this site and when I started simcity4 they wouldn't show. Just a blank ground. I searched the forums, followed what people wrote on how to fix the problem and did it. But they still won't work. What else could be causing them to not work?

Are you sure you're doing it right? You must be in the region view, with nothing happening when you hit those keys, one by one, holding each down.

if nothing happens when you hold the keys down, then you have a defective keyboard, on the other hand if a selection box comes up and you select the map jpg, then nothing happens, then more than likely the jpg does not meet specs, (not 8bit greyscale, ect) in the last link in my sig these is a link to a program called Landscape Designer, this program will allow you to load a map and resize it, resave it in proper format, ect al, its a good program for double checking jpgs with you can also use it to create custom config files.

hope this helps...

no websurfing, i make sure all background tasks are off except taskmanager and explorer. My specs are this, Dell dimension 4600 with a 2.8g p4 processor 512 ram and a 120 g hard drive. Game play is a little slow, but bearable. I've loaded other maps and the game has never crashed on me, but lately i just started to try to make all large cities in my maps. I do everything i'm supposed to do, but like i said, halfway, the game grashes...thank you for your interest

Could it be that im using a cordless keyboard be the reason why it isnt working? Seems highly unlikey that that is the problem though.

I follow the instructions properly, but get an error stating, Region Bitmap size is incorrect.  1537 x 1793, should be 1025 x 1025  And it won't create the region.  What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do?  Thanks.

you will need a custom config.bmp, you can create one by using Landscape Designer, you can get it from the last link in my sig.

hope this helps...

I know its probably a little late to post on this topic, but I don't think this problem has been FULLY answered. I have the same problem with installing map regions, I left this problem alone for a while until I decided to try to figure out whats going on. I did everything SkiGeek wrote down but the map(s) wouldn't load or even show that they were there. Then I went to the link that greyveil listed but Landscape Designer DOESN'T work for Mac.

    Royal Jaguar:
Not sure what I can tell you about things on a MAC. I would suggest searching the forums for MAC related posts (and there are quite a few of them). There are a few ST4 longtimers who have MAC's or are at least fairly familiar with them who might be able to help but I can't remember who they are. If you look through the MAC related posts, I'm sure you'll stumble across these folks. Then you could PM them for help. They can probably point you to the specific thread you need to help with your problem. Good luck.

Believe in only what you can prove.

I have managed to upload the map regions, but they look liek a martian landscape. How do I get the water and tress that are supposed to be there? I tried using the God mode in the individual city maps but no water appeared. What am I doing wrong?

I was able to follow these very clear instructions, thank you.

My particular problem is that the loaded file produces an EXTREMELY high altitude (height) landscape of jagged mountains.

Any suggestions as to what has gone wrong?

    My thanks in advance.

P.S This is a really splendid website, has helped my enjoyment of Sim City 4 & Rush Hour immensely 1.gif

    Hello everyone,

I must be blind, or something because I hit Shift Ctrl Alt and R and it worked and all, but I cant find the file I need to load now heh. I followed the instructions but when I looked for the file I couldn't find it, in fact I couldn't find the folder My Documents from that little screen either, and I couldn't navigate it to find My Documents any where. Anyone have any ideas?

    I face a counter problem.

I imported the Indianapolis map (posted on the STEX) and all I got was water. Then I opened a city in God Mode. used the Raise Terrain Tool and... I was able to see the river. This rather suggests that the altitudes encoded in the .jpeg where either decreased or scaled-down by my installation.

Has anybody the same problem? Any idea how to solve this?

cogeo, from the readme of the indianapolis map:

    Instructions: (VERY important note below)

First, you must download this and put it in your plugins folder. When your region is finished, please remember to take the plugin out of your plugins folder so as not to interfere with other maps' rendering. Special thanks to Andy80586 for creating the mod.

did you follow these instructions to the letter? the mod mentioned does alter the elevation and is required to be installed to render the map correctly.

    hope this helps...

I have a major problem in installing maps...

I have tried installing Gauntlet Island and Cloverra and both are giving me problems so I dont think it's a map problem...

Whenever the region finishes rendering, the water level of the region is not right...for Cloverra it looks the waters are too deep so I tried to raise the terrains, but I just can't get the same level as the thumbnail...

When I installed the Gauntlet Island, on the region view it looks perfect, but when I click and get into a specific city, the water level is wrong again...

I dont have any plugins, I just installed SC4 + latest update, no deluxe or Rush Hour

    Any ideas?
