The fact is Catalonia has NEVER existed as an independent nation.
It formed part of the Kingdom of Aragón until the 15th century together with Aragón, Valencia, Balear Islands, Napoli and Sicilia.
The royal marriage between Isabel of Castilla and Fernando of Aragón in the 15th century, as they linked their kingdoms, gave birth to the actual kingdom of Spain.

How coincidental...I've just finished crash watching the soap opera "El cor de la ciutat," which is scripted almost entirely in Catalan and set in Barcelona deep in Catalunya. Catalan sounds so radically different from Spanish, I wonder how much they might be mutually unintelligible.
