About This File

Greetings to my fellow SimCity 4 fans!

Today I bring you la Isla Nena, Bieké, or more formally known as Vieques! The largest of the outlying islands of Puerto Rico, Vieques is a tropical island paradise bathed by the gentle Caribbean Sea waves. The elongated island features rolling hills, numerous beaches and inlets, while its eastern and western ends feature the most rugged topography. To the east is Punta del Este, where jagged cliffs interrupt the dreamy beaches, while the west features Monte Pirata, a towering hill rising up to 301 meters above sea level.

Like its sibling island, Culebra, Vieques has a somber past as military practice grounds for the United States Navy, having suffered the same fate until 2003 after extremely massive protests forced an end to the carnage of ordnance on the eastern and western thirds of the island. These areas have since been turned into natural preserves, and for the most part are closed to the public due to the extreme dangers posed by the armament pollution in the landscape.

Credit goes to Wikipedia user NordNordWest for the locator map!

The download includes two sets of files:

  • The first, named "Vieques PR--custom config", consists of an area of 38.91 X 16.38 km, which corresponds to 38 X 16 small city districts. This one is configured to optimize the natural landscapes and seascapes around the island as they are enjoyed nowadays. This one is a SC4M file for easy rendering with SC4 Mapper or SC4 Terraformer.

  • The second, named "Vieques PR--simple config", consists of an hexagonal grid with alternating rows of large city districts and two medium city districts offshore towards the edges of the map area. This one is also a SC4M file for easy rendering with SC4 Mapper or SC4 Terraformer.

This time there is no grayscale map because I used a special trick to get more detail on the landscape while remaining constrained by the 250m grayscale import parameter. I rendered the  island 30m below sea level and raised it out of the depths. This also means that Monte Pirata is some 20something meters too short compared to the real thing!
