About This File

Overview
This is a pack of 23 46 custom decals ("Details") for the SimCity 3000 Building Architect Tool.

Installation

  1. Download either file. Note that the contents of both archives are identical, with the only difference being the archive container format and compression method used. If in doubt, download the zip version.
  2. Extract the BACustom directory from the downloaded archive into SimCity 3000 Unlimited/Apps, merging it with the existing BACustom directory in that location.
  3. If you've installed a previous version of these decals, you'll be prompted to overwrite them. Do so.
  4. The next time you launch the Building Architect Tool, you will find them under the "Custom" category in the Details section.

Usage
The main intended use for these decals is to give the illusion of ambient occlusion, something that the BAT is not capable of when rendering.

Quote

To break it down as simply as possible, let us look at the term occlusion, which generally would mean (in graphics), the amount of something or some element concerning lighting in the scene.

Combine this into ambient occlusion, it illuminates all of the different assets within the level or scene based on other geometric assets, (i.e. character lighting being darker because the table in the scene is receiving more light within the scene).

Aspects of a level where you would not see light normally will appear darker than those aspects of a level in which light is touching.

I've attached two screenshots of a BAT project that should help demonstrate the effect these decals can have.
Known Issues, Errata

  • I strongly advise that you use these with custom Paints/textures rather than torture yourself by trying to use them in tandem with other "regular" Details.
  • I am unfamiliar with the exact details of the .plt format used by the BAT to specify the placement of details within the menu. Help with figuring this out would be appreciated!
  • I am open to requests and ideas for additional variants.

What's New 0.2.0   View Changelog

Released

  • Added numerous variants, doubling the number of details in doing so.
  • Fixed slight inconsistencies with several existing details.
  • Temporarily changed the .plt file's extension to .plt~ as to prevent the BAT from reading it. It turns out that the definitions I supplied within the file are so syntactically wrong that they would trigger an interesting bug in the BAT where the entries for these details in the menu would be duplicated each time the "Custom" section was accessed.

Downloads:

  • Fixed the .zip so that it doesn't contain a nested tarball.
  • Replaced the .tar.gz with a .7z.
  • Added a source .psd (Photoshop CS6).
